The Song of Troy Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 425 ratings

It was a clash of arms that would echo through the millennia: a hard-fought conflict born of love, pride, greed and revenge; a decade-long siege of the ancient world's greatest city from which nobody will escape unscathed.

As urgent and passionate as if told for the first time, international besteller Colleen McCullough breathes life into legend, swinging our sympathies from Greece to Troy and back again as they move inexorably towards a fate not even the gods themselves can avert. Here are Greek princess Helen, sensuous and self-indulgent, who deserts a dull husband for the sake of the equally self-indulgent Trojan prince Paris; the haunted warrior Achilles; the heroically noble Hektor; the subtle and brilliant Odysseus; Priam, King of Troy, doomed to make the wrong decisions for the right reasons; and Agamemnon, King of Kings, who consents to the unspeakable to launch his thousand ships, incurring the terrifying wrath of his wife, Klytemnestra.

THE SONG OF TROY: A legend reborn.

Product description

Review

McCullough has written a beginner's guide to Homer, cutting away every last trace of poetry to expose the narrative below... She has done us all a service, reminding those familiar with the classics of the wonder of one of the greatest stories ever told. Each character's personal history is a fascinating story in itself and she retells it as if she were telling a fairy story to a child. - Guardian.

There is much more to Colleen McCullough than The Thorn Birds... There are exciting moments, pacy moments, sexy and romantic moments. - Sunday Times.

Fantastic read! Only wish it had been a lot longer. Great rich historic background, very well researched, intriguing characters, obviously a great story. Would've loved for Colleen McCullough to continue with the Odyssey or Ancient Greek history in general just as she did in Masters of Rome.

A good read. The characters profiles were well conceived and the plots were workable. Once I started reading, could not put it down. This is my first read of a Colleen McCullough novel but it won't be the last.

It was years ago that I read (parts) of the 'Iliad' in school. My brother, who studied latin and classic Greek in highschool gave this book to me (to read - I had to give it back). This is an amazing adaptation of the original story, bringing ancient heroes back to life. And having them tell their own story - brilliant !
She brought Heroes back to life, heroes with their small human side and flaws without deminishing their grandure. I've always loved history, and this book shows how the real cause for the Troyan war was economic rather than a kidnapped Helen (though i admitingly like the romantic idea of the latter)
A must read, a must have...

The story of what the Trojan War might have looked like if it had actually happened along realistic, but still Homeric lines, "The Song of Troy" shows only some of the style that McCullough later brought to the "Masters of Rome" series. It's entertaining, to be sure, but not in the same league as similar efforts by Mary Renault and Steven Pressfield.

If you are looking for "myths as real world stories" fiction, this is an able novel. However, if you are looking for more ancient world McCullough, you'll be disappointed. She had some way to go before she was ready to tackle Gaius Marius after finishing "The Song of Troy."

This story brings the fabled history of the siege and eventual downfall of Troy to life. Colleen McCullough brings brings the characters to life cleverly by having each of them telling parts of the story through their own eyes. A thoroughly good read

It may not be the Iliad, but if Classics are not your thing, this is good. The story is told by the different protagonists and brings the old tale to life. I would definitely recommend it

Easy to read and for anyone who isn't too familiar with the events leadoing up to the fall of Troy (apart from the tales of Helen, Paris, Achilles, Hector and the Trojan Horse) makes you want to know more. It inspired me to go on to read The Iliad, which is more of a struggle!

5.0 out of 5 stars 普遍の人間ドラマ
Reviewed in Japan on 18 October 2004
"Godless Odysseus who was yet beloved of the Gods. Mortal paradox, knave and King rolled in one."

I can't understand why a paperback book would have 1 inch margins. Frankly you could nearly half the size of this book, making it fit inside a purse simply by removing white space. I haven't started reading it yet, but I certainly hope it's good since I'll be carrying around this massive amount of white paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascination interpretaion of the Ilias
Reviewed in Germany on 8 August 2002
Cooleen presents a very interesting and thrilling interpretation of the Ilias. The real book is quite hard to read, at least the first time. This version, however, really got me. It contains all the 'facts' but in a chronological order (this alone helps a lot :-) and added with intersting ideas like the discussion about economic reasons for the attack on Troy (with Helena just a pretext). I suppose that one needs to know Homers version to really appreciate all points...
