4.5 out of 5 stars 1,958 ratings

Sometimes the life you want isn’t the one you need…

Freya has skirted through life, drifting from place to place and job to job. Always restless, it seems she’s finally found a place to settle down (with a sexy boyfriend to match) in a small and cosy town. But she still finds herself thinking of the rolling hills of her Cumbrian childhood home: Appleby Farm. They’re only dreams though… there’s a life right here ready to be lived.

But a phone call rocks the new life she has built. Tragedy has threatened Appleby Farm and Freya makes the choice to return home, leaving her lovely boyfriend and safe job behind. But maybe the grass at Appleby Farm will be a shade greener this time…

Now, ever-restless Freya must finally make a choice about what she’d like her life to be. With two lives, two men and two futures to choose from… who does she really want to be?

Appleby Farm is a charming, funny and romantic story for anyone looking for a feel-good, light-hearted read, from the bestselling author.

Hello and welcome to my Amazon page! Look out for my new novel SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW publishing in July 2025!

I write uplifting, heartwarming romance novels. My stories are about people I’d want to be friends with, characters my readers will root for. They are often ordinary women doing extraordinary things. I want my books to help readers find joy in everyday moments and to cherish life's unpredictability.

I've been a lover of stories since I was tiny and used to beg my mum to take me to the library because I’d finished all my books and was desperate for new ones. Many of my passions have come and gone (my obsession with home décor shows in the 90s led to a lot of dodgy DIY choices and my attempt at making wine did not end well!) but my love for story and drama and romance will last a lifetime.

My favourite thing to do is to get myself comfy with a book in my lap and my dog, Pearl beside me and lose myself in a story. I love the feel of a paperback, but am equally happy reading on my Kindle or iPad. I now listen to a lot of audiobooks too, especially when I’m driving. I read a wide variety of novels, but there is a special place on my bookshelf for Marian Keyes, Maeve Binchy, Beth O’Leary and Emily Henry. I didn’t start writing until 2013, before that I ran a PR and Marketing agency for many years and loved hearing my clients’ stories of how they started their businesses. Those stories must have stayed in my subconscious because I find I often write about the sort of places I used to work for.

I grew up in Birmingham but moved to Nottingham for university and have been here ever since. I live in a small village just outside the city, our house overlooks fields of barley in one direction and horses in the other, and our garden is full of fruit trees: damson; plum; pear and of course, Bramley apples!

Brilliant read.
A fantastic book from Cathy Bramley. I've read this before when it came out in 2015 and decided to re read it again, I'm glad I did as it was like picking it up for the first time to read.

I'm not a fan of serials as I get too impatient wanting to read the rest of the story immediately, but then have to wait weeks or sometimes months until the next episode is available, so even though I wanted to read Cathy Bramley's Appleby Farm I'm glad I did wait until the complete version of the book was published last week.

I hadn't twigged before I started reading that there was a connection with Cathy's previous book, in that Appleby Farm starts off in Kingsfield where Ivy Lane was set and that the main character in this novel Freya was the same Freya that was briefly introduced at the end of Ivy Lane, so it was a welcome surprise to be reacquainted with a few old friends briefly before the story moved on to tell her story.

From the moment Freya arrives in the Lake District you could feel that this is where her heart belonged and that she would do whatever it took to help save the farm for her auntie Sue and uncle Arthur who had practically raised her. But what does this mean for her relationship with boyfriend Charlie who's back in Kingsfield? Freya has to think of ways to bring the farm into the modern era by diversifying and make it pay its way to keep a roof over their heads, but is this a mission impossible?

You can't help but like Freya as a character, she has a heart of gold, is loyal to her family and friends, and she has such a resilient spirit about her that no problem was too big to overcome and nothing was going to beat her. And before long she's recruited help from a great cast of supporting characters, her uncle's farmhand Eddy, student Ross, childhood friend and neighbour Harry, her new friend Lizzie and last but definitely not least Sue and Arthur, But I have to admit that Lizzie was my personal favourite as she was such a fun lively person to be around but wasn't afraid to get stuck in when needed.

I've only been to the Lake District once as a child so have very fuzzy memories of the area but Cathy's stunning descriptions of the landscape and area really made me feel like it's a place I'd like to visit again, and this from someone who is a townie at heart. Although I can't honestly say I'd want to try a night in a Yurt, no matter how glamorous you make it, in the middle of the Cumbrian countryside!

Appleby Farm was everything I was anticipating and more, I loved every single page of it... even the ones when I was cursing under my breath at the devious actions of some. Another fabulous read from Cathy that draws you in. I'm definitely a fan of her writing having enjoyed all three of her novels to date so am already looking forward to reading the complete version of her current serial Wickham Hall which is being published in January... just in time for my birthday ;)

If only life was really like it is in Cathy Bramley's books ! They are the perfect antidote to the violence and unpleasantness that we read about in the news and see on the television. As a older, "traditional English" fan, I am not keen on some of the abbreviations used for ordinary words but that is nitpicking I suppose if most people use them these days. The descriptions of the Lake District were delightful, the characters loveable and unfailingly cheerful and inspiring. Cathy has an original style, modern and cozy at the same time.

I didn't know that I was supposed to read Ivy Lane first so I am reading it now. Worth checking the order to read the books before purchasing. the books were first published in 4 parts, it is worth taking a few minutes to clarify.

This is the second book I have read by this author and thoroughly my enjoyed. I chose it for my holiday reading list and read while I was in the Lake District. That made it all the more enjoyable. I really like how Cathy approaches her subjects, it's not all romance, sweetness and light. She covers some quite serious subjects and she does it really well. The main women characters are strong and independent. The descriptions of the places she writes about are descriptive and you can see them in your minds eye and almost imagine your there. I have also read The Lemon Tree Cafe and would say the same of that. I felt like I would like to visit the places, if only they were real. I have two more books of hers lined up to read. I know I'm in for treat. Cathy Bramley's books are warm, funny and at times heartbreaking, but always uplifting. I am now a big fan of her books.

Cathy's books are very easy to read and follow the stories. Nothing complicated so you have to keep going back to fathom who is who it doing what. That can be infuriating!

I was very glad I waited to read this until it was published as a complete book. I really, really don't short stories nor this new format of publishing ebooks in instalments - I read so many books I'd have forgotten some of what happened in a previous instalment. Do hope this is a development in ebook publishing that dies out as I realise it's also something that financially benefits author and publisher rather than the reader. Having said that, this book is fairly predictable and cliched, but the warmth and fun of the writing is what makes it enjoyable. Will wait for Wickham Hall to be published as an entire book.

I loved Ivy Lane - the first novel I had read by this author, but I read Ivy Lane in the four separate instalments and read it quickly. This time I bought the book as a whole, and think I should've bought in the instalments instead as I really struggled with it. I'm not saying the book isn't good, I think it probably is, but it hasn't grabbed me like Ivy Lane did. Maybe if I'd read part 1 first, I would've realised it wasn't a page turner for me and not gone any further. I struggled - over about 4 weeks (!) - to read half of this book feeling that I should read to the end, but having another book by another favourite author 'waiting in the wings' I decided in the end to abandon mission, although I did read the last chapter as I wanted to see how it ended! So I'm not saying this isn't a good book, just that it didn't grab me like other books have. Sorry Cathy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Vorhersehbar, künstlich konstuiert und langweilig
Reviewed in Germany on 26 June 2017
"Summer at Shell Cottage" von Lucy Diamond oder "Instructions for a Heatwave" von Maggie O'Farell empfohlen.
