Mark discovers secret upon secret in his mysterious garden, and finds himself slowly but surely drawn back into the days of the Second World War, with its life and death struggle and sense of constant danger and excitement. Can he change the past? Can he obliterate, or save whole worlds? Is there buried gold bullion to be unearthed in his garden? What is the role of the ageing vamp, Emma, who enters his life? And Mary, his ex-wife, who re-enters his life at the same time? And, most poignantly of all, who is the beautiful, young woman he remembers meeting so many years ago at infant school who spoke to him of a time they would meet again? About the author

JUST OUT! LOVE AT WAR!
Alan Hardy is UK-based, and a director of an English language school for foreign students. He is married, with one daughter. He has now written fourteen novels. They have been described as surreal novels with plenty of comedy, satire, humour, romance, sex and adventure. They're shocking, original and respectful of nothing and nobody. You have been warned. He is also a poet (poetry pamphlets: Wasted Leaves, 1996; I Went With Her, 2007).
The thirteen published so far are LOVE AT WAR (just published), THE NAZI SPY, THE NAZI DOUBLE AGENT, THE CASE OF THE TATTOOED BUTTOCKS, THE CASE OF THE PINIONED BOSOMS, THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING CORPSES, THE CASE OF THE TORN YELLOW SOCKS, VAMPIRE HUNT, BRITT, GOOD QUEEN BETH, JULIA, GABRIELLA, and THROUGH THE GATES.
This is what Alan himself says about them:
THE NAZI SPY and THE NAZI DOUBLE AGENT (the first two books in THE NAZI SPY MYSTERY SERIES) follow the adventures of Fiona, a rich, spoilt Scottish landowner, now no longer in the full flush of youth, and Matthew Manfred, an officer in the Royal Air Force, handsome, alluring, and much, much younger than Fiona... Sparks fly, not just romantically, but against a thrilling, gripping background of treachery, spies, betrayal, and even a nation's survival as England faces potential catastrophe in the early years of WW2. There are enough twists and turns to keep you giddy as you hang on to the edge of your seat, trying to work out who is to be trusted, and who is on whose side, and who you should be rooting for...
THE CASE OF THE TATTOOED BUTTOCKS, the first book in THE INSPECTOR CULLOT MYSTERY SERIES, is a cheeky, exciting murder mystery, with plenty of thrills, surprises, witty repartee, suspense and sexy ladies, let alone a couple of gory murders. The story takes place in a country mansion, with an assembled array of suspects (a mixture of the rich, decadent, sophisticated and louche) who are all perhaps not quite what they seem and hiding God knows what secrets... Even the renowned Inspector Cullot, with his occasional fits of dark despair, and now working in a department store's lingerie section, is tormented by ghosts from his past... And does the bumbling, simple-minded PC Blunt, recording another Inspector Cullot case for posterity in an array of note-books, also have skeletons in his cupboard..? And do the unsolved Night-Club Hostess Murders committed two years earlier have a bearing on the case? And what about the strange tattoos on the buttocks of the gorgeous ladies assembled at the mansion? What does it all mean? You'll die laughing trying to find out.
THE CASE OF THE PINIONED BOSOMS is the second book in THE INSPECTOR CULLOT MYSTERY SERIES, and follows the hilarious and spell-binding antics of Cullot and his Team (Sergeant Watkins, PC Blunt and Cullot's gorgeous daughter, Stephanie) as they set out to nail the killer following two gruesome murders in a hotel in the Swiss Alps.
THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING CORPSES is Book 3 in the series. Who killed PC Blunt's gorgeous ex-wife, and is Inspector Cullot himself implicated in the baffling disappearance of dead bodies all over London? Another riotous, cheeky, gripping mystery...
THE CASE OF THE TORN YELLOW SOCKS is Book 4 in THE INSPECTOR CULLOT MYSTERY SERIES.
In VAMPIRE HUNT, Dr Joseph Aymon returns to Transylvania where he used to accompany the famous vampire-killer, Professor Van Helting, on his vampire hunts. Joseph is out to prove the existence of vampires; he can't wait to come face-to-face with the Undead. He also aims to find Bella, his one and only love, who disappeared years ago. Will he find redemption, his lost love, or plain, unadulterated horror?
