- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 January 2021This was a eerily hypnotic read.
It is a complex story that is more than a little strange with lots of action and twists in the storyline.
Loved the characters but like the story they are rather odd.
I couldn't put it down!
Highly recommended
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2016Awakened will certainly keep you engaged and looking for more.
It took me a little while to warm up to the story but something clicked and I found myself deep in to the story. It flows very well and the plot is very good. It kept me guessing and the ending surprised me a bit.
It's a really good apocalyptic vision and the lengths Ruby's mother would have gone to had she taken out other major world cities as well as Bombay would have been one heck of a tale.
Laxmi Hariharan's characters are rich and full of interesting backgrounds.
It was nice to be able to read a book with out predicting which character does what or the ending plot.
I would definitely recommend this to my friends and family. It's a very interesting insight into life in Bombay.
I really look forward to reading more of Laxmi Hariharan's books in the future.
Prepare to find it difficult to put this book down whilst you find out how things turn out.
A really well deserved 4.5stars.

To see what happens to each character.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 December 2016After reading the books Feral and Taken by Laxmi Hariharan, which I enjoyed. I was looking forward to finding out about Ruby. The story was good and I would recommend it, however I still feel there is much more to this character to find out about. This novel really centres on her relationship with her Mother and how Vik enters into her life. I felt that there was something I was missing with her letting Vik into her struggles. Did he know her before. Was he intentionally inserting himself into her life. Sign of a good book when it leaves you wanting to know more. I could almost see myself on the streets of Bombay, feeling and tasting the dust. I don't want to go into the story as I hate spoilers. Nethertheless I can say after being introduced to this new author (for me) I look forward to the rest of the series.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 July 2018Stunned by an occurrence that changed her life forever, Ruby must now come to terms with the fact that someone is out to get her. She’d like to say she doesn’t know why—but she does. Plagued by guilt from something that happened in the past, it seems Ruby is being punished for it. Now she must fight to stop injustices being carried out and keep everyone in the city safe from someone who is out to do them harm. She teams up with a cop who makes her feel things she’s never felt before—which makes it difficult sometimes to concentrate on the task at hand. But together they bring justice to the city, and Ruby vows to take care of it until her dying day.
A brilliant story that had me gripped from start to finish!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 February 2017It was really hard for me to read this book.
It's because of the connection Ruby has with her mother, and also because of the one I have with my mother.
Too many similarities.
Fortunately my life is a lot less aggressive, and she is in a safe place on medication. Also I don't have as much scars, but do want a tattoo, even though hers wasn't voluntary. Maybe a lightning tree kind? But without the electrocution :-).
I put the book away several times, but made myself finish it.
Don't want to let myself be ruled by emotions.
Great ending though, it ended with a bang, or rather a tsunami!
Just really relieved right now.
Good read, but too heavy to read twice, for me that is.
Hopefully you have a better relationship with your mother.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 November 2014What do I think about Many Lives of Ruby Iyer? I think that it is a fun read, there was never a dull moment. The level of creativity in making Ruby’s life hard is pretty high, but the characters need a little bit of growing up, which I would hopefully see in the second book: Second Life of Ruby Iyer. I was not fooled the moment Dr Braganza appeared, as if the author had wanted us to know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Many Lives Series
This is the beginning of the Many Lives Series. We meet Ruby Iyer and Vikram (Vik) a policeman. A intriguing, gripping suspense YA thriller with a touch of supernatural that is thoroughly unpredictable & the story flows through smoothly & without distortion. A well crafted storyline with well detailed and vivid world building settings. A unparalleled writing style that captures character's essence, vivid descriptions of Mumbai, a dystopian world in Bombay, a melting pot of elements, a plot brimming with the heat of the sun, the terror & the love portrayed throughout the book. I highly recommend reading this book & the entire series as it's a magical read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique&Thrilling! A must read!
AWAKENED is the first full length I've read by this Author. I became a fan when reading a shorter work, so I was not surprised to find that Laxmi Hariharan is truly a gifted writer! I was drawn in immediately into the story, and became quickly invested in the character of Ruby with her inner battle to conquer the fears and negativity that rises in seeing what has happened to her city. Plus her attempts of overcoming the rejection from her parent, all bundled into a resolution and strength to succeed on her own!
The story is set in the fascinating dystopian world of Bombay, the description, which I had a taste of in a previous work of Ms. Hariharan's was simply incredible! The detailing of the crumbling city that still showed the sparkle of its former glory of glamour was lush and so keen, I felt as if I could see, taste, smell what Ruby could see, taste and smell!
The story follows Ruby after healing from an incident searching for her best friend Pankaj who is kidnapped. Ruby is assisted by the very handsome Vikram who ignites feelings within Ruby that surprises her. They both race against time as an evil posed by Dr. Braganza is revealed and from there the story amps up three-fold, as they seek to stop the Dr. and save both Pankaj and her city!
Well written, lush descriptions and fast paced flowing plot, The Many Lives of Ruby Iyer brings a fresh voice to the dystopian genre!
I fully recommend to those who enjoy action and adventure with a touch of suspense!
Appropriate for all ages, I look forward to reading the next! I count this as a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Action and adventure, emotionally charged
Awakened - Laxmi Hariharan
So many twists and surprises in an action- packed yet deeply emotional story about a young woman caught up in a stream of life that may or may not be something fated...
In an internal struggle against a childhood survived under a seemingly uncaring yet particularly domineering mother, the life of the protagonist is a roller coaster ride between the emotional charge of trying to be independent yet wishing to be able to believe in (and maybe to trust, to love) someone, at least one person. Up to the last page the surprises are hard to second guess, and keep the reader right on the edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
Fast action adventure.
How much punishment can a girl take?
Thrown on to live wire, shot and running for her live as the baddies
keep coming for her again and again.
And what about the cop Vik, he is always there saving Ruby from one disaster after another. If you like action, you'll love this book.👍
