Ruin : Book 1 of 5 Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 364 ratings

Ruin is a Carnificem, created to judge and execute. Isadore is a female human, seemingly created to get in his way.

Ruin wakes up in a swamp with no memory other than his need to judge and execute. The first person he meets is a scientist named Isadore who tries to help him remember why or what he's doing there.

Without realizing, Ruin imprints on her and forms a bond that makes them inseparable--literally. Now when he's sent on assignments to judge and execute, he gets to bring his all-knowing brain-scientist that's compelled to second-guess every job he performs.

But habits she considers harmless--namely those little white lies--are piling up and provoking the hellfire in his blood to judge her. And while he loathes her imperfections with all his being, if anything happens to her, Ruin's rage could destroy the world.

I’m a husband, father, and author privileged to live next door to the Atchafalaya Swamp Basin in Louisiana. I love good food and passing a good time and I also love writing realistic love stories with plenty of passion.

When I'm not writing, I'm helping the wife with the endless job of raising our six kids and homesteading on our three acres of heaven on the bayou.

I am a new fan of Lucian's writing , after reading his Bones Brothers series I couldn't wait to read more. I have read a few paranormal books but Ruin completely blew me away, So Ruin is a mysterious HOT stranger and Isadore is a freaky scientist , they come together in the swamps of Louisianna. Isadore helps Ruin discover who he is and in turn Ruin trys to help Isadore unlock her past, events unfold in a way you can not see coming, I love the way these characters interact , funny , sexy, hot , and totally addictive. Mr Bane is now one of my fav authors. I would defo recomnend this series ,definate 5 stars read.

Who wouldn't want a man like ruin? A hot guy who CAN'T lie! May be a little judgemental lol. An amazing story that has your mind on autopilot reading every word and wanting more

Let me start with the positive points. Lucian Bane is a talented writer and I can not fault his style of writing. He is both descriptive and fluid and you get a real sense of the scene he setting with his flow of words.
I found the premise of the story intriguing and this could be a fantastic book but I also found it disjointed with too much happening all at once, from bait wars, to a ex trying to assault her, from Stacy to the wise old man with the deaf son too much seemed to be going on which had no real relevance in the story (perhaps books 2-4 will expand on them). Isadore came across less genius scientist and more neurotic and moody. Her Faith lets her help this stranger but she seems to be more sexually frustrated and resentful than and actual heroine or love interest. I hope the next three books clear up this ramble of storylines into a solid, three dimensional book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Bane gold mine
Reviewed in the United States on 29 December 2024
I have been reading through Lucian Bane's books for several years now, and while I am currently passionately hooked on his Bayou Bishop series, in between the next new book, I read his other series. This is a new type of book. I do love the complexities of his characters, sometimes you wonder how one man has such a gold mine, in his head? So many amazing books and I loved them all so far. Some more than others. I loved this story, but I need to get to the next one quickly. That's how it always works with his stories. You get hooked, then you need the next book. Like a beautiful nourishment for your soul. I highly recommend this, and any book NY this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG, Talk about Delayed Gratification!
Reviewed in the United States on 5 September 2014
I am very picky about what paranormal I read. But, I like this author so I gave this one a try and was not disappointed. But, you can tell he is a Dom that believes in delayed gratification. Yeah, I'm married to a guy like that too. It may be sweeter later but until then it is pure torture and that is what the cliffhanger feels like right now.

Isadore, is a smart intelligent scientist that has moved back to her home in Louisiana out in the swamps that was left to her by her father after his passing. She is beautiful, sexy and a Christian, but no saint, she even has a trashy little mouth on her and fights her sexual needs daily.

Ruin, a long-haired, tatted, tanned, sexy-built man helps her out of a sticky situation and then flees, but she is puzzled by some words he mutters before fleeing. Later he comes back to her house asking for help. Finding out he doesn't remember certain things about himself, she is determined to help him in his quest to learn things and figure out who he is and what he is suppose to be doing. Here is where the fun, laughs, sensual nature, damnation and questioning of God takes place. Finding out who and what he is, Ruin and Isadore are on a quest to fulfill his destiny, but in the process feelings become involved and Ruin and Isadore have to figure out how to handle those as well.

