Le Boudin: The Demons of Camerone Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 40 ratings

A tale of courage, war, lust, defiance and honour, set against the backdrop of the most heroic last-stand action in military history. A Scotsman and his Irish friend, both of whom are on the run from Edinburgh, fleeing both justice and injustice, find themselves in Mexico as soldiers in France’s Foreign Legion, seeking redemption under arms. This is how history was made. A stirring, fast-paced, enthralling historical novel, with beautiful original artwork provided by May Yang, Martin Symmers, Chris Wainwright and John Colquhoun.”

Ian has spent most of his life in Livingston and Edinburgh. Severely disabled since the age of 24, he is a keen Hibs fan and military historian.

"I became an author almost by accident - something horrid happened to me and I was asked to write a memoir about it, so I did, and in the process realised that I still had good writing ability. That , coupled with going to university in my mid 20's, changed everything. I worked in warehousing for 8 years prior to becoming disabled and starting my literary career, I enjoyed warehousing, especially the banter and practical jokes, but don't really miss the job".

Ian cites a broad range of literary and other influences on his writing.

"These days I don't read as much as I perhaps should. I like Bernard Cornwell and Irvine Welsh's books, Cornwell's historical novels always have a great formula, while Irvine Welsh's books kept me reading when I was a younger man who would have been bored by anything else, but asides them, I only really read factual books now. Beau Geste by PC Wren, Culloden by John Prebble and The Four Feathers by AEW Mason were the books I read and loved as a child which gave me an interest in history. I'd also say that The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, Das Kapital, Leviathan, Lord Of The Rings, the Narnia series, Marcus Aurelius' Meditations and The Bible have been influential at various stages of my life."

A good fiction story based largely around a famous battle. kind of like scarrow or cornwell but more fast paced. great artwork. If you like military historical fiction, Edinburgh, or the foreign legion, you'll love this.

The action at Cameron's when less than 70 men of the French Foreign Legion battled against thousands of Mexicans has been unjustly neglected by English-speaking writers.
This is a valiant attempt to fill the gap. Sadly the action does not move to Mexico until more than half way through the book: the battle could have been given more detail.
I am,however, impressed and have also gone for another book (about the 1745 Jacobite uprising) by the same author.

Throughly enjoyed this book especially has I had no previous knowledge of the subject. As always the author continues to deliver, I look forward to reading his next book.

Was a little disappointed to discover the degree of fiction in this account. To be honest you're suspicions are prickling early on by the intimate knowledge of legionnaires pre-enlistment lives, up to and including their sex lives!

The story of the battle itself is stirring, and the details of Mexican history during this period were new to me. So an enjoyable read but not one that would have been my first choice on the subject if I'd known the amount of fiction involved tbh.

The writing style is naive almost childish at times and using two storytellers simultaneously can be confusing and unnecessarily complicated

Great read - starts slowly but turns into a rollercoaster of a story that grips you. Enjoyed the intertwining of historical fact & fiction & the descriptions of old Edinburgh as the journey of the two main characters begins. Loved how the author brought the foundation of his favourite football team into the story near the end & without giving away the ending the name of a building firm brought into the story's conclusion made me smile. A cracking yarn.

Being familiar with the battle and its figures found the novel interesting but pedantic. The description of Utah invasion intrusion seemed off.
