- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2017As opposed to some of the earlier reviewers, I found the book to be well written, interesting, and hard to put down.
The plot is definitely unique, instead of horror, it dives deeper into human needs and feelings. The characters are not emotionless killing machines, and they definitely face a few moral problems along the story.
There are some parts in the book where the emphatic reader feels like he was just hit hard in the stomach ('We love you Lara.') Even if just for these, I think it's worth reading this book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 November 2016This is a well written novel - testified by much of it holding the reader's interest when the central character is entirely alone.
Those committed to traditional zombie novels will probably be unsettled by the innovation here, but for the rest of us, it's a good story told well.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 December 2021This is totally different to every other zombie book I've read (and I've read nearly 90 this year alone) but the characters are great, storylines are good and it's all compelling enough that I've already downloaded the next few books in the series, I need to know what happens, it's essential!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2017Not for me. Found it so hard to get into that I abandoned it after the first few pages. The Author undoubtedly has much talent but I simply couldn't emphasise with the main character and if I can't do that within the first few chapters I know it's never going to happen no matter how well the book is written. Apologies to the Author because I really wanted to like this one
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 August 2016Well this was a turn up for the books.
Different on so many levels.
All of them enjoyable.
I have no wish to spoil this excellent read for others by blabbing.
So if you like zombie apocalyptic stories with a twist or two or three, read this book.Well written and well worth the time.
If I had one complaint,it would be leave out the pets getting gruesome endings, those kind of things for whatever reason leave me cold and upset which make me feed my furry ones extra treats. While they love treats,I can live without this kind a trauma in my life.
Still this was one of the best books I have read in a long time and I will be buy the set.
GREAT job Mr Grist..Well done.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 July 2017I loved this book! I have read many zombie books lately and they are quite "samey" usual plots and stuff but this one turns that around. The characters are good and behave well, as you would. They are believable and you like them Amo (the main character) i loved. The twist and totally different way you end up understanding everything is brilliant and quite sad. I cant wait to read the next book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 August 2019Another day - another Zombie Apocalypse... ? Well, no, not quite. The end of civilisation as we know it, certainly - an almost immediate global catastrophe and there are some early deaths (planes falling out of the sky, that sort of thing) and the (many) survivors are shambling around... but they lack the usual craving for brains, as Amo ('My parents were hippies') eventually discovers.
A comicbook writer recovering from a series of comas, Amo wakes one morning to find his last medical symptoms have vanished - he is literally a new man. And alone, apart from several thousand mindless zombies... After a series of false starts he sets out on a road trip from New York, determined to find other survivors, leaving a series of cairns along his route, stocked with information and survival aids.
First of nine books this sets up the series well - the writing style is easy and the narrative flows smoothly.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2023Wasn't sure at first about this book but it turned into a page turner. Love Amo & Lara. Now into book 2

5.0 out of 5 stars A different twist!
A very different twist from the standard zombie novels. First, the main character, is a nobody. And you get to watch him grow and learn and shine. Secondly, the story is so different, from the other Z novels, that alone kept me reading. Good amount of action, great characters, and a development towards the ending of the book, that I never saw coming. If you like Zombies, you need to read this!

4.0 out of 5 stars A different take
An interesting take on the concept of zombie behavior and purpose in the world once turned, still enough chaos to keep the reader entertained early, before a unique twist whilst not going overboard on zombie killing and bloodshed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow
I am pretty sure I haven't read anything like this before. It held my interest so long I didn't want to put it down and ended up reading through the night to finish it. Looking forward to more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Gli zombie non corrono!
Per me è inaccettabile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great book.
This may be the best zombie genre book I have read. The writing is excellent, the story is well developed and unique, the characters have real depth.
Quick (mostly) spoiler-less synopsis:
A regular guy (hipster) meets a girl, and wakes the next morning to find that EVERYONE around him (and around the world) has become a zombie. He may be the one of last people left alive on the planet. Try to survive in New York City. Try to help any others who may have survived. Struggle with knowledge that is crippling in it's horrific realization [my description is kept cryptic on purpose]. Cross the country to help supply and assemble any who survive.
I found the characters (particularly the the main character to be incredibly well-thought out, and the author clearly took a ton of time in hashing out what this person would be thinking and feeling under his circumstances. The plot is unique, both in the origin of the zombie apocalypse, but also, as you'll see, the result and nature of the zombies.
I also love that this book has closure. It is not a cliff-hanger ending to get you to buy the next book. You can, to continue the story, but this story is complete in itself. This book was free when I got it, not sure if it will stay that way or not, but it's worth buying. I'll be buying the next book.
