About the author

We thriller lovers are always looking for trouble! I hope you'll join me in my literary adventures around the world.
I'm John Hopton. I'm from Yorkshire, UK, and now living in Japan. I write the kind of books I love to read: fast-paced thrillers that take the reader on an international escapade.
I have had lots of wonderful feedback from readers on previous books, and I really appreciate all of it. Along with international thrillers, I also wrote a travelogue. Travelling to places like India, the Middle East, Zambia, East Asia, and Brazil has given me plenty of first-hand experience to work into my novels.
My most exciting project so far is my current one: Tropical Airbourne Adventures starring Nora "Sierra" Byrd - a misanthropic pilot with a decorated Air Force career who now just wants peace and quiet to fix up her planes. But trouble always seems to find her. Serious trouble...
I look forward to our literary travels together!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 March 2014I downloaded this book without knowing anything about it, but am very glad that I did. I got a nostalgic look back at my own formative years, an enticing glimpse of what could be experienced in the big wide world and an exciting adventure all in one.
The characters are well written and vividly described. The main characters are likeable which is definitely a good thing when you find them reminding you of yourself and your friends.
The narrative is interesting and engaging with unexpected twists and turns. It reminded me of the film From Dusk till Dawn, in that it starts out as one genre, before blending rapidly and surprisingly into another.
A highly recommended read at a generous price.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 July 2017This is a great book which I really enjoyed. It's funny, well written and unexpectely endearing.
The story of three men - Will, Gary and Toby - who were childhood friends. The book opens with their time at school together, then their time a couple of decades later when they get back in touch with each other. With Gary and Will having made contact with each other, the two men are then thrown together by circumstances, and set off to India to track down Toby.
As the author's first book, it is great, and doesn't have a 'new author' feel about it. It is well written, pretty well edited and I loved the Yorkshire setting.
The book has a lovely feel-good factor about it. Will, Gary and Toby seem like nice blokes, the type of people you'd want to be friends with. Add in a good story and a lot of humour, and overall I thoroughly enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2014A well written and poignant book which I read in two feverish sittings. There's a level of nostalgia which is easy to relate to and intertwines effectively with a story which has plenty of twist and turns to keep you entertained on top of the mature and thoughtful handling of darker and more sinister topics. There is an enjoyable aside in the running theme of music adopted by the main protagonists which keeps the reader thoroughly entertained. My only minor criticism is the far fetched section at the end of the trip to India but it's still managed well, recommended!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 December 2014This is an extremely funny book, and also has a lot of poignant things to say about British men of transitional age - worrying about the purpose of life and obscure musicians at the same time, in equal measure. It is probably a little ambitious in its scope, failing to cover the nuances of India as well as it does the main narrative, although the trip to India is highly colourful and interesting.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 May 2014I thought this was an easy and fun read (although there is some serious subject matter at the bottom of it!), it reminded me at times of the Mad Dogs television series and I could easily see this being made into a film. The characters were easy to visualise, and relate to but perhaps parts of the storyline a little far fetched. Couldn't put it down once I started, had to find out what happened!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 March 2014I didn't know what to expect when I downloaded Three Little Boys. The story is a unique mixture of a coming of age/travel/adventure/midlife crisis genre, as it follows three friends throughout their lives in England and then unexpectedly, in India. The characters are super relatable as they experience the pitfalls of choices made growing up, then as they explore the ties that bind them once they become adults. The dialogue is witty and fun, and I found myself laughing out loud in every chapter. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 February 2014I began cringing amid my own embarrassment from the very first page, as I recalled with a watery mouth the pain of being an awkward, socially inept kid at school. The witty prose has the laughs coming thick and fast, and in the three boys/teenagers/men I'm sure any British middle aged man (or any man of any age from any country, come to that) will find something of himself in this story, though that might not be your proudest moment! Oh my, the scene at the pub...how many times have we lived through that?!
Three Little Boys is a fantastic tale that traverses decades and continents, and if you can get past the uneasy feeling that it is actually about you and your mates and the ridiculous things you did in the pursuit of happiness, then you'll surely love it.
Highly recommended first novel...I just hope there's a follow up.
Thanks John Hopton, for a really enjoyable albeit uncomfortable trip down memory lane.
Steven Moore.
