- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 March 2023A brilliant book I could not put down. Get your tissues ready, this book really breaks your heart but feel your heart swell at the same time. Thank you Alison. X
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2019It is rare for me to give up on a book, especially one I have paid good money for. This story is about Daddy’s girl, Kate telling her parents she is in a same sex relationship and her father’ s inability to accept it. If it had been written 40 or 50 years ago, maybe this attitude would have been more prevalent,- we are in the 21st century. These things are commonplace and nobody gets hung up about them.
The book veers between documenting every thought that comes into the couples’ head or describing in minute detail meals and places in Greece. The travel documentary bits are an improvement on the thought processes. As I said it was too slow and I didn’want to read any more after the third of the book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2015I was eagerly awaiting Alison's second novel as she has such a wonderful and expressive style of writing that draws you into the lives of the characters. This story is one of emotional anguish - how can you love someone when their lifestyle is one you can't accept? This little family unit starts to unravel when Kate tells her parents she is in love with another woman. Having been a daddy's girl, almost to the exclusion of her mother, Kate is heartbroken when her beloved father cannot come to terms with her sexuality and their bond begins to unstick. It takes a family tragedy for David to learn that love means accepting the person unconditionally and for the damage to start to be repaired.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2018I always know a well written book when I can't seem to leave the characters even when I put the book down .
Beautifully written
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 December 2015The establishment of the circumstances and development of the characters involved in this emotional situation is handled skilfully by the author. The intimate descriptions of the locations where the storey unfolds ,adds to the quality and the readers total involvement in the story.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 March 2017Good subject to explore, but a little bit predictable. However, I did enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching story of a fathers love
This is a real page-turner! Written with such understanding. Alison Ragsdale couldn't have painted a more vivid picture of the characters and places in this moving story if she had used a paintbrush and canvas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent peek into a tough issue for a lot of people
I absolutely loved this book about a young woman who realizes she is gay and the struggles within her family after she breaks the news. I did take issue with WHEN she did it because I wouldn't have appreciated the timing if I were her mother or father, but do understand that it took her a while to work up her nerve and the feeling she had of needing to do it right then.
Her partner seemed so wonderful, kind, caring and very understanding. I wanted to go visit her bakery and talk to her. This is pretty much how I felt about all the characters although I felt so badly for her mother because of the way she was made to feel like the 3rd wheel most of the time.
Very good book about an issue that many families find themselves dealing with. Very good read, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking Presentation
I thought this was very well-done. When a daughter who has been distant from her mother, and more focused on her father (who adores her, also), reveals that the love of her life is another woman - everything changes. Neither parent responds in the way that the young woman expected - relationships alter. The characters were very well-developed and very believable. The situation did not turn into soap opera - the presentation was an honest attempt to explore the conflicts, disappointments, and struggles that ensue. Then the reader is hit with an extremely unfortunate occurrence that yet again alters perspectives and behaviors. Kudos to the author for her ability to pull you into the narrative and struggle along with the characters in an attempt to achieve a satisfactory resolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love conquers all...
Alison Ragsdale is a brilliant writer, and her stories are so warm and spellbinding that you just can't put her books down. Not only are the characters warm and 'real', but her style of prose allows you to 'feel' close to each of the characters - and you find yourself pulling for them, understanding their unique perspectives, and ultimately, wanting the best for each of them. The author also makes the reader think about their own reactions to the situation at hand, and seamlessly incorporates uplifting messages of commitment, love and friendship. If you haven't read Tuesday's Socks, it is also wonderful. Can hardly wait for the next book!
