Runaway Summer (Polwenna Bay Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,382 ratings

Polwenna Bay - Open the first page as a stranger and turn the last as a friend ❤️

Introducing the Tremaines – seven siblings who call the beautiful Cornish fishing village of Polwenna Bay home. Raised by their grandmother to be independent and strong, each is on a journey to find love even when the odds seem stacked against them.

Can Your First Love Also Be Your Last?

When her world falls apart, Summer Penhalligan flees home to Cornwall and straight into the path of the childhood sweetheart who shattered her heart. Summer has kept a big secret from him for over a decade - will it be uncovered now she’s back in Polwenna Bay? And does she still have feelings for him? If so, her return will mean even more heartbreak when he discovers the truth.

Jake Tremaine has travelled the world but always finds himself returning to Cornwall. While Jake knows his attention should be focused on rescuing the family marina, his determined business partner Ella St Milton is set on working her way into his affections and will not tolerate a rival. The return of his childhood sweetheart is a complication Jake can do without and his attraction to Summer surely no more than nostalgia?

But if their feelings are only echoes of the past, why are Jake and Summer increasingly drawn to memories of a long ago romance – especially when they both know the dangers?

Set against the stunning backdrop of Cornwall, this warm-hearted romantic saga explores themes of love, loyalty, and the power of healing and is perfect for fans of Jenny Colgan, Rosamunde Pilcher and Beyond Paradise.

Runaway Summer is the first novel in Ruth Saberton's Amazon UK Bestselling series about the life and loves of the Tremaine family of Cornwall's Polwenna Bay. While is can easily be read as a standalone story you are very likely to enjoy the other books too.

Dear Amazon readers,

Thank you for visiting my author area and for all your reviews and feedback. It’s wonderful to know that people enjoy my books and it makes my soul lift to know that my characters come alive in the imaginations and hearts of readers all around the world. Whenever a reader takes the time let a writer know that their novels are enjoyed, it’s so much appreciated.

I always knew I want to be a writer and it really is the best job in the world to be able to write and share my stories. From an early age, I was busy filling note books with stories – mostly about ponies – and when my debut novel, 'Katy Carter Wants a Hero' was championed by Richard and Judy, and short-listed for the RNA's Romantic Comedy of the Year Award, it was a dream come true.

Since then I’ve written almost thirty books. I write under my own name, but I also have several pen names which include Jessica Fox, Georgie Carter, Holly Cavendish and Lucy Hepburn. I’m published by Orion, Pan Macmillan, Harper Collins and Millington Press respectively. It’s been a busy few years!

I’m lucky enough to live in and write about beautiful Cornwall. Living deep in du Maurier land, I’m never short of inspiration and I’m thrilled that my last novel, THE LETTER, was a finalist in the prestigious Winston Graham Prize for Historical Fiction and was also shortlisted for the Gorsedh Kernow Holyer an Gof Fiction prize. Writing about Cornwall is a joy – the county is absolutely magical and there are many more novels to come. My latest novel, THE PROMISE, is set in Cornwall between WW2 and the present day and I’m so excited to be sharing it with my readers. It’s a book that truly came from my soul and it means the world to me.

When I’m not writing, I love to talk to my readers. Please say ‘hello’ on my website www.ruthsaberton.com or catch up with my life in Instagram @ruthsabertonauthor or via Facebook www.facebook.com/ruthsabertonauthor

Brightest wishes,

I worry when I write a book review that I will never do the Author and the book justice. This book sells itself though really as soon as you read the synopsis.
I was so excited to be asked to read and review this book before its release and I was not disappointed. I have loved all of Ruth’s books to date and have also visited Polperro where some of her books are based upon. When reading one of her books I get so lost in the story and I am instantly transported back to the lovely fishing village and all its surrounding beauty.
Like her other books this one does not disappoint. You are instantly drawn into the story and fall in love with all the characters. I became so hooked I could not put the book down.
Summer Penhalligan has left Polwenna Bay searching for fame and fortune in the bright lights of London and trying not to give a second thought to the lost love of her life, Jake, her childhood sweetheart.
Summer is forced to run back home to escape a nightmare boyfriend back to the place she holds in her heart Polwenna Bay.
There is lots of romance and humour in this book which makes it an absolute delight to read. This book is a wonderful read leaving you wanting more. It’s good to know that this is part one in a new series and Ruth is busy writing book 2…..hurry up Ruth!
I look forward to reading book 2 and being transported back to the wonderful Polennwa Bay and all its amazing characters.
Grad yourself a comfy chair, a big mug of tea and the cookie tin and get stuck into this delightful story. You will not be disappointed.

