    I've waited and waited for this book for over a year and normally read Kate's books in one sitting. However, due to personal circumstances it wasn't meant to be.
    I'll not talk about the storyline as you can get that from Amazon or the back of the book but what I will say is this;
    I think Kate's writing style is up there with val macdermids books. She has a knack of leading you towards who you think is a suspect and then boom! Your wrong!
    Half way through (as with Kate's other books) I thought "I know who the killer is" only to find I was wrong and the story weaves, twists and turns. The endings are always are a surprise.
    I would say if your a fan of macdermids work then you will enjoy this book but to be honest, I think Kate deserves the recognition now of being a stand alone author (and a brilliant one at that).
    The main character Alice for me is becoming more "human" and Likeable as in first books I found her a little cold and someone who was brilliant at her job, but unfeeling.
    I hope I don't spoil the story but was pleased to see that Alice finally opened up to her suppressed feelings towards Burns.
    I'm not used to writing reviews but feel as though I must as I enjoyed the book enormously and if you are thinking of giving Kate's books a try, all I can say is that you really won't be disappointed.

    I first discovered Kate Rhodes and her character, Dr Alice Quinten, a few years ago and definitely way before I started blogging. I read the first three of her books back to back before losing track. So several years later I am starting book four, River Of Souls and I have to say it feels kind of like walking into a room of old friends that you haven’t seen for years. You may need to ponder for a minute but something triggers recognition and you are off! It can be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading the others in the series first just to get yourself acquainted with the characters and their relationships.

    A great opening hook drew me into the novel, the dark description of the Thames and the bridges of London as a man takes the life of a priest. The story explores the relationship between the priest and a young woman who’d been attacked in a similar manner a year ago. Forensic Psychologist, Alice Quinten is called in to look at reopening the case. Her presence has been requested by the girls family who are prominent British politicians. Just what secrets and lies will she uncover and will Alice be able to move forward in her own personal life?

    I like Alice Quinten! She is a strong character, not in a ballsy kick-ass kind of way, but rather she has an inherent inner strength, professionalism, tenacity with the odd dash of self-deprecation thrown in. Her character is a testament to the author’s skill of developing well-rounded multi-dimensional characters who entice you into the pages and keep you there. Her relationships with others play a key part in the series from her brother Will who has bipolar disorder, her demanding mother and best friend Lola along with a face from the past and a potential new someone special in her life, Alice’s life is never dull. I love how the author uses these relationships to show Alice grow, reflect and develop.

    The plot runs along at a steady pace and a good sense of place sets you in the heart of London with the sound of the Thames rushing through your ears. A fascinating subject matter kept me engrossed, Alice’s attention to detail kept me guessing as to the culprit and short sharp chapters make this a definite “just one more chapter” kind of read!

    There are few authors I buy in hardback, but Kate Rhodes is one of them, and RIVER OF SOULS has to be her best book yet. I have followed the Alice Quentin series from the first, and Rhodes gets better and better. Her writing is immersive and lyrical – it is easy to see the poet in her – yet accessible. The story is tightly plotted and builds to a satisfying conclusion. The relationship between Alice Quentin and DCI Burns is twisting and turning nicely, rather like her books. The Thames is a character in itself in the book, chilling, mysterious, slow to give up its secrets, and I love how we get to see inside the mind of the killer. Excellent, cannot wait for the nest.

    The first Kate Rhodes book I read was ‘Hell Bay’ set in Cornwall, with a male detective. Very good - I recommend it to everyone. My first Alice Quentin ‘ Cross Bone Yard’ was every bit as good. Psychologist Alice works with Detectives and does their job for them. Her background is unusual and horrific- she and her brother both carry the scars. After reading this excellent book, I read Angels and then River ofSouls. They were good- but because I had read the others, I knew what was coming next. A bit like the children’s Mr Men, the stories were all the same but with different names for the perpetrators, a pity. Best I think to leave a year between reading each one

    London in a little village called Hatch End. It was the last stop on the underground, although it was above ground when the train reached it! My husband was in the USAF, and we were in England for three years. What horrifies me now, is that it has been 51 years this month since I returned to the States! I loved London, and my memories still miss it. What I enjoyed in the last book was that it took place in London, particularly on the Thames. The story was riveting. I enjoyed the first three books, also. Could not stop between them! Had to read one right after another! Now I'm sorry I was so greedy....no more to read by this author. Yet. I will keep checking!

    4.0 out of 5 stars Moody View of the Thames
    Reviewed in the United States on 23 March 2016
    I don't usually jump into the middle of a series, but since the early books didn't get stellar reviews, I decided to read this one based on the plot summary. Yes, it was gory, but given the story line, it wasn't over the top. I liked the main characters, Alice Quentin and Burns, and I thought their relationship added too the story. I particularly enjoyed the historic aspects of the Thames. I got a real feel for the river, snaking through London, and for the violence of the past associated with it. The author created the proper mood, and the tension built as the story unfolded. My one issue is that there were some grammatical errors that brought me up short and interrupted the flow of the prose. I, more than once, googled the correct grammar. 'If I was" was used instead of 'If I were" throughout the book which I found annoying. Depending on the plot of future books by Ms. Rhodes, I may or may not read them. This one, however, was worth my reading time.

    The characters keep raving about how brilliant she is at solving crimes. really? I have read three Quentin books and she hasn't figured out one of them. Unless you count finding the killer by getting herself snared by him or her after making poor decisions. This after going to bed with some guy the day she meets him. I think she need she needs her own psychologist. The plots are interesting and readable, but honestly, Alice seems none to bright to me