THROUGH THE GATES is a time-travel novel, with the hero (or anti-hero) Mark travelling back to the days of World War Two. He lives in an old house with a big, mysterious garden where he keeps unearthing and discovering objects which draw him back into the past. He's also obsessed with a beautiful young woman he saw when very young, and his attraction towards the past, and journeys into it, are also an attempt to find her and discover who she was. Eventually he comes to feel that the future of the universe more or less depends upon him and his actions. It's a time-travel novel that's totally original and different from all others. Plus there's a fair bit of love interest, and sexual shenanigans as well...so action, romance, mystery, time-travel...it's a great mix. Not to mention the gold bullion buried somewhere in Mark's garden...
GOOD QUEEN BETH is a no-holds-barred savage attack on the monarchy, 'celebrity-bimbo-culture', and reality TV shows; it is totally non-PC in its attitude to the state of the nation, the monarchy, sex, women, anything and everything... Be prepared to be stimulated, shocked and appalled. It's quite raw in its depiction of sexual deviancy and perversion, but allies this with an exciting portrayal of a modern revolution, and, let me tell you, a great love-story between its main protagonists, Beth and Jason.
BRITT is set in France during World War One, and is a comic, exciting tale of derring-do, spies, aerial dog-fights...and sexual shenanigans...with officers, and ladies, of a dissolute disposition and sexually experienced swagger. Ahem! Need I say more? In contrast to this world of sexual abandon and experience, we have Wriggles of the Royal Flying Corps and Britt, his childhood sweetheart. Both are innocents in a world they don't understand, and can't relate to. Britt, in particular, is close to being mentally unhinged...and yet, with a devilishly cunning German spy ring about to escape with top-secret information that might well bring about England's defeat, they are England's only hope. Oh, and there's also a great love story that unfolds heartbreakingly between the two of them... Will they be able to save England, and find true love...? Or does death and madness await them in a world dominated by Germany and its depraved supporters?
I think GABRIELLA is a story that's been buzzing around in my head for years, and it demanded to be written down. Adolescent love (and teenage fascination with sex) is a pretty significant time and experience for us all. The idea of a love-story set around a school cricket match has its roots in an earlier pimply-faced version of me when at school and the scary, obsessive ideas that went through my adolescent head. When I sat down to write the story, it automatically turned into a bawdy, comical narration of a young man's faltering (though very sweaty) first experience of love and sex. But as well as being, I hope, a good, exciting read, I think GABRIELLA can also be seen as a critique of England's wretched class-ridden, monarchy-loving society. Check it out.
As well as his poetry, Alan is currently writing and revising other novels, including BOOK 5 in THE INSPECTOR CULLOT MYSTERY SERIES. Watch this space.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2014Through the Gates is the fourth Alan Hardy story I've read, and I have been truly taken by all of them. Alan is a fine writer, and his time-travel Through the Gates novel is a brilliant extension from his other stories. The main character, Mark, is digging furiously in his London garden while fantasising occasionally about a beautiful dark-haired teacher from his infant school. He is looking for valuable stolen bullion, but in the process he gets quite realistically diverted back in time to 1899 and 1944. Emma, an attractively seductive woman in her sixties appears in a red sports car. But is she Mark's mother or a former girlfriend?
Similar questions arise for Mark's attractive wife, Mary, and there is some fascinating confusion as love/lust intervenes. Likewise with the slightly blubbery Alec Gorman, who glimpses orgasmic interactions through a doorway crack. There is also some revealing wartime treachery via Tomlinson - a British Army officer who wants to let the Germans in on the date for an allied invasion at Normandy. This in turn has us glimpsing at Germans on our streets in the UK, which is worrying, but for real.
Hardy is an author who catches and holds one's interest in all of his stories. His time-travel Through the Gates is different from his other novels, but it bowled me over. I return frequently to his characters, and I am definitely looking forward to his next story.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2018A muddled, rambling and disjointed plot with no real progress or conclusion. Unnecessary and frequent sexual references which add nothing to what the author is trying to convey. I am at a loss to see how this has received so many highly rated reviews.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 April 2017This book is very difficult to fathom, the story jumps about in different ages and you are soon muddled to know where in history you are meant to be. The characters are difficult to place and at the same time it is difficult to put down the book because you think it must be leading somewhere, but unfortunately it doesn't. At the very end you realise the main character is imagining everything and is about to expire in a mental hospital.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2015OK, so mainly I found this book confusing. But I think that's probably the point. I was dragged through scene upon scene of here and then, without really knowing which direction I was going in.
The sex in this book is used as a weapon, and gets grotesque. Sorry.
The book is well written though. And I did feel compelled to keep reading to the end.
