About the Author
Emma Hannigan was the beloved and bestselling author of thirteen novels, including the No.1 bestseller Letters to My Daughters.
Her bestselling memoir Talk to the Headscarf was updated and revised as All To Live For: Fighting Cancer. Finding Hope.
In 2007 Emma was diagnosed with breast cancer and her eleven-year battle with cancer began. As an ambassador for Breast Cancer Ireland Emma worked to dispel the fears around cancer and spread hope about new treatments. In February 2018 Emma shared that her team of dedicated doctors had exhausted all avenues in terms of her treatment. She launched a social media campaign #HelpEmmaHelpOthers to raise €100,000 for Breast Cancer Ireland. Two weeks later, shortly before her death, Emma's target had been reached. In the final months of her life, Emma completed her thirteenth novel, The Gift of Friends, sending her acknowledgements to her editor just days before she passed away.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 September 2015Good book and you warm to the characters and it made me cry in parts. However, there are some inaccuracies with the dates. Hannah was writing the letters in 1938 and that was the year that Clara was born, however, Clara said she got married in 1954 when she was 18, that would mean she was born in 1936, before the letters started. The book also refers to Ava being in her forties but Clara says Ava was born soon after she got married which would make Ava nearly 60. It also refers to Clara having just turned 80 which would mean she was born in 1935. Shame because that spoilt what could otherwise have been a great read and would have scored five stars

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 January 2016In this book, the author managed to successfully capture family dynamics and the interaction between the generations. I think it was well written and I didn't dislike the book, but I did find it a bit frustrating. I agree with one of the other reviewers when they said that a lot of the secrets and problems should never have happened, had the different characters taken the trouble to talk things through. I didn't think that the various secrets (not wanting to add any plot spoilers here) were even that drastic. On the whole it wasn't a particularly uplifting story, there was an awful lot of sadness and loss. However, I think the author manages to draw some good characterization and the story kept my attention, but there is just a small 'but' there for me, that makes me feel that something was missing.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 March 2019I absolutely enjoyed this book and as ususl I found it very hard to put down. Having recently lost my best friend I could relate entirely.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 August 2016Family breakdowns - close to my own experience! My ending didn't come together as well as that of the characters in this work of fiction.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2016Was great read as usual, I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. I loved the story line and twists in the plot and in the lives of the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story
Emma is a wonderful writer. This book is in my view her best. It was difficult to put down. The depth of feeling Emma has portrayed is palpable. The story is sad, happy, compelling and An easy to read. The family connections are wonderful Emma has a natural ability to bring all aspects of the family history into the story in a magic way and an exact recall of past sufferings during Hitlers time that compels you to read on. The story recalls the horrid past, a new beginning and a gathering of a family to the present. I had tears at times. Highly recommend this read.

2.0 out of 5 stars I am very disappointed that I can not play on my car tape ...
I expected a CD to be listened to on regular tape deck and not MP3. and because of that I give only 2 stars.
It was not clear when ordering that I require MP3 apparatus . I am very disappointed that I can not play on my car tape deck.
