Nine Eyes Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 77 ratings

Welcome To Sinner's Wake...
When a group of five documentary film makers go to the Highlands of Scotland to investigate the legendary Bèist an t-Sluic – the Beast of the Hollow – they think they're made. A drowned church, tales of a water demon that inhabits it, rumours of human sacrifice… it's almost too good to be true.
It doesn't take them too long to realise that it is. Because the God of Nine Eyes is waiting.
And it is hungry.

CJ Waller has taken me from the highlands of Scotland to the depths of hell and back with this atmospheric tale that is so fast paced I forgot about time and finished it, breathless, in a few short hours. The imagery at times left me chilled to the bone, that sunken church will stay with me. And Sadie Decker, well let's not get me started about her...
The characters are great to say the least and their relationships will remind you of your own group of friends, very real and very complex. What starts as a fact finding mission about a local legend spirals out of control to the very edge of hell itself. A rip roaring read.

When a team of documentary makers turn up in a remote Scottish village with a dark secret, they're not exactly welcomed with open arms. But as the truth of the drowned church is revealed, the reader is drawn into a sinister world. This is a tried and tested formula but told with a fresh and original voice, guaranteeing a satisfying read. CJ Waller evokes a wonderful sense of place, and the book is perfectly paced, the dread ramping up with every page. It's the sort of novel that's hard to put down and I read it in two sessions. This is not a usual genre for me, but after being recommended this novel, I'll definitely be checking out more by this author. Highly recommended.

I'm not sure, the booked lacked substance, it kept you wanting to read, but you wanted it to finish. The normal build up was not there. Actually I don't know what to say, but it was average. If you get the book free and you got a few hours on a rainy day, give it a go.

Wow! Couldn't put this down once I'd started reading it, and not many books have that effect on me. C.J. Waller knows how to scare the reader with the skill and penchant of a master horror writer. It's got the lot, mystery, creeping mist, weird villagers and of course, the loch. Don't go near the loch seemed to be the unspoken warning - but of course - the group of friends and vloggers do exactly that. This isn't just a horror story in which it's easy to guess what happens next, because you would be wrong to assume. Nothing comes close to imagining the full import of the outcome - a true spine tingler. Have previously read Predator X and will be reading anything else this author writes.

Heart-thumping terror from CJ Waller. I enjoyed her earlier Predator X a great deal, and Nine Eyes is, if anything, even better. The remote Scottish highland setting plays host to a typically contemporary group of main characters - a bunch of amateur vloggers seeking out local myths and mysteries to solve and dreaming of hitting the big time. However, the setting becomes weirdly more remote even than it should be. The sense of foreboding is skilfully built as the team find themselves uncomvering more questions than answers. The central mystery of the drowned church - who drowned it and why? - comes to dominate, through the eerie diving sequences to the final, cataclysmic denouement. The author successfully keeps the reader guessing throughout, and to call this a page-turner wouldn't be doing it justice - I tore through it in a day and a half. Five easy stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Quand la bête sort des profondeurs...
Reviewed in France on 26 May 2015

4.0 out of 5 stars A good gothic style horror story.........
Reviewed in the United States on 24 July 2015
I’ve read another book by CJ Waller and this one is better. It’s a horror story located near a Loch in Scotland (not the famous one). I thought it might be similar to the famous one but was highly mistaken. It’s a good horror story somewhat in the vein of Lovecraft. It’s less about the “creature” and more about the suspense and building horror experienced by a group of film makers leading to the emergence and genesis of the creature. It centers around a small, isolated Scottish village, a departed son of that village and the deep, dark secret it posses while inexorably drawing the film crew into its gothic like horror. It’s a spellbinding tale and for me the pages flew by. While not a literary masterpiece, I thoroughly enjoyed it and finished in one sitting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat enjoyable, but clumsy in places and not well thought out or developed.
Reviewed in the United States on 24 October 2016
“Nine Eyes” is a horror story by author C.J. Waller. It’s about a group of internet bloggers who search out old myths, legends, and hauntings with the hopes of one day hitting it big and getting their own documentary show. After many less than successful adventures, the group travels back to Brandon Decker’s home town to face a horror so terrible that Brandon had completely blocked it from his memory. What they find is upon arriving is a monster beyond anything they imagined……and it’s living in a church…..buried underneath a loch…….and it’ been calling to Brandon.

This is the second book that I’ve read by Waller. The first was “Predator X” which I thoroughly enjoyed. This one was not as good. Waller starts the story well enough and develops some genuine tension as the protagonists are forced to stay in a creepy town where everyone is more than a little unwelcoming, and are obviously hiding something. Her imagery of the underwater church is vivid and scary. Even the first encounter with the monster is well done and further enhances the general sense of dread that Waller established with the earlier portion of the book. Where this one starts to come off the rails a bit is once the story reaches the climax. The eventual showdown between the people and the monster is a mess. There isn’t enough background information given beforehand to help the reader understand why certain things are happening. The power that is used to combat the monster is never really explained, so you never find out how or why it works, nor where Sadie Decker got it to begin with. I did enjoy the twist at the end of the battle scene, but it was largely overshadowed by all of the other things that were happening that didn’t really make sense. I wonder if Waller realized that she had omitted too much needed information when she proofed the book, because the letter that Brandon’s mom mailed him seemed to try and reinforce some of the plot, but felt like an afterthought in the story.
The book ends in typical horror story fashion with the surviving characters broken and the possibility that the story could continue at some point later. Because after all, the monster is never “really” dead, right?

All in all, this isn’t a bad book. It’s just not as good as it could have been. It’s worth the price of admission, but it’s by no means a masterpiece.

This read like a bad made for TV movie. The characters were not likeable. The dialogue was poor. The plot was predictable.