First book I've read by this author and it was very enjoyable. Set in Cornwall it's a beautiful location and the the story has some very interesting characters. When Summer returns home from London after fleeing from an abusive relationship she meets up with her first love ,but she has to come to terms with her past before she can finally find the happiness she deserves A good novel and will definitely read some more of Ruth's work

I really loved this book. It is far more than just a "chicklit" book. The descriptions of the area and the obvious knowledge about fishing make it a really excellent read The characters are written so well that I feel I would know them if met them - though perhaps the blatant good looks are a bit OTT, I have never met such gorgeous blokes :-(
The story is of Summer who has been living in London for 12 years and has now escaped her bullying and harming fiancé to go back to her home town. There she meets the man she has really been in love with "always".
The clever bit is that although we all know from the first word almost that they will end up together, the way it is written, and the way they get together is so good to read.

This series covers the romances of a whole family, with a couple of off-shoots included.
I thought books 1-3 were excellent. Well-written, well-paced and endearing. I then proceeded to buy the rest of the series, although I thought £4.99 for an e-book was a bit eye-wateringly expensive.
Book 4 was okay. Books 5-7 went downhill. Sloppy editing and some actual factual errors which wouldn't have needed much (a Google check) to make sure they were accurate.
No, with regret, I didn't note them down at the time as I generally read for uninterrupted enjoyment and don't expect to be noting down editing errors or mistakes.
While reading the whole series satisfied my curiosity about the whole family, I felt the author had lost interest which is why the later books were more light-weight and sloppily written. Perhaps writing seven books was over-amibitious, I don't know, but I felt annoyed that I'd paid a lot of money for what degenerated into indifferent writing.

This book held me captivated from the moment I started to read it. The character development is amazing and quickly you are drawn into the life of a small cornish fishing village. I enjoyed it so much that I downloaded the rest of the series before I even finished the first book.

The focus of the first book is Summer and Jake, but very cleverly interwines a whole community and the issues they experience. Polwenna bay is described so beautifully that it feels like you have been there.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone no matter what genre of book you prefer to read.

Perfect summer read, with images to transport you to the Cornish coastline and seaside villages. Ruth is an author who keeps in touch with her readers and somehow when you've corresponded with the author the book takes on more significance.
I first read her book, 'The Letter', and loved it, especially the historical part. Although this is different and rather less emotional, it is an enjoyable read and I'll be downloading the subsequent books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Escape!
Reviewed in the United States on 5 May 2015
This is not my first Ruth Saberton book I've had the honor to read, but I do believe it's my favorite thus far! I first discovered Ms. Saberton when I had read all of Milly Johnson, Jill Mansell and Katie Fforde's books and was searching for another author who might could capture my attention as my fav authors. Her books def have no disappointed.

Runaway Summer feels totally different than other Ruth Saberton books I've read. In Runaway Summer, we meet Summer, a now famous model who is fleeing her life of fame to return to her roots and the safety of her childhood home in Polwenna Bay. Summer, who was raised to thrive in the spotlight found the fame that her mother had always wanted for her.

Not everyone tho, is proud of Summer and the success and fame she's found. Mo her once best friend, is less than thrilled when she discovers that Summers come back. When Mo keeps finding her brother Jake with Summer she is boiling hot.

Jake, Summer's first love has never been able to fully leave behind the love he's held for Summer. Now that she's returned, all of those old feelings come rushing back. He sees that there's more to Summer's arrival than she's telling.

Runaway Summer is filled with charming characters. We aren't only following Summer and Jake's story, but we are also introduced to what I suspect will become beginnings of other books for a "Polwena Bay" series. There is plenty of seeds that have been dropped in Runaway Summer to lend itself to a fun filled series where hopefully we will learn even more of the supporting characters we meet in Runaway Summer.

Overall, this isn't the kind of book that's destined to change lives or to unlock any deep mysteries to the secrets of life, but it is fabulous escapism at its finest. If your looking for a great summer book to get lost in, this def is a great one!

Nice character development reminds me of a Binchy novel but sometimes first person thoughts are to long and dragged out and you wish the author would just get to the point. The positive is the characters are nicely drawn out and you become vested in their lives. A nice summer read
