The Puppet Master of Java Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

It begins with an argument between two backpackers and a taxi driver in Jakarta, Indonesia.

It ends in Bali on the night of one of the most infamous acts of terrorism in the 21st century.

More than a love story, more than an odyssey, THE PUPPET MASTER OF JAVA is an epic: a novel that captures a time and place that changed the world forever.

Travellers and travel agents, prostitutes and hawkers, sultans and shamans, presidents and terrorists. The heat, the dirt, the desperation, the shoving, the smiling, the living, the looking, the laughing, the hurrying. THE PUPPET MASTER OF JAVA is a place you haven’t been before.

THE PUPPET MASTER OF JAVA is Indonesia.

Having travelled in Indonesia, lived and worked in Jakarta from the late 1990's to early 2000's the places Alexander Crane conjures up are accurately portrayed...Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali...it is a story that is evocative, daring and gripping. A masterful tale that captures Java and Indonesia. But is also encapsulates the challenges a newly democratic nation faced. The story of love across cultures and the challenges this presents resonates from the pages. I married a Javanese girl and return to Java regularly. Alexander Crane made me feel, smell, taste and sense Indonesia. An excellent story that will leave lasting images and thoughts after you finish.

Primarily about two back packers, one is intensely annoying, he is meant to be like this, but as roughly half the book is about him it becomes irksome. There is far more information and history about Indonesia than I was expecting, needed or was interested in. Some of it was interesting and thought provoking but there was just too much. The other backpacker was a bit of a limp lettuce but his side of the story was far more involving and I enjoyed how the relationships developed in the book. The book has succeeded in teaching me that Indonesia is a very complicated and troubled country and the European influence over the years, like in so many other countries in the world, is partially to blame. However, I am sure it was not the Author's intention but it has convinced me that Indonesia is not somewhere I would be rushing to visit.

Recommended by a friend this novel was a real find. I became enchanted by this book almost instantly. It recreated my memories of the people, the sounds, smells and heat of a place visited long ago. But what I will remember is the characters and the thrilling ending the night of the Bali tragedy. Such sadness but with hope. I will recommend this book as highly to others as it was to me.

If you, like me, sit in an office dreaming of those days when all you had was a backpack, too little money and a battered guide book this novel is a brilliant read. It reminds you of all the adventures you had and the ones you hope are still to come. I haven't been to Indonesia but this novel took me there. One day I will go!

An intricate and intelligently written book that intertwines a beautifully gritty depiction of Indonesia life against the life of a backpacker. The events of Bali in 2001 provide historical perspective against which the book is written. A perfect backpackers companion.

5.0 out of 5 stars a memorable story!

It’s nice when you can find an interesting book that keeps your attention, provides a lot of information about the places in which it takes place, and has some very memorable characters. While the book could definitely use more editing and proofreading, it was a great read and definitely I would recommend it if you’d like to learn about the peoples, culture, history, and what it’s like to live in or visit Indonesia.

Excellent story told in multiple perspectives about two backpackers travelling through Indonesia and the dramatic turns of events that will change their lives together.

Much like his other stories Crane's writing is more about the character development and evolution rather than the events occurring around them.

Great piece about personal growth, friendship and adapting to other cultures. Loved it.
