Invasion (Alien Invasion Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 5,577 ratings

Start the first book in the blockbuster Invasion series; the breakout sci-fi series with over 1000 5-star reviews.

THEY ARE COMING. THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN...

The discovery of objects approaching from Jupiter's orbit sets humanity on edge, sending cities into panic. Most is unknown, but thanks to the popular Astral space app, everyone knows the few facts the government has tried to hide:

The objects are enormous spheres numbering in the dozens, maybe hundreds. They are on an approach vector toward Earth … and they will arrive in six days.

Entrepreneur Meyer Dempsey is in New York, realizing the time has come to act on all the preparations he’s made without ever consciously knowing why. For years Meyer has been preoccupied by a dreamlike sense of coming peril and knows where he must take his family … if, that is, they can make it before society eats itself alive with fear.

The end is only beginning ...

★★★★★ "This is a real page-turner. The action is fast paced, with lots of twists and turns. It's very hard to put down, and I'm pretty much exhausted from staying up every night until the wee hours of the morning." -- DBStevens

★★★★★ "I stayed up late Christmas Eve reading this book; I finished it Christmas morning. I hadn't planned on doing that. It just sort of happened. Why? The reason's simple: I couldn't put it down." -- Terrance A. Crow

★★★★★ "Invasion fully deserves its five stars for its thoughtful and grounded portrayal of life and love under duress. The authors integrated a great deal of prepper culture into the story, and every detail was carefully considered." -- Steven Pratt

★★★★★ "This is clearly the beginning of a huge series, and should be read as such...if you don't have the patience to watch a complex tapestry of events unfold over several books, you probably don't want to start this story. If, on the other hand, you LOVE big scifi stories with multiple threads and more than one mystery...you'll love Invasion." -- B. Johnson

★★★★★ "The tension and suspense is top-notch and kept me reading far into the night. These guys know how to write a thriller, I'm telling you. This is probably the best thriller I've read all year. I would pick this book over anything written by Stephen King or Dean Koontz, no question." -- Mark Messick

This relentless, page-turning tale of first contact is the first book in the Alien Invasion completed series.

I found this book on here on Amazon as I searched for anything relating to an alien invasion.

This was a little hard to get into at first, as I didn’t understand what was going on and wasn’t sure I liked the main character. But that only lasted a few pages. The premise is gripping. Alien space ships have been spotted heading to earth and they will reach it in six days. It’s then a tense-filled journey for Meyer to get his family to safety.

Overall, this is an exciting read and I couldn’t put it down. Every opportunity I wanted to read as every chapter was a countdown to day the UFOs arrived. All the time hoping the family made it to their destination. My heart was in mouth most of the time. Fantastic book, and I’ve immediately downloaded the next one. I recommend it.

A thoroughly enjoyable read, with well thought out characters who have believable thoughts and reactions. It's an exciting race against time, and I liked the fact that Book 1 deals primarily with pre-invasion, thus giving enough time to set up the world these characters live in, and their relationships with each other. This will make Book 2 all the more interesting, I reckon, because any 'weird sh*t' that goes down is set against the backdrop of our world's reality.

Couple of clunky bits (but in no way did they detract from the enjoyment): Raj seems quite underwritten, and we have very little sense of his loss regarding his family.

Meyer, being the head of a multi-media corporation, should have had some interaction with his underlings/PA/lawyers/right hand person when he was getting the hell out of NYC. It felt like the authors didn't want to think about it - and to be fair, it could detract and distract from the focal points, but I think just a small nod to Meyer's empire would have been good at the beginning, to anchor the reality.

The writers of this series are technically and stylistically competent. The prose flows easily enough and is largely free of the errors one so often finds in Kindle books.

I found most of the characters to be annoying and often unpleasant. The core cast is a bunch of privileged whites with a token representative of a non-white ethnic group. I'm not saying that the characters were badly drawn or superficial: possibly the reverse is true. Maybe the reason I disliked the characters is that they were mostly fallible and flawed: selfish, ruthless, authoritarian, materialistic, exploitative. Perhaps I've grown too used to being given a clear hero to root for,

Superficially the pacing is good. The books in this series are presented according to a clear hook-in marketing strategy, with key plot developments actually spread pretty thinly. I'm a little surprised that this, and the second book in the series, retain one's interest as well as they do. Unfortunately I tend to get impatient with unnecessary procrastination and, indeed, with inflation of text for the sake of spreading the story across more volumes.

Bottom line: an ok story (so far) frustratingly spread across more books than the substance can sustain. Competent writing, but better marketing.

I'm not sure if I will press on with reading further.