I half expected him to wake up in an asylum and discover it had all been some warped figment of his imagination.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 December 2015Through The Gates by Alan Hardy is a testament to the ingenious imagination of this great author. This time travel fantasy reminded me of Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court only this novel has so much more going for it. This is a mind-bending masterpiece of literary brilliance.
Mark is a troubled man. His life seems to be in limbo and it is. He has strong memories of an intriguing woman from long ago and years to find her. His home has its own secret past life during WWII and then there's the stash of gold his parents told him was buried in the garden by Dick Turpin. He digs into his past and travels back to WWII where he has all manner of adventures. Here the author expertly blends humor with more dark overtones to create a satisfyingly bizarre read.
I cannot recommend this extraordinary novel enough but I'll try my best. If you had a few hours left to live read this book, who knows you might beat death and travel back in time.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2014'Through the Gates' is the story of one man's journey back and forth through time as he struggles with his own memories. Is Mark really capable of altering the time-line, and will he ever find out who the dark-haired woman from his childhood really is?
As with Hardy's other books, this is a truly unique and memorable read. From the opening chapter, it captivates and pulls the reader into the world of a dysfunctional man who has a fascination with older women and believes that he is time-travelling to the time of the second world war.
I found this story fascinating, with all it's different layers threading together as it moved along. The question of Mark's sanity added a very interesting layer and I thought this was the most intriguing element to the story. The main character Mark was just brilliantly written which made this book a page-turner I couldn't put down.
Overall this is a unique and fascinating story. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 December 2014Through the Gates by Alan Hardy is a gripping time travel story with a sparkle of mystery and romance. The premise was very intriguing: the main character, Mike, found something in his garden that made him travel back to the world war. Mike found himself potentially capable of changing the history. But what would the effects be on his times?
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel thanks also to a pleasant narrative style and a very well portrayed characters.
It's not the first novel I read from Hardy's imaginative mind and I look forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars An original, imaginative time travel experience
If you are an Alan Hardy fan as I am, the first thing I can tell you is that although Through The Gates still has some of Hardy’s dry humor and hints of social rebellion, the language is a bit more poetic; a bit deeper in some ways than Hardy’s other books. It is a thinking person’s journey through time. Hardy’s entry into the time travel genre is fresh and original. Let me say it; it is much more imaginative than a time portal in the back of a diner (a bestseller by another fairly well known author).
As we read the story of the haunted main character Mark, you may find yourself asking the question, “Is he really traveling back in time or is he insane.” Well it may be a bit of both. The skilled hand of author Alan Hardy leaves it to the reader’s interpretation. You will have to decide for yourself. I think it is what you want it to be and that makes for fun, imaginative reading.
But the main thing is that it works wonderfully. In a sense, it is two stories in one. It is a time travel story where the adventurer travels back a little further in time, each time he travels back, where he sets events in motion that may alter history. His actions may actually alter his own existence. In fact, due to a unique chain reaction of events set off by the main character, the world may become a completely different and darker world.
Through The Gates is also a story that delves deep into the recesses of a disturbed mind. We can feel what it is like to be slipping away from reality. We can feel the confusion that Mark feels as he himself is not entirely sure if he is really traveling through time or if he is going insane.
Whether or not the main character is insane or if he is really traveling through time, it makes for a fascinating page turner. I highly recommend this exciting fantasy/journey back through the war years in Great Britain.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dont waste your time
I can't imagine an author or an editor etc starting a book with "The lady wriggled on the desk she perched daintly on" That was the first sentence and the first clue that I wouldn't make it past the second chapter. I didn't. I don't even remember what the "story" was about I was so distracted by the poor grammer, punctuation ,and sentence structure. . I can understand that some books are not originally written in English but please have the courtesy to have it translated properly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A head spinner of a story, enjoyed it!
I am a big fan of Alan Hardy and his witty sense of humor that is reflected in all his books. I look forward to the quirkiness. But this book took me completely by surprise. The only thing that this book has in common with the earlier ones that I’ve read is the connections with a World war torn England.
When I say that the book caught me by surprise, I mean a delightful and unexpected surprise. Time travel is a particularly favorite concept of mine and the author has written a delightful, suspenseful story on time travel that keeps you riveted.
Mark finds himself being drawn into the past and here is where the author has skillfully addressed a big question in my head about time travel. What happens when you come back? Mark keeps returning to a world that keeps shifting ever so slightly in the beginning and faster the further he travels back in time. Each character is interesting and believable and as the book unravels, the plot thickens.
This is one head spinner, which you will find difficult to put down. I did! An absolutely fantastic read Mr. Hardy!
