The Grand Reopening Of Dandelion Cafe: The perfect uplifting escapist romantic comedy beach read for summer 2023 (Cherry Pie Island, Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 4,336 ratings

'You know you're in for a treat when you open a Jenny Oliver book' Debbie Johnson

From the top 10 best-selling author of The Summerhouse by the Sea

Welcome to Jenny Oliver’s brand new Cherry Pie Island series!

Home, Sweet Home….?

There’s nowhere more deliciously welcoming…

When Annie White steps back onto Cherry Pie Island, it’s safe to say her newly inherited Dandelion Café has seen better days! And while her childhood home on the Thames-side island idyll is exactly the same retreat from the bustle of London she remembers, Annie’s not convinced that she’ll be sticking around. Not that she can bear the idea of letting her dedicated, if endearingly disorganised staff lose their jobs. Plus café life does also have the added bonus of working a stone’s throw away from millionaire Matt and his disarmingly charming smile!

One (shoestring budget) café makeover, a few delightful additions to the somewhat retro menu and a lot of cherry pie tastings later, The Dandelion Café is ready for its grand reopening! But once she’s brought the dilapidated old café back to life, Annie finds herself wishing her stay on the island was just a bit longer. She always intended to go back to the big city…but could island living finally have lured her back home for good?

Perfect for fans of Lucy Diamond, Sophie Kinsella and Cathy Bramley.

The Cherry Pie Island series

The Grand Reopening of Dandelion Café – Book 1

The Vintage Ice Cream Van Road Trip – Book 2

The Great Allotment Challenge – Book 3

One Summer Night at the Ritz – Book 4

Lovely story. Easy to read as not too many people in it - that's my age thing.

The Grand Reopening of Dandelion Cafe is the first book in a new series from Jenny Oliver set on the magical sounding Cherry Pie island.

When Annie inherits the Dandelion Cafe she returns home to Cherry Pie island to see whether it's possible to continue to run it from a distance or whether it's best to cut all ties and sell it for its development value. And she's not surprised to find that nothing has changed since she was a kid, the same tired fittings and even Martha is still working there, but it's the memories that make it hardest for her to let go...

From the off it was clear that there was history as to why Annie left the island, which we do eventually discover, and you could feel her indecision as to what to do with the cafe, sell or refurbish. Obviously she went with the latter by undergoing a budget makeover using whatever items/materials she could lay her hands on as otherwise there wouldn't have been a story to tell and I loved the way her friends, old and new, all pulled together to help her achieve her dream.

The island certainly appears to have a diverse mix of characters, certainly the ones we've met so far, and I'm definitely looking forward to getting to know more of them in the upcoming books in the series. I have to admit that if I had Jonathan as a brother I too might not want to come back and live on Cherry Pie Island permanently! And of course there has to be a hunk and Matt Walker, an old school friend, certainly fits the bill although he has his own issues that he's dealing with.

I loved the setting of this small island just off the Thames coastline so you have the big city environment close by if you want to enjoy the bright lights of what London has to offer but if the quiet life is more your thing then you can definitely enjoy that on Cherry Pie island.

Overall it's a fun, entertaining read and I'm definitely looking forward to discovering more about the island and its residents in the rest of the series.

Thank you to Carina and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Jenny Oliver is one of those authors whose books you should never read on an empty stomach. I've been craving cherry pie and cream since the opening chapter of this book! Her writing reminded me very much of Jenny Colgan in that her writing is warm, engaging and a lighthearted read.. I felt that the book was rather short and because of this the characters were rather one dimensional.

Jenny Oliver descriptive writing of the food, the cafe and the island were wonderful however, for me, in places this was also a negative aspect of the book. Sometime the writing was overly descriptive where is just wasn't necessary and didn't add anything to the book. I also wasn't keen on the reference to current technology such as the iphone 6 as it will make the book dated in a couple of years.

I would definitely read the other books in this series and future books by Jenny Oliver. I would give this 3.5 stars if there was an option as it is deserving of more than 3 but not quite a 4 for the points mentioned.

This is a lovely uplifting story and a promising start to the series - I'm off to buy the next couple of books having read this in one sitting.

I love the imagery of the cherry trees, the description of the cafe and the island itself - as much as I loved meeting these characters and getting a glimpse into their worlds. Very sweet story, it's a perfect light-hearted read when you just need a little bit of a distraction or something to enjoy while sitting in the sun.

I really liked this author's voice and her descriptive work is particularly powerful. Her characters were real and not stereotypical and I would quite like to have biffed the heroine's brother on the nose.

I loved the hero and heroine. For my personal tastes, I would have liked a higher-stakes plot as it all came together a touch too easily.

I really enjoyed this book and find it easy to give it 5 stars, a brilliant start to The Cherry Pie Island series. It contains family trials and tribulations and the same amongst a close knit community. I loved Annie who has inherited The Dandelion Cafe from her father and after much soul searching has decided to give it a chance and gives it a revamp on a shoestring. The spark from Matt, know to her from her childhood, helped her come to the right decision. I eagerly await the next book and am off to the supermarket to buy a cherry pie!

it is the first time i have read Jenny Oliver and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Its an easy read, with believable characters and an interesting storyline and if you know a riverside cafe you can imagine the story taking place. You want the ending to be just as Jenny wrote it. I am looking forward to reading the next one.

With a heavy heart for her past relationship decisions, Annie White had left behind her childhood home (and irritating brother) on the lovely Cherry Pie Island. Annie works hard to create a successful professional life for herself in London as a Graphic Artist. She owns her home, has savings and her work is in demand. Feeling pleased with her accomplishments, Annie finds herself the unexpected inherited owner of the Island town's Dandelion Cafe, famous for it's delicious Cherry Pie. At first look, the quaint Cafe seems too worn down and Annie has to seriously consider just closing the doors... but can she shut the doors and walk away from the employees? Surprising even herself, Annie decides to crib together a "remodel" using what's available for donation in the community... and a little sweat equity soon draws people together to bring re-newed hope and life to the Dandelion Cafe and to Annie.... I enjoy Jenny Oliver's books and look forward to her next, and her next and her next!

This book is a surprise in the way it considers family relationships and how people can view their interactions so differently. It draws you in quickly, making you interested in the main character and the events which led up to her life. There are hints of interesting details in the lives of the other characters which will hopefully be expanded in later books.

It was a feel good book which did allow for past mistakes to be forgiven if they were not repeated. Definitely buying the rest of the books in the series.

Wonderfully descriptive - this reader finds herself practically tasting such a pie. Loved the feel of the Island and the slightly shabby but deliciously cozy cafe with characters you will want to follow. Oh, to have such a great place to people-watch.
