About the author

Now being three quarters of my way through my third twelve-year career - the first one serving in the Royal Air Force, then running my own business as a driving instructor, and now working for Vivacity driving the mobile library - I decided it was time for me to put pen to paper and get the book out of me that apparently everyone has in them.
I write in the military thriller genre, releasing my first book, Scavenger Hunt, back in 2012, as well as the supernatural genre. Since then I have had two more children that keep me very busy and fit.
Have a look at my web site: barrybuckinghambooks.com for the other books I have written.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 October 2014This first book in the Dave Roberts trilogy had me hooked from the beginning. It is a classic of the Jack Reacher-esque genre, but with a British military focus which is pithier and more contemporary in the context of the current geopolitical climate. There are a few editorial corners that need fixing, but these do not detract from the overall effect of this compelling page-turner. I also liked the less formulaic approach that Lee Child would have taken with regard to the hero's dalliances with unfeasible pretty transient characters. There is a bit of sexual tension, but it is subtly done and not always about our main character, the enigmatic Dave Roberts. I look forward to book 2 and getting to know our character a little better. Well done Barry for a great debut novel, you definitely have the storyteller's gift.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 December 2017I read this book in three days and found it to be enjoyable, albeit somewhat tongue-in-cheek, in the speed of the action.
Apart from a number of spelling and grammar mistakes in the reading of the story I found it a good read and found the mistakes above to be tolerable.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 December 2014If I could I would give this 3.5 stars. I enjoyed reading the book. It was an interesting story and had some really good plotting points. Where it fell down for me was the feeling that it had been written in discreet chunks at different times to tick of plot ideas from a list and that these chunks had been assembled into a text without revision so that the narrative did not flow smoothly. Ebooks which are self published or put online with small organisations that do not edit the text often suffer from typos and spelling errors and if they grate on the reader's sensibilities it distracts from the story. If your mates say it is brilliant that is one thing but your true friend is the person who points out the slips and jaggy bits and gets you, as author, to do a bit of polishing.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2015An easy read. Plot okay, but not well written. Spelling and grammatical mistakes aside, the characters had no depth and I really couldn't give a toss about what happened to them.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 June 2017I like trying to find books I haven't read in the hope that I will occasionally find a self published novel that is not littered with avoidable errors. Sadly this is not one of them. Badly in need of some ruthless editing it would also benefit from simple proof reading to reduce spelling, punctuation and grammar errors. So distracting to this reader I regretfully abandoned the book about a third of the way through. The overall style was also not to my taste with a rather juvenile over use of the exclamation mark that gave a tiresome 'boys book' feel to the read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 January 2015First book I've read of the spin off Gulf wars, Iraq, Islamic stuff situation. A real rock and roll fast moving affair. I enjoyed every page and all the authentic action. Terrific book!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 September 2014I enjoy trying new authors and this is the type of action adventure stories that I like.
The story is well paced with some nice twists and turns that kept me turning the pages to the very end.
I would certainly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 January 2015A reasonable read that could have been so much better.
The storyline is good but there is so much going on that it stretches the imagination a little.
The dialogue needs some attention and editing with proof reading would have improved the book.
Not a bad first book and hopefully the author has gained some confidence which will result in a better next book.
The author does know his subject and now needs to improve his penmanship.
I might read his next effort but not straight away; I need time to further reflect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review
Very good read. Being an American I had look up a few purses but other than that it was a good read with the action moving at a brisk pace. I look forward reading more from this author. I am a writer of very limited ability and found this highly entertaining. Thank you .....James Avery

4.0 out of 5 stars Great storyline premise!
Author's work came across well! Story grounded on reality well! A good evening's read! Believable! As you can tell exclamation mark punctuation tiring and excessive!!!!! 1star loss for wearing me out..

3.0 out of 5 stars A great story - but
This was really a great story, great plot, and well written. But, do you know what ruins it? All the stupid typos and lack of editing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good but not great
While "Scavenger Hunt" has some excellent moments and was entertaining for the most part, the books lacks true emotion. The characters handle tragedy a bit too well and shake off trauma and injuries a bit too quickly. In spite of this the book is a good read and I will probably read more by this author.