I can highly recommend this book.
It's not really about a potential alien invasion but how a small family group cope with trying to reach their safe place.
Although I wasn't keen on a few of the characters it makes sense that we wont like everyone so this made them more realistic.
For me it really was a page turner and I don't often say that.
I don't understand why some reviewers found it boring - OK some parts were a bit slow but 95% of it was fine.

Maybe some readers prefer beat-em-up books with simply lots of action but I liked the character insights even if I don't like some of the people.
I agree that it's a shame that the cast has to be disgustingly wealthy but maybe there will be a reason for this in later books and why certain individuals are abducted.

I've now started to read the 2nd book and so far it's going well and has some nice unexpected twists.

I'm not usually much of a sci-fi reader, but I'm a huge fan of these guys and their SPP podcast, and as someone looking to begin serialisation I thought I'd give it a try.

Firstly, I loved the feel of the whole book. The shifting perspectives of the character add a nice depth to the story and means that you can feel the growing panic of the invasion from a variety of different angles. There's a definite direction the story moves in and you find yourself wondering how and when they will achieve what they're after. There isn't really any points where I felt the story dipped, or where I felt it dragged on. There was a nice pace and it kept me interested.

In terms of character development, I'd say that I would have liked a bit more. There were definite traits and personalities, but I felt the overworld of the story had more attention. Obviously in an epic alien invasion story, this makes sense. But for me, I didn't feel too much for them.

Overall, this is definitely one to read for sci-fi fans. The fact that this is entirely self-published is also a definite bonus. I WILL be reading the next as I'm curious to see how the next one pans out. I have to admit, the cliffhanger took me by surprise and I'm interested to see where that goes.

Good job guys, keep up the good work!

This book pulled me along, with characters who climbed out of the pages. The storytelling is relaxed and confident - for ease of reading I award a gold star to the authors. And the big questions it hints at exploring further as the series progresses are some of my own. So: win!

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of humans with aliens in the wings
Reviewed in the United States on 19 December 2016
I enjoyed Invasion very much. The characters were real, their voices were distinct, and they felt alive to me. The story followed the basic outline of end-of-the-world/first contact plot, but did it so well that I enjoyed every chapter. There were no huge chase scenes or shootouts, and not much of alien technology other than ships dotting the skies. All the drama grew from humans facing human-sized challenges, like traffic jams and road rage, living without electrical power, and just getting from point A to point B.

The group trying to get to Point B (from the East Coast to Colorado) is a family of four, plus a former wife/stepmom and a daughter's boyfriend who some would rather not have tagging along. See? A family under pressure, plus a complication (wife + ex-wife) or two (boy + girl = ?), the meat and potatoes of dramas in all genres.

This is a stripped down apocalypse, with the barest amount of undeniable alien presence possible. It's all about people, both extraordinary and not, and how they deal with each degree of the end of life as they knew it. This may not be a recommendation to some readers, but in my opinion, this kind of careful attention to the minutiae of human-ness sets this story apart as not just entertainment, but literature: how the characters succeed and fail at coping with extraordinary demands, if and how they adjust their moral compasses in the name of survival, and some coming of age moments as well (spoiler for Book 2!). It all is so very well done.

There is a fairly important feature of the story that sets it apart from straight science fiction. Meyer, the main character, has had a series of metaphysical/spiritual events in his life which have prepared him for the invasion, so he is much better prepared for it--so prepared, in fact, that others are a bit spooked by it. I believe the term for this genre is visionary fiction, when a character is faced by a reality that is different and more challenging--metaphysically "bigger"--than he/she knew previously, and must must undergo a radical internal adjustment to match and meet that reality. In Invasion, Meyer has a running head start in that process, but still the readers are granted a sense of the scope of the change he has been required to undergo through flashbacks from several perspectives.

Invasion fully deserves its five stars for its thoughtful and grounded portrayal of life and love under duress. The authors integrated a great deal of prepper culture into the story, and every detail was carefully considered. Plus, I found myself quite interested in the aliens despite the lack of actual contact in this first book of the trilogy. I got book two at the earliest opportunity, and I'll mention now that I enjoyed it every bit as much as I thought I would.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Plot-less page-turner
Reviewed in Italy on 9 August 2016
I read this book in two days: it's compelling, well-written, and it does a pretty good job when it comes to depicting mass panic and riots in a credible way. My only problem is that it's almost plot-less: things happen along the way, but the real shit never hits the fan, and after all the fuss, we are stuck at Day 1: the situation hasn't evolved that much, with the only exception of a change in location. What happens in the last two pages could have happened in the exact same way in New York, and we are left wondering whether all the efforts put into escaping were wasted and discarded right at the end or not.
