I agree with other reviews - this book is by far the weakness in the series to date and the flashbacks really don't add anything to the story or the characters. However the action still ticks over and there are a couple of interesting developments in the plot to keep the book entertaining. Like other reviewers I love the series and I think its the best zombie/post-apocalyptic series I have read (just ahead of the DJ Molles Remaining series) but this is not the best so far! I cannot wait for the rest of the books in the series and the conclusion of the story which is definitely 5* rated for me - but this particular book is only worth of 4*

Book 7 of the series was not just as full on as the series has been so far. I think that the death of empires and fall of empires are going to be merging into one so really this book was a build up for the HoA mission.

When the action kicked off it really did all kick off and the introduction of the Russians to the stage should make for some great battles ahead.
the background stories to the cast, I didn't mind so much as I love hearing more about the history of the operators and how it has shaped them and their state of mind. still give it 5 stars because I kust cant put any of these books down!! cant wait for the next book

Another disaster, another mission, more death. Saying that, their hope, utter belief they will succeed and total inability to give in to the despair they must all privately feel uplifts the book.
Yes, there are a lot of somewhat 'dropped in' back stories that fracture the story a bit.
Yes, there is a lot of death and despair.
Yes, the book feels a few pages longer than it should have been - but!!
The humanity and action is both believable and gripping.

Finally finished Bk7 and the action doesnt let you down. Can all our heroes get back to each other? Lets wait and see. This is one ZA series that does not disapoint the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Expected!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 6 April 2017
Once you begin reading the Arisen series you find that no other Zombie Apocalypse series that you have read previously comes even close to what James has created. I have read more ZA books and series than I could possibly count and I can honestly say this series exceeds them all as purely a work of art. I have read some really good books and some pretty good series but, I have found that approximately 90% of the series I have read, by the time i delve into to the third book and if I am lucky, the fourth, I lose interest because the author is either no longer passionate about the story and is just trying to squeeze out more books, more money. That cannot be said about these, the Arisen series books. I have just finished this one, book six and I am so happy to say that each book gets better than the one before it. That a huge compliment to the author because book one was so awesomely spellbinding that I just knew that book two would disappoint me. As I began reading it I lost track of time and my surroundings until I heard a loud voice say, "What! It cant be the end!!" And trust me, I was mad and panicking because I did not know at the time that it was a series. After reading book five and realizing this author will never let me down since book five was even better than four, and four better than three etc., I went ahead and bought all of the remaining books in the series that were out at that time.. its everything and more that a true ZA fanatical reader seeks and hopes to find yet rarely does.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome!!
Reviewed in Canada on 3 December 2014
I can't say enough great things about this book/series. Once again I'm pulled right in and don't wanna let go. This is so much more than about zombies. Its about survivors, and surviving against all odds. I was constantly on the edge of my seat. Everything that could go wrong did. Starting with Juice, and his struggles, accepting that his time is coming and he's ready to die. To the possible outbreak behind the walls in Britain. The attacks on the JFK. Drakes numerous bad, very bad judgment calls. Introducing new characters, like Aliyev, the man with a god complex who started it all, and might be able to end it. But does he really want to? Or the Team of bad ass Russians, Spetsnaz, whom Juice and the Marines run into while on shore looking for supplies. While all this is going down, Juice realizes he's not ready to die. He needs to help save what's left of the world and get back to Alpha, his family. There's just way too many good things to say about this book, I know I've left some things out, but then you're just gonna have to read it yourself. Looking forward to the one..... It's gonna be a long 2 weeks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Someone finally does a zombie story right!
Reviewed in Australia on 16 March 2019
Finally! This entire 14+ book series is genre-changing. This....this is what a zombie apocalypse looks like. Hard, capable, violent, caring, professional, and even funny, people coming together and standing side by side to fight a never-ending but changing global-ending virus.
Military spec-ops vs zombies. Aircraft carrier vs zombies. Fighter jets and tactical warheads vs zombies. Apache gunships, tanks, and MRAPs vs zombies. All to create time for science to fight the billions of meat-eating staggering, sometimes-running/jumping/sprinting walking dead trying to eat them and their loved ones.
At the centre of it all, a small tight-knit group of the most professionally-capable warriors stand together, cracking jokes and staying not only human but humane.
I have never been so eager to voraciously read so many books so quickly. Even after 14 books, I wanted more. Fortunately...there is more.
Hey Amazon! Netflix! Anyone! Get this pinnacle of the zombie genre onto the TV screen ASAP. This series changes it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Saga of a world overrun by ZOMBIES
Reviewed in Canada on 22 November 2016
Each book tells the continuing saga of a world upside down where everything has changed due to an infection that turns 7 billion people into raving, human hungry zombies. This goes well beyond the Walking Dead for action as Fortress Britain, the only country left standing, is trying to reset the world to being zombie free.

The missions are many and the action is hot as American and British military conduct missions across the globe trying to find materials and people in a race to stop the extinction of the human race.

There are many characters in this saga and yet the author develops them with depth and reality. The protagonists and the antagonists seem to be so real, as does the action. Reading this saga pulls you in and places you in the middle of the action.

This HAS to be one of the BEST Zombie saga's going !!! Detail, information and realism pervades throughout the 12 books (books 13 & 14 will arrive) and I can't wait !

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid next installment, that never slows, and introduces new scenarios
Reviewed in Australia on 30 December 2014
A strong next installment in the Arisen series that moves along at a fast pace (with that being said, it is a short book, but that's good, as none of it is wasted), skipping a lot of the self-reflection and existentialism that seemed to drag down of some of the previous books.

In particular, I enjoyed this book for giving greater coverage of the events in Britain and the way civilians are reacting to both the outbreak and martial law, which I have always felt were among the most interesting concepts in Arisen. As well as characterizing and developing Juice's character, who I have always felt was a bit vague and unexplored member of Alpha. Moreover, book seven gives the readers a taste of Modern Warfare, and shows how survivors of the Apocalypse (namely the Russians in this instance) can be more dangerous than the Zombies.

In addition, book 7 introduces a new character, and some revelations about the disease itself, which while they don't directly influence events elsewhere (which can be exasperating at times, as several chapters are devoted to this new character), are sure to become more relevant in later installments.
