With The Whisper of Stars, Nick Jones has combined detective, espionage and near-future dystopian thriller genres to produce a cracking story that is both compelling and makes you think about the challenges we face in the future.

With Earth's resources dwindling, the UN has taken control, forcing large parts of the world's population to go into hibernation - sleeping one year on, one year off. Jennifer Logan is part of the Duality Division, ensuring people go into hibernation at their allotted time, but after a failed mission, old memories are awakened leading her to embark on a quest for the truth about what happened to her father many years before, a quest that has her questioning everything she knows about her life and the world she lives in.
This really is a great read. Each chapter draws you into the world Jones has created, one that is both futuristic and very, very real, with neural implants rubbing shoulders with a night down the pub with friends. As the story progresses Jones gradually reveals a dark vision of the future, where those in power are forced to make difficult decisions which in turn become further corrupted by the desire to manipulate and control.
All this on its own would make an interesting read but it's with the character of Jennifer Logan that this book stands out. This is a strong, non-nonsense female lead who just doesn't give up, using her own skills and ingenuity to overcome anything in her path. Once the search for the truth starts, Jones successfully ratchets up the tension chapter after chapter and I found myself staying up late just to reach the satisfying climax that sets up book 2 very nicely. If you like near-future thrillers, then you should read this book. Highly recommended.

What a treat it was to get my hands upon a good SF yarn for adults, rather than those intended for so-called young adults!

The heroine is a female cop Jen Logan whose job it is prevent and track down illegal cloning and body swapping in efforts to beat death and ageing in a not-so distant dystopic future, where due to over population most good citizens are now required to report to hibernation centres yearly, to spend alternate years asleep - and on the facevof it with no harm commg to them whilst within this mandatory state of suspended animation...

I did wonder about the chpice of name for the main protagonist, Logan. For as the hunter she on turn is to become the hunted. The name may be referential with the writer raising a hat to another protagonist in another dystopia where it became necessary to Run......

That did not deflect at all from my enjoyment of this yarn and in any case It Is More Complicated. It seems that this Logan's father had vanished from his daughter's life only to bequeathed secret: a secret which many powerful and unscrupulous forces ate determined to get their hands on......

Jen Logan is to find that none of hervmentors or father figures are to be trusted as she embarks on a dangerous journey to get at tje truth in a cyber world where mass surveillance has reached levels of sophistication never dreamt of by Orwell.......

She finds an ally in Hacker Nathan, who would have been hunted down in her formal life as a police officer, as he too has borrowed a body not originally his pwn.

Jen Logan is tough, brave, resourceful amd a formidable fighter. But will that be enough?

The answer may only be revealed in future sequels - as perhsps too will be the nature of the secret Logan has discoveted, alongside its purpose.

Not sure where the whispering stars come in here the action is set firmly on Earth. But it is tightly paced with lots of twists in the telling and should certainly make for decent enough entertainment. The ending may be disappointing as it seems this first in the series is designed to be a teaser. I felt ever so slightly cheated by that, preferring that each story should be relatively complete in itself, though if Jen Kogan has hooked you, rest assured that there is more to come....

Let me whisper something to you: This novel is terrific.

This book surprised me, for it was so much better quality than I was expecting. The author may be unpublished (in the traditional sense) but he is definitely skilled and unlike many self-published works, this book does not read like one that could use the careful eye of an experienced editor, such was the quality of the writing.

The story gripped me pretty much from the opening chapter, the characters are interesting, and the concept is really fantastic and quite believable as a possible future for humanity.

I can see this book being categorised as science fiction, to me it's more future fiction and is definitely worth a read, especially as it's free. I will be eagerly anticipating the sequel to what is a marvellous first novel.

The good bits - a great story, good writing, great characters and good ideas. The annoying bit - although not totally a cliffhanger, it is obviously NOT the end of the story and the reader would need to buy the next book. I have looked at the next book, and found both books were published in 2014. However, the reviews indicate that there should be a third book and it is now 2022, so why would I invest in the second book only to still find the story incomplete? Totally frustrating, as a reader I don't insist on immediate gratification but without the end of the series in sight, so far as I can see, why would I invest in the next book only to be once again frustrated? Such a shame, I was going to write a glowing review!

Overall I found this a frustrating read. The writing was good and the plot was reasonably good, although not always convincing. It ended in a nail-biting climax but one that was not completely believable. The hurdle for the heroine was too extreme to be realistic. But the worst part was the ending – or rather lack of ending. I don’t mind a book series where the story continues providing that there is a reasonable ending to each part, but this story had no clear ending, it just set up the situation for the continuation. So overall I think a 3 star rating is the right compromise between the good and bad elements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling Fast-Paced Futuristic Thriller That Is Hard To Escape!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 8 October 2014
Futuristic time of 2091 and the place is London, England where cloning is illegal and body swapping is real. People desire immortality but to avoid overpopulation the only choice is the UN zone of hibernation. The choice is still the peoples of what cycle alpha or beta year. But if you didn’t make a choice when it was your time a choice would be made for you. Sergeant Jen Logan is an officer of Duality-the government enforcing hibernation. But now Peter Callahan a consult for Duality, who works with the minds of body swapping and hibernation, has discovered hibernators’ minds have search echoes or mind searching. This breaks all government laws and the guarantee to the people that this would not happen. Jen allows him to scan her believing it would prove Peter was wrong. But not only does he find search echoes but a memory that has just unlocked itself adding to a dream of her father that plaques her sleep…

Jones writes a compelling fast-paced futuristic thriller that is hard to escape. With what seems like two storylines brings two unlikely characters together. Jen Logan is a powerful, strong character determined to fulfill her duty to the Duality until her belief in them is shattered and Callahan goes missing as memories unlock sending her on a quest for the truth. Nathan O’Brien is a quiet, reserved man leading a simple life until his world collapses when his wife Katherine is murdered and the story is a mugging gone wrong. Which would be easy to accept except Katherine was an investigative journalist hot on the trail of something big. All this sets Nathan on a quest to finish what his wife started and seek revenge for her death.

I really couldn’t get enough of this storyline and the characters are so in-depth and real making this sci-fi amazingly real on so many levels. Jones’ writing is deep and powerful that would compete with any of the great futuristic thriller authors. A must read as truly an outstanding debut novel that will take readers by surprise.

I found this book quite by accident on twitter when using a hashtag for free kindle books. I liked the description so I downloaded it. The story sucked me in from the beginning and held me right to the last page. It's well written and plotted and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who loves good dystopian science fiction.

Loved the book. I was hooked from the beginning and finished in one weekend. Nick Jones is telling a original story (I not going to say more about the story .because you can read that in the book description) with likeable characters. I only missed a little humor.
