4.3 out of 5 stars 40,654 ratings

No one is safe when obsession takes over.

Olivia Brookes and her children have been reported missing, and DCI Tom Douglas is concerned. He remembers the family from an incident two years earlier: it seems that Olivia’s life has always been fraught with drama.

All the evidence suggests that Olivia and her children were in the family home that morning. Her car is in the garage, her purse is in her handbag – on the kitchen table.

The police want to issue an appeal, but for some reason every single picture of the family has been removed from albums, from phones, from computers.

And then they find the blood…

Has the past caught up with Olivia?

Sleep Tight – if you can. You never know who’s watching.

Olivia Brookes does not have a lot of good luck and comes to the attention of the police on 4 separate occasions. First Olivia reports that her boyfriend has gone missing. Second Olivia reports that she found both her parents dead in their home. Third Olivia reports that her husband and their three children have gone missing. But the fourth time it is her husband Robert who reports that Olivia and the three children have gone missing. Can DCI Tom Douglas solve if Olivia is unlucky or are darker forces at play?

I really enjoyed reading Sleep Tight and I loved how the story unfolded. Nagging doubts were thrown at the reader all the way through this book. All the characters had scope for dirty dealings and the reader does not know who to trust. There are three central characters with their points of view pointing the reader in different directions. Olivia, her husband Robert and DCI Tom Douglas but who has got it right?

The plot of Sleep Tight is very, very clever. It is centered around the idea of obsession. There are many twists in this story and it has you pulling this way and that. You think that you understand exactly what is going on only to be shocked by yet another revelation. Finally you have a surprise ending and you think WTF?

I found Sleep Tight far better than the first two novels in this series - it gives me all I want from a crime thriller with a psychological twist. I loved all the little details that were thrown into this story, their importance were all revealed towards the end. The clues are all there but quite often ignored as simply setting a scene. I think Sleep Tight is an OUTSTANDING read that gets the top score of 5 stars from me.

Basically a good story. More crime than psychological crime.
Lots of POV shifting,  which, on the whole, is handled well. However,  the multi POVs do foreshadow a lot of what other characters come to realise later on, so ultimately the reader sees a lot of what's coming and what should be big twists or major reveals are not the 'aha' moments you wish they had of been. There are one or two small reveals at the end though.
For the most part the characters are well-drawn, the female ones better than the male. One particular problematic character for me was Tom  the chief inspector. Many times in his POV I felt this is not how a man would think or behave in this situation,  and I felt the author allowed herself drift into a female perspective. So at times it felt that Tom read as though this is how a woman thinks a man would / should feel rather than how he does. This is a common error / weakness with a lot of female authors.
Another small issue was the number of small 'Mrs xxx' type characters that weren't always apparent which one we were talking about - but that's a v small point.
One subplot to do with a break in of Tom's cottage and a mystery surrounding his brother's death went absolutely nowhere and frankly felt as though it had been stuck in to distract the reader from the places where the  main plot pace seemed to drag. It was unfortunate as this was shaping up to be an interesting diversion but ultimately frustrated due to no resolution.
The pace was fairly steady up to the denouement though I felt with a bit more editing it could have easily lost another 10-15%.

    Overall 3.75-4.00

When DCI Tom Douglas is called in to investigate a missing woman and her three children from her home in Manchester he is surprised to find that Olivia’s name has come up in previous investigations. He is left to ponder, how unlucky can one woman be?

Olivia first called the police when her partner, Dan, disappeared leaving her holding the baby, apart from a text apologising that was the last anyone heard of him. A couple of months later she calls the police after finding her parents dead in their house. All goes quiet for Olivia for a few years until she calls the police once again when her husband, Robert, disappears with her three children from their house and now two years later she has disappeared without trace. Tom Douglas is keen to put out an appeal to find them but Robert is unable to find a single photo of any of them.

This book contains everything that a good psychological thriller should; there is a great puzzle to be solved, an uncertainty about which characters can be believed as Olivia and Robert explain some of their actions the result being that some of what I read literally gave me goose bumps as I couldn’t help but imagine myself in Olivia’s shoes.

The series is now well-developed, DCI Tom Douglas and Sergeant Becky Robinson are likeable characters who work well together but this isn’t a police procedural, so although their back stories are evolving, they don’t overpower the focus of the book which centres on Olivia and Robert’s relationship. The power of Rachel Abbott’s writing is the fact that her characters behave like real people in that their reactions to events are realistic. That isn’t to say they react exactly how I would in every instance but the elements that make up the personalities are consistent which keeps the plot grounded without wild flights of fancy.

Sleep Tight is one of those rare books that deserves the moniker ‘page turner!’ one which means I have resented the intrusion of real people while my mind grappled with the events in Sleep Tight.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Page Turner of a Mystery!
Reviewed in the United States on 13 April 2015
Sleep Tight is an unforgettable mystery that I could not put down. The story was well crafted and had more twists and turns than a spider's web. The characters were interesting, well defined and fascinating. A thoroughly enjoyable read by a creative author.

The protagonists, Olivia and Robert, were in the beginning an enigma but slowly the author defines them for the reader. Olivia, the main protagonist, is used to having her own way but meets a man who she becomes involved with and gets pregnant. Dan is from Iran and his family would not accept her and he must choose between his family and Liv. Now that she is pregnant she feels lost and turns to her parents but something happens to prevent her from going to them. Strange things happen and she is caught up in a new relationship that she is not sure is right.

There are many circumstances that keep her from getting away from this man who she has now married. She now has two more children, sons that she loves more than life itself. She has never forgotten her first love, Dan. But will she ever escape the clutches of this possessive and cloying relationship? Will she be reunited with the man she truly loves so her daughter will know her father?

Reviewed in India on 10 January 2021
Thriller for sure. Rachel comes up with an interesting plot where love and one hell of a one makes a person do what normally is an abnormal behaviour.
Olivia's boyfriend Dan disappears all of a sudden leaving a pregnant Olivia devastated. Adding further to her sadness is the death of her parents and that too in a very suspectible way. Robert comes to her aid and marries her. She's finally happy with her new life and they are blessed with two kids.
Fast forward to nine years, Robert reports to police that Olivia and their three kids are missing.
Enter Detectives Tom Douglas and Becky to investigate the case. Tom also had handled the investigation of disappearance of Olivia's boyfriend and death of her parents. His investigation yielded no fruitful result. Now, he's incharge of the missing Olivia and kids. His gut says that it's more than a missing case as it seems.
Read this thriller to find out whether Olivia and kids are found out or not.
