Raven One Kindle Edition
"The very best in this genre I have ever read." -- AMAZON VINE VOICE
Raven One immerses the reader into the lives of the Raven squadron and protagonist Lieutenant Commander Jim Wilson aboard the fictional nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge on deployment to the Persian Gulf. The reader joins Wilson in the cockpit of a carrier-based F/A-18 Hornet…and in the ready rooms and bunkrooms of men and women who struggle with their fears and uncertainty in this new way of war - amid leadership challenges that test them further.
A "routine" Middle-East deployment takes a sudden and unexpected turn when Washington orders Valley Forge to respond to a crisis no one saw coming. The world watches – and holds its breath.
Kevin Miller’s unforgettable first novel is filled with flying action and adventure – and also examines the actions of imperfect humans as they follow their own agendas in a disciplined world of unrelenting pressure and danger.
PRAISE FOR RAVEN ONE
As authentic as it gets. Really amazing look at what it takes to be a fighter pilot in the Navy from an author who's been there and done that. PACO CHIERICI, author of "Lions of the Sky"
Naval aviation as it really is. Miller takes the reader into the ready room, into the skies over the Middle East, into the souls of the Hornet pilots in this compelling story. A great debut novel. ROBERT GANDT, author of "Bogeys and Bandits" and "The President's Pilot"
Wow! This is an I-can't-put-down aerial thriller. One of the very best combat flying books I have read. If you like the details of flying combat jets from carriers, this is as good as it gets. LOU DRENDEL, noted aviation author and artist.
Raven One is an up-to-date thriller centered on a U.S. Navy Hornet squadron onboard a carrier as a crisis erupts in the Persian Gulf. Well-rounded characters, a highly authentic description of day-to-day squadron life and even a plausible enemy "super-weapon." A great read from a first-time author. ROYAL AERONAUTICAL SOCIETY
Raven One is excellent at scale and manages to stay very tight. The squadron is the centerpiece of the story, and what matters is the ability to challenge the squadron, not the U.S. Navy as a whole. In this, Raven One succeeds beautifully, and its pacing doesn't hurt either. Of all the post-1991 thrillers I've read, Raven One is one of the best at managing the challenges of that time period well. This is no small feat. FULDAPOCALYPSE FICTION
Raven One is a superb, well-paced, well-written, and well-read work of art. Raven One and its sequels put Miller in the same category as other military fiction writers like Tom Clancy, P.T. Deutermann, and David Poyer. MICHAEL JUNGE, author of "Crimes of Command"
Kevin Miller’s first air-combat novel has grown on me. The plot develops slowly, introducing the antagonist and main conflict later than most stories, but it does so in exchange for crafting the most impressive presentation of characters I’ve seen in a military combat novel. This, of course, requires strong narrative, which the author delivers in spades. JOHN MONTEITH, author of the "Rogue" submarine series

About the author

Captain Kevin Miller, a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, is a former tactical naval aviator and has flown the A-7E Corsair II and FA-18 Hornet operationally. He commanded a carrier-based strike-fighter squadron in combat, and, during his career, logged over 1,000 carrier-arrested landings, made possible as he served alongside outstanding men and women as part of a winning team. Captain Miller lives and writes in Pensacola, Florida.
RAVEN ONE, released in June 2014, was his first novel. He published his sequel novel DECLARED HOSTILE in August, 2016. HIGH DESERT REFLECTIONS is a short story about his personal flying experiences in the Navy. FIGHT FIGHT, the third in his RAVEN ONE series, was published in August, 2018. In 2024, HIGH END, the fourth novel in his RAVEN ONE series, was an opening day bestseller and top genre new release.
"I enjoy reading history, and historical fiction from authors such as Michael and Jeff Sharra, Herman Wouk, and Edward L. Beach fascinate me. They write about human beings, flawed and unsure of themselves, under tremendous pressure and caught up in events they cannot control. With RAVEN ONE my goal is to bring the reader with me on a carrier deployment, to join me in the cockpit and be privy to ready room camaraderie, whispered conversations in staterooms, and the level of precision involved with all facets of carrier operations. DECLARED HOSTILE, FIGHT FIGHT and HIGH END take place in other parts of the world, with new antagonists and new leadership challenges. The public response to my novels has been overwhelming."
His long-awaited historical fiction novel about the Battle of Midway, THE SILVER WATERFALL: A Novel of the Battle of Midway, was released on June 4, 2020. It has earned five writing awards, among them the 2023 CIBA Hemingway Award for excellence in 20th Century Military Fiction.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 June 2025Fantastic book!Great combination of a fascinating plot and realistic description of what it feels like to fly a F/A 18 c from someone who actually flew the plane during real combat missions
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 July 2022You asked for a review. I'll keep it short.
