- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 May 2014As a child growing up in Ireland I had a huge passion for fairy folklore and remember devouring anything written by Sinead DeValera, W.B Yeats and several other great writers. Thirty years later and this book has re-ignited my love of Irish mythology. Whilst reading it I felt as if I had been teleported back to the happy and magical days of my childhood which was spent listening to my elders talk of the Leprechauns and Sidhe that lived among us.
The story is set during the 1916 Easter rising and centres around the rich DeVernon Family and an Evil Witch (Sidhe) called Rioghnach who attempts to gain control of the lost realm (Ireland). As with all classic fairy storys there is the beautiful yet vunerable protagonist Kate and the handsome hero Bran who are thrown together to fight the evil that threatens to invade the country.
The book is a magnificent fusion of Irish History and mythological folklore. It is very well written and the style at times is reminiscent of James Herbert and Stephen King. The climax is full of twists and turns and the ending was totally unexpected allowing for a possible sequel. Highly recommended, I will wait with bated breath for the sequel.

With brilliant descriptive writing and excellent character development, I really bought into the story. Irish folklore truly comes to life, in a wonderful mix with the social and political upheaval of the time. 5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous suspense fill fantasy mixed with Irish Folk lore!
The Rise of the Sidhe by Christina George
Lord de Verdun is attacked by a Sidhe and he falls into a deep sleep. His daughter Catherine "Kate" is desperate to find a way to wake her father and figure out what is happening. She meets Bran, a war veteran with many secrets, he comes to her aide. What she discovers is shocking but she accepts life for what it is.
Together they discover that Rioghnach, a dark fairy woman has risen from the ground angry and power hungry. Bran is the one who holds the key, the answers and the power to stop what could soon destroy all of Ireland.
A fantastic story set in 1916 Ireland. I loved the blend of Irish folk lore, action and suspense in the story. Twists, turns and surprises arise along with likable characters and undesirable ones as well. Well written and filled with intrigue and suspense.
I highly recommend to those who love fantasy and Irish-based stories. I also liked at the end the index of Irish characters and mythical creatures with meaning and pronunciation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok read
Kind of disappointed in this book. It has way too much descriptive rhetoric in the paragraphs and definitely needs more action.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those that enjoy fairies and possibilities
The Rise Of The Sidhe is an extremely well-written fantasy must read. And it's not a short book! If you enjoy fairies, fantasy, and the possibility that maybe all those old superstitions might just be true, you'll love this book. I almost felt like I was there in Ireland, the writing just flowed that well.
