About the author

Roddy Murray is originally from Glasgow but lives now in The Scottish Borders. His books are dark comedies with a hint a satire which make perfect holiday reading. The first three are stand alone books with different characters and storylines. The fourth is a further adventure of the hapless George Milne failing miserably to live a quiet and boring life in the face of excitement and adventure. The fifth is a dark take on the wielding of power within Westminster. The third George Milne adventure, 'George Milne Must Die' has just been released and finds George desperately trying to avoid the vengeance of an old enemy while reluctantly rekindling his romance with Janine McGovern.
Roddy Murray has a Facebook page: 'Roddy Murray Writings' which combines a range of funny cartoons and articles by other people with shameless plugs for his books. Please like the page and share the cartoons.
All reviews of his books are most welcome as are comments on this site and Facebook.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2014I downloaded this book on a punt as the author shares my last name. While I found the first few chapters interesting it took a bit of effort to read through them as they didn't fully grab my attention. I'm glad i persevered as once the book caught my attention I couldn't put it down. A very enjoyable read that has lead me to download the author's other work.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 April 2015Read and enjoyed this book but not quite as much as his other two. Still a good read though and I did chuckle a bit as I read it, especially George's take on marriage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, zany humour in the tradition of Tom Sharpe - an absolute delight!
From time to time I take a punt on an author who is completely unknown to me, and what a delightful surprise this one was.
George Milne is the most humdrum individual alive. Completely lacking anything approaching initiative, he drifts through life like water, trickling down the path of least resistance, until a hilariously improbably sequence of events supervenes, forcing George farther and farther away from his comfort zone.
Reminiscent of Tom Sharpe at his best, this book was one of the most sheerly entertaining I have read this year. The writing is not particularly polished but is solidly competent, and the extraordinary cast of characters are all beautifully drawn. I laughed out loud many, many times while reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not really 5 star
But too close to matter. Way too many jimmies willies and other undistinguishable names.... I get that youkay sticks to um is boring the term I want? names and does half of the population end with ie? Never mind I lost a quarter of the characters! The plot fell together superbly as did the critters. I can't recall such a surprise filled book right to the last line.
spoiler: don't look for any purring
So if Pup invites me over again I might just go and have an affair with ernie :D
Wait! The Pup has a super cool name
But he will never see this :(

3.0 out of 5 stars The main character is a rather boring guy and life happens to him meaning that he ...
This book was very strange. The story really and by that I mean the criminal case at hands only starts around 42% and finishes around 78%. Before that it's all back story about most of the characters from childhood and even the insignificant characters that you'll barely see again gets that sort of treatment. I wonder why Spider didn't get it though. Then after the 78% it's all about the meaning of what the ending is for the characters and how they move on with their life.
So yes, very strange indeed. I think it works because the story is not showed by told with an omniscient narrator. But for me it made it very difficult to sympathize with the characters.
The main character is a rather boring guy and life happens to him meaning that he has no desire in life and mostly no drive. He has a problem with cleanliness if it does happen to him he doesn't do anything about it. He doesn't want to work. He doesn't want to live out of his mother's house and so on and so on... I think it must be very difficult to live around that sort of person and keep your sanity. The only positive thing is that he seems to have grown in the end.
The villain is a lot more fun. At least he was struggling for what he believed in even if he made rather poor choices. There was some passion and feelings in him which seemed to evade everyone else.
