- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 September 2014A great action packed adventure which kept its momentum from cover to cover. The excellent description made you feel that you were really in Tibet
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 September 2016A very enjoyable adventure story. Had a little rte rouble following the change of scene early on but I stuck with it & was pleased I did. The author has done his research very well. Engaging characters & a fast moving plot with exciting ending.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 January 2017I enjoyed reading this book. It's a real page turner. The book has a very authentic feel, in the descriptions of soldiering and of the Tibetan landscape and culture. I found some of the scenes upsetting, but then the subject matter of the Chinese invasion of Tibet is upsetting. Where Robertshaw writes about something that I know about (like his description of Samye Ling) I can confirm the accuracy of his descriptions. This made me trust him as a writer. I would have given this book 5 stars, but it was a bit too much about soldiering for me. However I would recommend it to anyone interested in Tibet.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 June 2016Smith's journey grips from the outset as he leads a band of Tibetan rebels, still intent on resisting the Chinese. Alan Robertshaw gives us a vivid account of the beautiful and rugged landscape as well as a compelling account of the warriors defending their cause. Smith is prepared to risk all for the people and culture he loves. But things take a different turn when he realises it's not just the Chinese out to get him.
This tale will engage and intrigue you - a very good read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 February 2015A very atmospheric novel as you're immersed in the time and place (1970s Tibet) from start to finish. This adventure story is fast paced and battle scenes are so realistic you're confident the author has experienced similar himself. Characters are well delineated and believable and you'll find yourself willing the 'hero' to succeed in spite of the odds. A very enjoyable read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 July 2014The Unknown Soldier has everything you could want from a well-written adventure novel - suspense, danger and action straight off the pages of a `boy's-own' story, but with so much more to commend it: three dimensional characters you actually care about, complex relationships, beautifully descriptive prose and a setting that tells its own story on so many levels. All this is coupled with a level of detail and accuracy that only comes with knowing your subject backwards. All of this makes for a truly enjoyable, exciting and inspiring read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 November 2014I’d endorse everything Discoverer has written. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I bought it from Amazon to read on my phone and was therefore reading the Kindle version.
It’s a fast paced novel set in Tibet in the early 1970’s. In general the book follows the adventures of the main protagonist, an ex-soldier, and the genre might be called ‘combat fiction’ if there is such a thing.
The book is very light and readable. It’s ideal for those who are short of time as it is divided into very short chapters! The reader is quickly drawn in and the story races along. It’s very well-written. Each scene is vividly described and the plot, events and dialogue are thoroughly entertaining and engaging.
Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read
A rip roaring adventure with some interesting history thrown in.
Fast paced storyline, interlaced with keen knowledge of all things military, weaponry, Asian cultures and geography.
