About the author

Shawn E. Crapo was born in 1971 and raised in the boring city of Decatur, Illinois. From a young age, he immersed himself in the captivating worlds created by fantasy authors such as R. A. Salvatore, Terry Brooks, and J.R.R. Tolkien. These influential literary works ignited his imagination and kindled a lifelong passion for storytelling.
Driven by a deep-seated desire to craft his own fantasy series, Shawn embarked on a quest that spanned decades. Despite encountering numerous obstacles along the way, he persevered, never losing sight of his dream. Finally, in 2011, after years of dedicated effort, he triumphed over adversity and completed the first installment of the Dragon Chronicles.
However, the initial volume of the Dragon Chronicles took an unexpected turn, diverging from Shawn's original vision. Undeterred by this deviation, he embraced the change and allowed the story to flourish in its newfound direction. The book captivated readers and achieved remarkable success, catapulting Shawn into the ranks of esteemed indie fantasy authors.
Bolstered by this achievement, Shawn continued to expand the vivid universe he had created. He delved into the depths of his imagination and penned two prequel series, intricately interwoven with the Dragon Chronicles, each illuminating the rich tapestry of the fantastical realm he had forged.
Today, Shawn E. Crapo resides in the scenic Brown County, Indiana, where he continues to nurture his creativity. Alongside his writing endeavors, he explores other artistic passions, working as an acrylic painter, guitar tech, and CG artist. Through his multifaceted talents, he brings forth captivating tales and transports readers to extraordinary realms, enchanting them with his words and captivating their hearts and minds.
Shawn's unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of his dreams serve as an inspiration to aspiring authors and fantasy enthusiasts alike. With each new creation, he expands the boundaries of imagination and invites readers to embark on wondrous adventures within the realms of his imagination.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 December 2013This is a great introduction to the world of Dragons.
Fantasy worlds can be difficult for me to enjoy but I loved the characters in this story and how they each had a different strengths and styles. The book sets up the loyalties and friendships of the characters involved.
The story starts with an attack in the Northlands from something so powerful only the Onyx Dragon can save the people from certain destruction and goes on to set up the relationships between the new dragon king and his knight followers. The description of the lands and areas is excellent and detailed.
There were a couple of very touching moments that were beautifully written. The anger and pain felt by one of the warriors when his friends were slaughtered was tangible. I had to gulp back tears.
There wasn't much suspense in this tale but then there didn't need to be as this is just the beginning of what will be an adventure of epic proportions, the characters knew what had to be done and the got on and did it, that said, this is a full length book so even though it is only the beginning of the tale the story is complete leaving the reader satisfied but still wanting more.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 April 2013Not sure how anyone could give this 5* but each to their own. This just felt formulaic, near enough like here's a story just change the place names & characters & you have a winner! There is no suspense, plot twists well much of anything really.Near enough from the start of the book our hero,Eamon,we know he is going to be king,he's going to raise a band of knights,he's going to be the new dragon & basically he can't be beaten = suspense nil!I doubt very much if I could be bothered with the rest of the series, when it comes out, & very much doubt I will bother to read this a second time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page turner and a world you won't want to leave
Take the magical storytelling and mythical hopefulness of CS Lewis and combine it with the darker, battle-filled epic of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and you have Shawn E. Crapo. What a true storyteller emerging author Crapo proves himself to be with his first novel in the Dragon Chronicles series.
Crapo has the rare wonderful talent of weaving a timeless tale of good against evil, faith against apostasy, and all out statecraft and bloodied war in a beautiful page turner. My favorite talent of Crapo's is his effortless ability to create beautiful 'tiny moments', settings and scenery, little rooms and towers you won't want to leave behind. He also has the ability to pepper in these little pieces of character development such as singing battle songs while beheading the enemy that just brings his tale even more color.
Onxy Dragon is a page turner and a delight. Don't get me wrong, it's one bloody battle after another, all in the name of freedom and faith. Brotherhoods are forged as heads are chopped off. Crapo is a talent to be sure.
This novel would make a wonderful Christmas gift. Everyone loves a series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough, but not special.
My gut tells me that this book ought to be on the lower end of four stars, but the fact is that there is nothing particularly wrong with this book. In fact, compared to much of the self-published dreck that I find myself slogging through, this book really is five stars. Too bad I don't differ between traditionally published books and self-published books when I review. (Unless I can buy them with self-published money, and then that will change. Five stars for everybody!)
Editing is good. There are no major errors and very few minor errors. (Shear != Sheer) Minor capitalization issues.
The book itself is a quick read, full of action. The action scenes really ought to be more stirring, but they are just lacking . . . something. The writing lacks flair, but at the same time, it isn't annoying or bad. The characters are reasonably well developed and the plot is reasonably well thought out.
Takeaway: Decent but not exciting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed Book 2 in the series
Enjoyed the book overall. I liked the storyline and the characters and just the fantasy of it all....I really do like dragons. But like in Book 1, the word "lie" was used throughout the book when "lay" was appropriate and actually made more sense. Was surprised at the end of the book to find that there is apparantly another to follow as we were left hanging.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty well done...
This fantasy novel is fairly well-done, especially as a first time outing for the author. The writing style starts out a bit juvenile, but improves significantly through the course of the book. It would seem that the author perhaps started the work at an earlier point in his/her writing/younger age and when picked up later for conclusion, had grown in writing ability. Some few grammar or spelling mistakes (these things should be caught by editors, though, and they occur even in NYT bestselling titles. I am of the opinion that book editors are over-paid and under-skilled and the entire lot of them (those who miss stupid little errors, at least) should be sacked. I would offer my services at a fraction or half of the cost of these pretenders, and the works would be that much better for it. At the very least, I would mark the mistakes I detect, and if unsure whether I should just fix them myself, would at least do some research or make a few calls to English professors as well as the author to be sure.
Getting into the book and the story itself, it's not a masterwork, but is certainly capable and an enjoyable, quick read. I do detect a bit of anti-Islamic (actually more anti-jihadist) sentiment in the fact that the enemies are clearly meant to be Arabic, although misled from Allah's (in this case it's Ibram, I believe) peaceful origins of their religion to a bloodthirsty and savage being's corrupted version of their faith. This alternative look at religion shows promise for the author, and all in all the book achieves it's goal.
Would make a great video game or straight to video movie, much like Glenn Thater's saga about Lord Angle Theta, which begins with "Gateway to Nifleheim" (which would be even better as a game, as it's steeped in Nordic legend and lore).

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad First Effort
Not bad for a first effort. Kinda choppy and bit of a hodgepodge, but moves quickly. Grammatical errors, especially homonyms, are jarring. Looking forward to an improved second book.