Took a long time to get going - Chapters 1-19 for what was basically a night recovery operation - didn't have to take that long to describe, and it didn't really have any bearing on the main storyline?
Character backgrounds could be expanded upon
Little bit anti-climatic with the final dogfight - that could have been a bit longer with Weed getting involved??
Overall, I did like it and have bought 2 & 3
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2025I can’t remember what year I read this book first, but it must have been a while ago. Of course I remembered some of it but I quickly realised that most of it seemed new to me. Therefore I enjoyed it a second time.
And now there are others books in the series, books that I know I will read one after the other until they are gone. MORE sleep missed, MORE “Just ten more minutes of reading,” before I force myself to put the book down because there are only six hours left before the alarm goes off.
DAMN YOU, KEVIN MILLER!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 June 2022Good on the technical bits and presumably very true to life. Characters are a bit cardboard and in the Tom Clancy mould. Good for fans of carrier aviation but less so for someone looking for a general thriller.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2017This guy knows lots and lots about the subject and can impart that knowledge in a meaningful and exiting evolution of events that without realising becomes a story. The detail takes over, for me at least, as I tried to follow the scenario. It's impossible unless you are one of the very very few with the background to assess it all comprehensively. It's only as the book develops that you realise complete understanding isn't needed. I can't follow all the call signs and technical information but I can follow the excitement as it builds. What came out of this for me was a real appreciation of the people who do an impossible job in impossible circumstances with almost detached professional expertise. They are American but that's beside the point they are professionals and that distinction is what makes this a great book not simply another storey about mighty America saving the world again. Well written and well done the only annoying thing is the author is an outstanding achiever in his field and has now gone on to be an outstanding author is there anything he can't do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding novel of naval aviators and leadership
First of all, it's a fiction and no biography. But the content is absolutely realistic and contemporary. The book is written by an insider of naval aviation and - as I am convinced of - also of military leadership. Kevin Miller is a former naval aviator and you also must have sufficient knowledge of military aviation to fully understand the content. Therefore I would strongly recommend this book for readers with a deeper insight into the world of the military fighter tactics and maneuvering and not so for absolut beginners of this subject.
Kevin Miller tells the story of different naval aviators of a fighter attack squadron equipped with FA-18C Hornets on board the US carrier "Valley Forge" after the gulf war and in the arabian sea. They have to live through some exciting adventurous air fights with the Iranian forces. You can feel, how they maneuver in the three dimensions in the air against their adversaries / enemies. Besides fights in the air described in great detail (with the use of the special vocabulary of the fighter community, which makes it very realisitc and convincing), also the special requirements for leadership in the military community are included in a large extend. There are very different characters aboard the ship, who are in charge of the pilots and sailors and you can actually feel the athmosphere among them.
Absolutely recommendable, if you understand the tactics and are familiar with the military surroundings in some extend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great if you are a fan of naval aviation
I'm giving this book 5 stars because if you like naval aviation, it is just perfect. The author knows what he is writing about, to the point that all procedures, manouvers and ambience are described precisely.
The story is there just to support the action, like in any combat flick. The bad guys are bad, the good guys are good, rah rah rah. A few emotional moments just to add to the mix and a good conclusion.
BUT, if you are new or not that interested in naval aviation and thinks this is a written Top Gun, it's not. You actually need to be proficient in navy procedures, radio communication, even F18 systems to understand half the action.
I have been flying military Sims for years, even with retired hornet pilots so for me it was like aeroporn, but I suppose most readers won't like or understand that the first quarter of the book is just a very well described carrier trap...
So for aeronerds, this is 5 of 5 stars no doubt. For the uninitiated, maybe 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected pleasure
I enjoyed the realism of the story and the interesting insights into life on a carrier. Also the technicalities of operating as a pilot of advanced flying machines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed "Hosers" Book. Pick a couple of rainy days and enjoy the fight.
I enjoyed the book very much. It was interesting to see what the pilots actually did when they were flying their missions. I worked on three different carriers (in 1967 to 1971) and supported our aircraft as an AE so no access to officer country of course. (except when making it to "Vultures Row" to watch launch's and recoveries).
No doubt Capt. Miller draws from real life experience to write his novels. Maybe a lot. I remember a pilot in our squadron that was a complete ass while the other pilots were mostly great guys and exceedingly professional. All in all an enjoyable read for me. I'll read is other books.