I loved this story. I am looking forward to the next installment in this storyline. I said in a previous review of one of his books that I enjoyed watching this author grow and improve and that he could write anything and his writing is good and imaginative. The only reason this is not a 5 star rating is editing. It was rushed. Words were missing and in a couple of places it suddenly changed from third person to first person for one or two sentences then back to third person.

I love his writing style, his imagination, his comic relief, his descriptive interpretation, but I think he need not worry so much about getting these books out so quickly and make sure they are edited as best as they can be. We fans will still be here waiting for his books a few extra days. Having said all of that, this book is still worth a read. I am sure the author will correct these errors in an upcoming update. The story is good and I like that he branched out in another genre to test his wings as a writer. Kudos, Lucian Bane, for taking a chance in a new world of writing. You did well. I know the next installment will be even better, because you always up your game when you write. 4.5 Stars KCW

I am a big fan of LB so far. His writing style, pace of the stories, the characters, and humor make for an entertaining read. When this book started, I was a bit lost to the point of questioning my purchase. However, it did evolve and the humor was present. I did feel like the character of Isabella was confusing, as someone who is highly educated May choose to curse like a sailor, however I didn't expect her to be such a walking contradiction and turn into a Bible thumper after one visit to Sunday Service. I also thought that the insertion of characters without a background, explanation, or development had me spinning just a bit.

Overall I have to call it a cute story. It is sweet, humorous, very hot at times, and I did enjoy the debate over semantics as it was a very intelligent presentation without sounding atheistic. It did need some polish with the story itself as well as the typos that caused me to pause and Re-read in order to ascertain the actual message.

Overall I think Lucian Bane has another good series. The first book for The DW series also started out rough but it did improve tenfold as he went on. When is the next one coming out?

5.0 out of 5 stars *****New genre for Lucian Bane to enrapture his readers with!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 2 September 2014
I have previously read only two paranormal books, and I was not thrilled with the genre because I found it hard to relate to characters with unearthly abilities. So why did I choose to read this book? There is one simple answer, Lucian Bane wrote it. Although I was not 'on board' initially when Lucian stated he wanted his next series after Dom Wars to contain paranormal elements, I was willing to give this book a chance. I believe that Lucian is a master writer who incorporates sophisticated use of language, a unique story line, well-developed characters and a good dose of campy humor in his books. My expectations for those qualities to be present in a new genre were definitely met in Ruin: The Waking!

The story opens with a description of Isadore, a self-sufficient, quirky neuroscientist from Boston, who is living in a home that she has inherited in the swamps of Louisiana. It seems to be a good place to hide from a crazy ex. Her life pretty much consists of obsessively mopping her floors with Pine Sol, tending to her crawfish traps, and helping her neighbors. Isadore is lovable from the first paragraph of the story. Events take place that lead Ruin, an unworldly but beautiful specimen of a man, to enter Isadore's life. Although apprehensive, she agrees to help Ruin learn the basics of living in a mortal world, including mastering the language, which proves to be quite hilarious at times! Fire and ice are the key components of their relationship, both literally and figuratively. As Ruin discovers his destiny of being a judge and executor of wicked humans, Isadore finds herself drawn to him and yet she consistently challenges him at every turn, something Ruin finds himself attracted to, but shared sexual desires become complicated by morality.

Mr. Bane has drawn me into this story deeply, but has left me with so many unanswered questions. While I was reading, I kept looking at the number of pages left to read, hoping desperately that it would not end before my questions were answered. I was in no way ready for the "to be continued" that appeared. I do, however, highly recommend this book to all readers, regardless of whether or not you like paranormal. And, Lucian, please don't make us wait too long for the next part of Ruin and Isadore's story!
