- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 April 2015So having read all 5 of the Nick Smith books and thoroughly enjoyed them, it was with trepidation that I bought the prequel "Hard Life". For me prequels tend to be a big disappointment (don't even talk to me about Phantom Menace!) I honestly thought this would be a book to far and was convinced I wouldn't enjoy it. How wrong was I, the author obviously has a real affection for Nick and you see it in his writing. Nick is well fleshed out following him from his early Army days right through to when we meet him in "New World". In fact you could easily read this book before New World as they flow seamlessly into each other.
Again I enjoyed the fact the flu pandemic happened and we read about its after affects instead of the pandemic itself, to many books go to great lengths about how every one dies then run out of ideas 2 weeks later. The Nick Smith books feel very real to me with how "normal" people would cope with loss.
So buy this and then buy the series you wont be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 November 2014I absolutely enjoyed the "Nick Smith" series of books they took me away into a different world from our normal usual "work & TV life".
I wont give too much away but Nick Smith is Ex-SAS and helps a few survive after a major flu pandemic which is the main story line in Books 1 to 5 which left only 1% of the population alive in the UK and the violence and hardship that happened trying to just stay alive. If you have already read the previous 5 books in the "Nick Smith" series then Book 6 The Prequel: Hard Life is a must to read. Its about Nicks young life training for the SAS and his career and how he met Simon in the SAS taking you to the start of book 1. I have cried and also laughed in places while reading this series of books and learnt so much about survival and how our lives and world would change if a pandemic actually happened. Enjoy them all, I did! Well done Mr Stephen Birch I am looking forward to your next book.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2015It was good to know about events leading up to the series. I enjoyed every aspect of the book and would recommend it plus the rest of the series to anyone who likes a good adventure about one man's fight against the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Almost Life Story of a Young Man Who Joined the SAS
SB has written a novel about a young man who joined the SAS until he was framed for murder of two men from his own squad. He was sent to military prison where the Warden tried to have him killed. He escaped an d spent the next few years moving from wooded areas to other wooded areas. He stayed in hiding when the flu epidemic happened. This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER

Covered a lot of years in a short time. Interesting enough to make me want to read the series now.
