Memory Man: The Gripping Thriller You Won't Be Able To Forget (Amos Decker series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 103,100 ratings

'Baldacci is the master of American detective stories' - Jeffrey Archer

The first in the Amos Decker series, Memory Man is an astounding novel from blockbuster author David Baldacci, where an extraordinary man races to hunt down a terrible killer.

*****

When Amos Decker returned home eighteen months ago to find the bodies of his wife and only daughter, he didn't think he could carry on living. Overwhelmed with grief, he saw his life spiral out of control, losing his job as a detective, his house and his self-respect.

But when his former partner in the police, Mary Lancaster, visits to tell him that someone has confessed to the murder of his family, he knows he owes it to his wife and child to seek justice for them.

As Decker comes to terms with the news, tragedy strikes at the local school. Thirteen teenagers are gunned down, and the killer is at large. Following the serious brain injury Amos suffered as a professional footballer, he gained a remarkable gift – and the police believe that this unusual skill will assist in the hunt for the killer.

Amos must endure the memories he would rather forget, and when new evidence links the murders, he is left with only one option.

Memory Man will stay with you long after the turn of the final page. The series continues with The Last Mile.

And enjoy more of Baldacci's enthralling writing with
To Die For, the electrifying Travis Devine thriller.

David Baldacci has been writing since childhood, when his mother gave him a lined notebook in which to write down his stories. (Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she'd given him the notebook to keep him quiet, "because every mom needs a break now and then.")

David published his first novel, ABSOLUTE POWER, in 1996. The feature film adaptation followed, with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. In total, David has published 50 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers and several have been adapted for film and television. His novels have been translated into over 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide. David has also published seven novels for younger readers.

David is also the cofounder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy programs across the United States.

The plot jumps about from one snippet to the next and you expect the FBI to follow up on standard procedures
But the story holds you in its grip so a good idea and a good read
  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 October 2021
If you just go with the flow, and accept the scenarios put before you in this thriller, then (like me) you can easily get lost in this excellent novel by David Baldacci. I recall reading this author’s earlier works (Absolute Power was a favourite) and I enjoyed each one of his books. In recent times, friends have recommended the Amos Decker series, so a few days ago I finally got around to buying a copy of the first one: Memory Man. Amos is a strange beast of a man, very unlike the private investigators you find in most novels within this genre. Amos is 6ft 5in tall, weighs a whopping 25 stone, and to all intents and purposes has rather let himself go in recent times. He lives in a one-room apartment situated within a run-down hotel. He’s a former police detective, who left the force after returning home one evening, and finding his wife and daughter brutally murdered. The reason for their murders is a mystery, and the killer has never been found.

In his younger days, Amos was a professional football player whose career was cut short by a terrible head injury sustained on the field. During his recovery he was found to have developed a condition known as hyperthymesia, which means he never forgets things - an almost perfect memory in other words. This ability has had good, and not so good effects on him. The one downside to this condition is that he has difficulty relating to other people, and shows little in the way of empathy to others, often appearing rude.

In the novel’s opening pages, Amos finds out about a mass shooting at Mansfield High School, where he had attended as a child. When he realises that his previous partner, Mary Lancaster is investigating the case, he decides to offer his help….

All I can add is that this was a proverbial page-turner, and had me engrossed for the three days it took to finish it - no mean feat for a 571 page novel! I was so impressed that I’m definitely going to work my way through the following books in the series. For those interested, here’s the series in order:
    Memory Man
    The Last Mile
    The Fix
    The Fallen
    Redemption
    Walk The Wire

Anyway, for thrill seekers out there I thoroughly recommend this book to you. Many thanks for taking time out to read my review, I do hope you found it of use, and that you feel encouraged to get your hands on a copy of Memory Man. Reading is a passion of mine, and I loved reading this.

It's been years since I read a book by this author, I think because his books are rarely discounted down enough for me !! I will try the second in this series, though I did get a tad bogged down with this one here and there. I liked his brain issue regarding the never-forgetting side of things but I wasn't keen on the seeing in colours and the numbers at all. I think in this case less would've been more. One condition was plenty to suffice and to keep us entertained.
I really liked the ladies Amos worked with on the case, both Lancaster and Jamison. Though WHY is it always so acceptable in the States to refer to each other by surnames all the time ? To me it is pretty rude but they do it over there all the time with no offence seemingly taken. I don't like it.
I did make a note that Lancaster's gum-chewing habit got mentioned too often, as did men's pocket squares....not anything I'd usually notice, if not for the needless repetition.
He wrote "I'd been the first one doing it" and it should be "I'd have been the first one doing it" and Yincision needed a space inserted. Then he writes lighted up, which is an oft-written Americanism I hate, as opposed to lit up, then ferret where I'd use ferry....a lot hung upon a sentence uttered...."But it's good" when the actual wording was "But this is good" so the back 'n forth over that phraseology for me was negated by this.
It's a good tale but it does get a little boggy and could probably lose 100 pages...I prefer a longer story but not when it ends up being a little padded to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amos Decker died twice on a football field, and when he recovered his brain was changed
Reviewed in the United States on 2 March 2025
He now has hyperthymesia, which means he cannot forget anything, anything he sees or reads is stored permanently in his brain. He has synesthesia, he sees things in colors.

After he was in therapy to help him with his “new” brain, Amos became a cop, then a detective. All this changed when his wife and daughter were murdered in their home. Now he is basically homeless, though he has graduated from living in a cardboard box to living in a hotel room.

When he gets a visit from his former partner, Mary Lancaster, he learns that a man has turned himself in to the police as the killer of Amos’ family. Amos makes it his mission to,find out if the man is guilty, and during his questioning of the man (during an innovative means of accessing the jail cells) there is a mass shooting at the high school.

The murder of Amos’s family and the high school shootings become linked and are not the only killings that seem to all lead back to a vendetta against Amos. And it appears that the murderer or murderers are always a few steps ahead of Amos, the Burlington Police, and the FBI.

A good yarn that takes you on an emotional roller coaster. Recommended for anyone who likes a good mystery and in this book you get 2 for the price of 1.
