- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2017I liked this book. It was entertaining and exciting. It didn't get the 5 stars though.
Things I liked about it:
This kind of story appeals to me. It is exciting and it left many chapters on a cliffhanger which makes you want to read the next chapter.
The story itself is the kind of thing that although seemingly impossible, you can just imagine that governments - especially the american government - have some grotesque manufactured viruses that they waiting or maybe even itching to drop on some country of non white people.
The story was exciting. Even though you know that the main character was going to be ok in the end, some of the situations did leave you wanting to know how he was going to get out of that situation.
I was a fan of the films 28 days later and resident evil and this book looks like it was inspired by them both. The spread of disease - the arrogant governments thinking that if there were problems, they were smart enough to contain them.
I also liked the depiction of the diseased - I could imagine how grim they were.
Things I didn't like so much:
The swearing. I'm not anti swearing at all... I swear too much in person so that's not the problem... OK the Rhys swears - a lot.. and that's fine. That was his character. However, almost everyone else swore in the same way and pretty much as frequently - and not always at the appropriate times.
On top of that... there was loads of swearing in the narration which is totally unnecessary. Swearing in the speech - ok, swearing in the narration when the book is not in the 1st person... no.. out of place.
Some of the actions Rhys took... I won't put in any spoilers so I'll stick to saying the photograph collection incident.. Not believable. The author could have thought of a better way to trap Rhys on the island
Similarly, the ending... Not a chance in hell... - especially with Rhys being so unfit. The author could have written the second book based around Larissa and how dealt with escaping the building. what happened there would not happen in a million years... you can't even suspend disbelief at that point... it just makes you think... ok.. well in that case, if you die... I won't be upset.
Both Rhys and Vicky seemed to relax way too easily and enter into unnecessary conversation given the situation.
E.g. the sport shop incident with the trainers.. the personal questions, the 'getting to know you' bit... In that situation, I'd imagine people to be on extreme alert rather than curious about the other person. It kind of felt like Rhys wasn't taking the situation seriously enough.
The part at the very end with his son I can accept as part of the story - but maybe a couple more kids would have been more believable.
That sounds pretty negative but in the end, the book is actually enjoyable and flows well and has a subject matter that is interesting... so I'll be happy to read the second book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 April 2018** spoiler alert ** I enjoyed most of this book. I liked the setting, even if the main character’s motivational arc was a bit irritating. It was tense and exciting.
However, when the main character started to consider his attractiveness to the woman with him *whilst zombies are in pursuit* of course ending with them falling in love, (seriously, describing an attractive woman as the world crumbles around you is just ridiculous) it just started to get annoying. The ending where Rhys decides on the most idiotic plan I’ve literally ever heard, clearly as a way to extend the series without the mundanity of having a kid in tow, has spoiled the whole thing. Won’t read any further books.
I’ve given it three stars because I would read the first two thirds again.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 March 2025I absolutely loved this. Wasn't sure how it was going to progress initially but it soon fell into place. As an avid zombie fan (films series & books) this one fits in perfectl. Was gripped from the beginning & couldn't put it down so I'm moving onto part 2.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 January 2017In the not so far off future the second cold war has led to worldwide ban on arms, unbeknownst to the majority of inhabitants and workers of summit city, it’s top scientists are working on a way to wreak war without guns. Our protagonist Rhys, is a worker within Summit City, low down on the chain, he is tied to a desk next to his ex wife and spends his day working out how to get better access to his son, all that comes crumbling down when an explosion erupts from the area of the mysterious Alpha Tower, the experiments come crashing out into the square creating a deadly army of Infected from the first few out the door. Rhys now faces a race against time to escape Summit City and reach his son before the infected get there first.
This is one intense ride of a story, initially played out in 2 parts between Rhys and within the Alpha Tower until both stories come together. There are parts that will make you not want to turn the page for fear of what is coming next and other parts where your page turning is going as fast as your heart! It’s a mid length book which adds to the need for good pace (which it has) and the scenes are played out pretty much in real time. Rhys is a character that you want to root for, he has his flaws and there is a revelation that knocks his halo for a while but ultimately you have to love him, if only for the fact that he’s just as unfit as most of us would be when suddenly faced with constantly running from the infected hoard’s. It’s these little touches of realism that really ground the story and add to the intensity.
It does end on a cliffhanger of sorts, although that part of the story is done it’s no way near a neat little bow, I shall definitely be reading more of this series!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 April 2018I enjoyed the book, but I did feel at times I was reading an episode of 'The Walking Dead'. The plot moves along fast and that's also good, but I did feel like the two main players developed a relationship a bit too quick, especially given the circumstances. There were some interesting scenes which made me read on rather than putting the book down which is also good. I intended to buy book 2 but a free offer meant I could get it without paying so happy with that & am looking forward to seeing how the Book 1 cliff hanger plays out. Overall, a good read, fast paced so no long drawn out scenes that you are desperate to get past. On the downside, the 'zombie' treatment has been done so many times there is nothing really new, but on the upside, there is an interesting sub-plot with the two main characters & the relationship between Rhys and his ex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-stop action. Highly recommended. They should make a movie from this...
Gripping novel that will have you glued to your seat reading until the end. Author has an modern, easy to read style that will have me seeking other novels he has written. Highly recommended if you like non stop action, apocalyptic stories with real world characters.

1.0 out of 5 stars ugh.. what a horror to read
The worst horror of this book, is the writer telling everyone that quite some years in the future, nothing will change.. Rhys a stupid worker drone, drives each day in his car to work through traffic, battles for custody of his son, which is everything in his boring life.. blablabla
Then come the zombies, which help the loser break out of his miserable life, find a tough girl (which forever reasons helps him) and save his son.
All told in very basic and unimpressive style.
Avoid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this!
Fast paced and very descriptive. Characters are compelling - both positively and negatively. As a space opera junkie I am not normally a fan of zombie stuff, but based on reading Robertson's other works I thought I would give it a try. You will not be disappointed. A combination of scifi, horror and apocalyptic fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well thought out character reparability and novel setting allow the reader to immerse themselves into the story.
I have only read a few "zombie-esque" novels, such as World War Z and the Day By Day series. I am glad to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this one. For me, two of the most important reasons why I like this book, and the aforementioned, are the characters and the setting. A nice bonus is the balance of zombie style, less a shambling oaf, and not an intelligent killing machine.
First, the characters feel nautral in the sense that their actions seem practical and likely to what I, or people I know, might do. The backstory of the main character provides the relatability need to attach to him and view the apocalyptic world as if I were there myself. This attachment leads me to my second point, the novel setting.
As the immediate surroundings in the novel descend into chaos, the author does a good job of visualizing that chaos. While reading, I was able to imagine the depictions of carnage and gore of not just the outside. I could visualize the characters thoughts as they were thinking them. The mood of the novel is sometimes melancholy and dark, yet it maintains an underlying theme of resilience and hope.
The Alpha Plague is a good read and I am excited to continue reading through the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!
Absolutely loved this book, well written with a great level of suspense. Thought the way characters were developed was well paced also. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone. Only complaint I have is I nearly screamed at the end when I was left hanging but isn't that the point :) Looking forward to reading T.A.P 2 which I've just started on. Congrats Michael love The Alpha Plague
