Product description

About the Author

Andrew Kain joined 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment – 2 Para – in 1973. Five years later, he passed SAS Selection, going on to spend the next eleven years as a Special Forces soldier. He saw active service in theatres as diverse as the Falklands, Northern Ireland and Middle East; he was an instructor on the SAS counter-terrorist team and also worked with other government and law-enforcement agencies, developing specialist techniques still in use today. After leaving the Special Air Service, Andrew worked as a security consultant and later founded AKE Ltd in 1991, providing security services and advice based on SAS methods to clients ranging from small NGOs to industrial giants. In 1993 he designed and delivered the world’s first Safety in Hostile Regions course for journalists operating in war zones. The SHR course celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2013 and has grown to become the benchmark for training that has now become mandatory for the industry. In 1996, the SHR (Surviving Hostile Regions) course proved its worth when video footage in Zaire captured a correspondent from TV4 Sweden saving his colleague’s life under gunfire. In 1998, Andrew was able to demonstrate to specialists within the insurance industry that training could diminish the risk to people operating in high-risk environments and war zones. In the same year, he began working with insurers from the floor of Lloyd’s delivering political risk intelligence. He also designed and delivered the first safety course for journalists operating in war zones delivered on behalf of BBC World Service and The Freedom Forum to Albanian journalists in Tirana just prior to the Kosovo war, and trained Radio B292’s Serbian journalists in Montenegro under the noses of Milosovic’s Serbian military. In the immediate aftermath of the NATO Kosovo campaign, Andrew and AKE took the lead – and were successful – in tracking down and safely returning two engineers who had gone missing. From 9/11 and its aftermath, which saw Andrew and AKE supporting CNN in Tora Bora, Afghanistan in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, right up until today, he has demonstrated that the basic principles set out in this handbook, developed with their foundations in the SAS, do work and can save lives.

I had this book in the mid 90's and it cost around £22.00 from W.H.Smith.
This book is Brilliant and provided me with the knowledge to keep myself and my family safe and secure. Everything in the book is easy to understand and makes perfect sense. I lent the book to a friend and never got it back after loosing contact with him when he moved away. Over the years the basic methods I learnt from reading the book probably saved my life and/or kept me safe on a number of occasions. 25 years on and now with two teenage children I decided to search for the book, since I believe it would equip them with the mental tools to keep them safe and secure as they prepare to go out into the big wide ugly and dangerous world. With easy straightforward tips and informative advice, this book is a great read and will provide you with the knowledge you or your teenage children would absolutely benifit from as you go about day to day life. I found the 'Security on the street' & Security in your car, and security while abroad, chapters to be very very helpful indeed, and with todays crime ridden societies and cyber crime climate, the chapters about security in the home & office come in very handy too. 10 out of 10, I would recommend this book to anyone.

An excellent book, Mine was signed by Andrew Kain (loose-leaf edition) back in October 1996 and I've just bought the Kindle Version so as not to use the Loose-leaf any more as, if you have the yellow hardcover loose-leaf version, it's selling by more than one company nowadays for £399.00. :-)

The book is full of common sense on how to protect yourself at home, in your car, in the street, when travelling, abroad and more. Touch wood my home is secure enough not to have been burgled yet - touch wood - and although 77, still feel safe to walk the streets in London..

I just cannot believe that people can try to prevent others from being safe by giving this book less than five stars. It might discourage people who really need it. I'm an ex security man (Paris, over 50 years ago) and I found it still extremely useful.

This is an excellent book, clearly written, full of useful advice and spiced with anecdotes and illustrative examples from Kain's own time in the special forces. But the book is grounded in everyday life. Kain shows how a lot of security is common sense rather than rocket science and how a few simple precautions can make both people and property so much more secure. Much of the value of the book lies in Kain's ability to use a lifetime of experience in the security industry to suggest measures that are not only easy to apply but seem so obvious once he has mentioned them that they rapidly become part of one's daily life -- but which would never have occurred to most people unless they read his book.

Covers some good stuff, hopefully by which you'll agree, most of it is a common sense reminder for day to day stuff. Most of it may appear pretty obvious but sometimes we need telling for us to realise.
With regards to identifying risks in a war-zone environment, its probably a bit over the top for most people in an everyday situation and would apply, as it appears to be aimed at, those travelling to places as aid-workers or journalists, most likely against the recommendation of your own country.
Never the less, some amusing stories from the authors SAS past. Still worth a read and some good advice but maybe if you already have some good common sense there wont be much to learn from this. But then, who would deny they have "good common sense"? You wont know until you've read it. I thought i had but still learnt from this book some interesting bits

Perhaps the best advice I have read on home and self protection (and I have read a lot). Not all chapters apply to me at this point in time, but all chapters are very informative and the knowledge can easily be shared with family/friends to help keep them safe. Written by a genuine SAS guy, not an 'EX-SAS' guy, no ego, no macho rubbish, just excellent advice.

interesting if it does seem a bit disjointed in places.

Didn't realise it was going to be a fact file however unlike a lot of the books in this genre it has been really well put together and looks great. The content is very good and really to the point, which i like. Only problem i'm having is that my brother and girlfriend keep robbing it. The pages on travel were particularly useful.
