The Wishing House Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,415 ratings

Just one wish….

Behind an old dilapidated cottage in a peaceful Shropshire village, is an ancient wishing well. Surrounded by superstition and folklore dating back to the civil war, the well and the house have been left untouched by the locals. When a stranger to the village buys the house, the well is disturbed….

Present Day - Unexpected circumstances lead Milly Lyle to move to The Wishing House, a quintessential country cottage recently restored and renovated by her lover. With its chocolate box looks, quaint location and the pretty well outside, it seems the perfect place for a fresh start. Then she hears of the legend of the Wishing Well Witch and the noises, dreams and strange events begin.

1642 – the turn of the civil war. Constance Yorke, the troubled wife of the parish Clergyman, finds herself turning to the wishing well behind her house for answers to her prayers. Plagued with visions portending a country torn in two by a bloody war waged by the King, it seems that Constance may have dabbled with things that she shouldn’t. Growing more isolated from her distant husband and the other villagers, she is left with nothing but her wishing well and the curious white dog that keeps appearing. When Prince Rupert and his Cavaliers ride through Sleepers Brook after a skirmish at Powick Bridge, it seems that Constance Yorke’s visions are coming true and that perhaps, she really is falling foul of witchcraft.

As times collide, one woman’s quest for retribution becomes another’s peril in a chilling story of love, jealousy, betrayal and revenge.

From a very young age, I have always enjoyed writing. I like to describe being a fiction author as an addictive passion, rather than a hobby. Losing myself in my imagination and bringing those thoughts to life by putting pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, is one of my favourite ways to spend my free time.

History and the supernatural have always interested me and the two go hand in hand very well for writing fiction. That’s how I established the genre that I love to write about – historical time-slips.

I don’t claim to be an established Historian, just somebody with a lot of imagination who loves stories, legends and rumours steeped in history. I feel very privileged to have grown up in England. It is a country with such a rich and tangled web of history and ghosts, that almost everywhere I visit seems to have interesting little tales linked to famous figures or events of the past. As a fiction writer, when I stumble across these little gems, I can’t stop thinking about them, imagining what might have been and indulging in any material I can find that provides a few more clues.

The ‘unknown’ has also been a source of endless fascination for me. One day, I have no doubt that science will be able to robustly explain away supernatural events. Until that historical milestone is achieved though, indulging in the supernatural and the fear of not knowing what it is, will remain a great topic for fiction and one that I will always relish writing about.

I wrote and published my debut novel, ‘The Wishing House’ when on maternity leave. I was delighted when it achieved a Top 100 Bestseller status in its Kindle category in 2016. So, in early 2019, I published my second historical time-slip novel, 'A Shadow Beyond', a ghost story that runs parallel with the historic outbreak of plague in the Peak District.

Most recently, I have tried my hand at a supernatural thriller, 'Three', with a release date of 27th June 2019.

The time slips in this story were seamless as the characters on both sides were interwoven. Usually I can guess a story's ending, but this one evaded me.

The plot revolves around a centuries old ruined cottage in a small village, brought back to life as it is bought and renovated. The deep well through the gap in the hedge did not need this touch.

This author is new to me, but I will definitely read more of her books.

A very well constructed and intricate plot, based in present time and during the English Civil War, with a wide range of characters which the author manages very well, I never had to re-cap to remember who any of them were. I read it in 2 sessions and really wanted to know how the tensions would resolve. At times the prose gets a bit flowery, but I think that shows the author's enthusiasm for her characters. I'm sure she is a new talent to watch out for.

This is a real spine-tingler of a book! This excellent debut novel is split between the present day and the 1600's & events between both eras are linked by the presence of a wishing well at the bottom of a newly renovated house in Sleepers Brook. The seemingly innocuous well is anything but, and as the story develops the reader can see how several catastrophic events in the village (past and present) are tied to the well and it's history. The character's personalities are believable, I particularly enjoyed Constance and Justice's interactions as they evoked a lot of emotion in me whilst reading the book (I won't go into detail as I don't want to spoil anything!) and Milly's character is also enjoyable as you can empathise with her increasingly precarious situation. As the story line progresses it gets scarier and I'm not ashamed to admit I had a few goosebumps whilst reading it! I found it to be a proper page turner and I had to keep reading until the end. Thoroughly recommended... though you may want to leave all the lights on :)

I will admit that I am easily scared, but even so I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It kept me hooked, and I read it in a couple of sessions, not able to put it down! There are just enough twists to keep you guessing, with the right balance between ones you could predict, (and can feel smug that you did), and ones which you would never have seen coming and really enjoy being surprised by. The characters were believable and I cared about them and it manage to press all the right buttons without being cliched. Really well written.

I enjoyed the read- it had a nightmare/dream quality about it that was enhanced by the questions left unanswered, the sometimes lack of cohesion of the plot such as happens in a dream . On the other hand, the number of different elements in the story got a bit out of control to make the conclusions feel like something had gone a bit wrong in the continuity of the story. It seems, however that there may be a book 2 forthcoming tht may resolve these issues. It is difficult to explain what I mean with examples as I would not like to include or hint at any spoilers. There were some grammatical errors which were annoying, especially the number of incorrect homophones- 'elude' for 'allude' for example. Although it rambled a bit in places was never boring. The writer tried to include a lot of things, historical background and elements of old magick, and linking them into the plot sometimes got contorted. This is all perhaps unfairly picky- it was a very good read and I would certainly read Book 2 when and if it comes along.

I though this was a brilliant debut novel. The characters are well developed and I was really drawn into the historical element and Constance Yorke's story. I liked how the two parts of the book entwined and I think the author did this really well.
The only part I didn't like was the ending. To me it was a bit far fetched and I feel it could have been tied up less dramatically but that's just my opinion and I liked the rest so much I would definitely recommend this to people and look forward to the author's next book.

The author has excelled herself by creating such a gripping and terrifying read with her obviously very fertile imagination.
The ending was completely unexpected too, and one that I could never have predicted.
I have already have Emma - Nicole's next book ' Three' , and cannot wait to enjoy being scared again.

I am a keen reader of dual time novels and I am always happy with things somewhat paranormal....when done well. This is the second book by the author that I have read and both have been very enjoyable reads.

Well crafted characters built around a nugget of history, well developed dual plots...what more could a reader want! I now plan to read the last of her available books and I hope that she is working on another soon-to-be-published book because I want to read it!
