J.R.R. Tolkien: A Life Inspired Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 970 ratings

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was Professor of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at the University of Oxford. His research on Beowulf is still considered a standard in the field. Tolkien, however, unlike most Oxford dons, stepped out of his role as professor to create popular literature.

Tolkien’s best-known writings were The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, in which he created a fully realized world known as Middle-earth, vaguely identifiable as Northern Europe in a pre-history that never was. To bring his world to life, he produced detailed geography and cartography as well as a legendary background. He peopled the world with diverse types of inhabitants and created spoken and written languages for them. By doing this, he essentially created modern fantasy literature and a standard for subsequent writers to chase and miss. A British poll at the end of the twentieth century named The Lord of the Rings the most important English-language work of that century.

During his lifetime, Tolkien did not appreciate people focusing on him rather than on his writings. He felt that his writings were more worthy of attention. With apologies to the late gentleman, he is now due some notice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Man of Faith, Maker of Myths
Reviewed in the United States on 9 January 2015
Who is the man behind "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings?" This clear and easy to read book reveals the man through the events of his life, the faith that sustained him through times good and bad, and the words he committed to paper for the edification and enrichment of posterity. We are shown a man humble in his self-esteem, meticulous in his scholarship, devoted to family and friends, and rather embarrassed by the extraordinary fame that came to his door late in life. This review of Tolkien's life is a casual account, lacking footnotes, annotations, criticisms and references, but the book is aimed at the general reader who wants to know more about the man than read a tome of literary criticism, revealed in a manner that is anything but ponderous. I knew that Tolkien was a Catholic, but I really had no idea how much those beliefs had shaped the fantasy tales I first read in the 1960s, and the world of Middle-earth which I had long taken to be a realm without religion now seems infused with a natural philosophy that mirrors Christianity without sinking to the level of metaphor, as did the science fiction and fantasy tales of Tolkien's friend, C.S. Lewis. I recommend this book to fans of Middle-earth who want to know about the life behind that mythic realm without having to wade through a scholarly morass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and interesting

-Excellent rendering of Tolkien's love, religious, family, writing lives.
-Just reading this short biography, I found that in the times Tolkien lived, think-alike people loved to get together to discuss all sorts of subjects they had in common, be it for or against it. Tolkien started or was a co-founding member of many of those groups. Socializing (without the spouse) was really important too.
-I knew Tolkien was friend with CS Lewis for ~25 years but couldn't remember why they split in the end - religion. Not because CS was pushing his, more because JRR didn't like that CS didn't choose Catholicism like him but instead went for the Church of England.
-Tolkien also thought his writing came from God, just like the apostles ...
-I lift my hat to his sons (or just Christopher?) who finished and published his last works posthumously.
    -Kudos on editing.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting look at an influential man

While far too short to give sufficient detail of JRR's life, this book is a lovely primer. It gives sufficient insight into his history but does leave the reader wishing for more information. A very easy read and worth the time.
