About the author

My name is Alex and I live in East Yorkshire, England with my husband of too many years to remember, two dogs and a psychotic parrot that hates me.
I was born in 1960 and grew up in the sixties and seventies. To all of you too young to remember those primitive times I can promise you that the things in my books are all true, it really was like that back then. Somehow we managed to live (and even enjoy ourselves) without mobile phones, laptops, iPads and all the rest. if you had tried to explain social media and the internet to us back then we would have thought you were mad. I cant say I wouldn't be lost without all those things nowadays but believe me, it was possible to live without it
Anyway, I hope you enjoy my books and find something in them to amuse you. i have been accused of making things up but i promise you, it's all true. i really was brought up in a family of nutters and oddballs.
Even if you find you don't like my sorry tales, I thank you for giving them a go anyway.
My books to date are:
Don't Look at Me in That tone of Voice
Don't Tell my Mum
Don't Blame Me, it's Everybody Else
Don't Know Where She Get's That From
Don't Get Me Started, We'll Be Here All Day
Dangerous Misunderstandings (Murder in a Paper Shop)

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 November 2014This is the final book about Alex's life and it didn't disappoint - it was as fantastic as the previous ones. It was like reliving my life all over again as I was a child of the 60's. Alex - you write with such wit and humour that I kept laughing out loud again and my husband didn't need to ask what I was reading. Thank you for sharing your life experiences with me and everyone else who has read your books. I think you need to write another one - even if you have to make it up! You are amazing!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 March 2017I enjoyed this little light hearted read. If you like easy to read pick up and down when you like kinda book you'll enjoy this. A few laughs thrown in along with a peek into life in the 70's.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 March 2018I have really enjoyed A!ex Cotton's books. I have read all four with great pleasure. Being a similar age to Alex and having my daughter at about the same time she had hers, lots of memories have been provoked. Like Alex I believe that the 70's was a great time to be a teenager. I have laughed out loud at some of her mishaps. Thank you Alex for a very enjoyable few hours.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 August 2020I’m gutted to come to the end of this series of books. I laughed at things I shouldn’t have and it was like the story of my life in places. So glad I accidentally came across these books.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2016Okay as previous book I enjoyed the read but not as funny as first 2,
This book however can you please explain WHY you didn't give your daughter a name throughout the entire book??? It's not as if your protecting the innocence of a young child after all or was she so delicate and important that this is to remain a huge secret...No..
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2015Just an ordinary story of an ordinary girl growing up, don't know why I enjoyed the book so much but I did. Maybe it's because many of the details will have been familiar to most ordinary people. A real touch of nostalgia with some humour thrown in.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2017I have laughed at her family memories as so many are the same as mine, s
Though my mum was very maternal but very dipsy.
I have read all four books in a week and enjoyed everyone. I'm just convinced that all Yorkshire folk born in the 60s and 70s will relate to her experiences.
A definite 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 January 2015Another super book from Alex. I think to be honest this book and the previous books on Alex's childhood will appeal to a reader of a certain age because all that she says is so reminiscent of our childhoods and perhaps a younger person would find difficulty in swallowing some of the tales she tells, but believe me they are true to life (in those far off days). Hope there are more memories to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just finished reading the entire series
I started the first book last week. Just finished reading the last book in the series. What a trip! I was born in 67 so I could easily relate to around the same time period give or take a few years. Everyone piling in the car, no seatbelts, the teachers, the clothing, the food and so on. We always got the belt back then in our family. I'd hear the familiar sound of the belt buckle and would start running. In school, we'd get a ruler on our knuckles. I could relate to just about everything and everyone. So many things we did and went through back then would be severely punished today. Yes, it was crazy back then and I wouldn't give up being a teenager during that time. Among the craziness and hardships we endured, there was always a feeling of excitement, learning, independence and freedom. We all grew up quick. I still shake my head thinking how different it is for families these days. Between the many laws and opportunities for your actions to be on social media, I breathe a sigh of relief that we grew up before it all. And the rest of the series takes you on a journey from the teenage years thru marriage, and kids and up until book 5 which I hope isn't the last. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. So fun reading about your journey!

5.0 out of 5 stars Need a laugh ? Do yourself a favor !
The author, Alex wraps up her family story in this book. I'm hoping one day she will resurface with adventures as a grandmother .
This book talks of her parenting years, having a new baby , going to school functions, and dealing with her zany parents and in laws who stay just as funny in this book as in the previous ones .
These 4 books were the funniest I've read in a long time. The author and I are almost the same age, so much of what she talked about was familiar to things at that time of my life .
Very good little books. all very short. I could read these stories again, but will save them for another time when I need a really good laugh again .
