I lived, loved and worked for eight long years in Puglia in the deep south of Italy's heel. From 2005 until 2008, I taught English at the University of Salento, Lecce - that amazing, baroque city that surprises all who visit it. It was my Italian 'girlfriend' who suggested that I should write mystery novels. She became the reluctant heroine of the series of three novels set in Puglia.

The three novels, 'Dancing to the Pizzica', 'The Demise of Judge Grassi, and 'Leonardo's Trouble with Molecules' are stories of suspense, intrigue, romance and the insidious hold of the mafia in Italy. But the stories are laced with humour too. It is impossible to live in Italy and not be struck by the Italians' anarchical relationship with the State, the government - and each other!

My ambition is simply to create stories that adults, young or old, will enjoy reading - my sixteen year-old granddaughter is among my youngest fans. I love Italy and France, and much prefer living in the countryside to city life. I have also written a book of not so short stories entitled 'Long Shorts'. Read the first three novels! Get to know Rosaria and Adam and follow the adventures in which they become involved.

There is a new series of novels - in the same genre. The stories are set in Abruzzo - a region in the centre of Italy. Fortunately, or not, depending on your viewpoint, Abruzzo is largely undiscovered by the tourist industry. The Adriatic Sea bathes its coast while the Apennine mountains rise magnificently in the background. Abruzzo is one of Europe's least spoilt regions. A new set of characters, led by Commissario Beppe Stancato, are waiting to introduce you to new and intriguing cases. The first in the series is called "The Case of the Sleeping Beauty". There are another three titles in the Abruzzo series of novels: A Close Encounter with Mushrooms - a story of misplaced revenge by mushroom poisoning. The Vanishing Physicist.- a story, based on a real life situation, finds Beppe Stancato involved in a suspenseful hunt for an abducted scientist who goes missing from Abruzzo's advanced, mountain top physics laboratory. There is now a fourth novel in the Commissario Stancato series, entitled Death Is Buried. It deals with the scourge of the dumping of toxic waste by the mafia clans in rural Italy. There is also a free-standing novel of a similar genre entitled The Curse of Collemaga (2019) - a story of modern-day witchcraft - based (loosely) on real-life events. Look up the titles on Amazon. You will be heading towards an entertaining reading experience full of Italian characters with all their foibles and idiosyncrasies. If you like Donna Leon and Andrea Camilleri, there is a good chance that you will enjoy reading my novels too. Richard Walmsley - 2020

I am hooked. I love Richard Warmsley's books. This is the third book in the trilogy and I knew I would love it. However I did not expect the attention to detail with regard to the science. I was immediately transported into the scientific world, my background and could see and experience exactly the labs and the environment of this book. Richard is so good at describing the settings and the scenery of Italy. The action takes place in and around the University at Lecce and I feel I must visit the area myself. The detail about the invisibility cloak has been echoed in real research being done today so Richard is right up to date. I really recommend these books for a jolly good read and one you won't be able to put down. I cannot wait to start the next trilogy. The first in the series is called The Case of the Sleeping Beauty.
Brilliant cover design and even cheaper if you want to download from kindle. I still prefer to read a book.

I always read Walmsley's books in the middle of an English winter. Sunshine and excitement flow through the window and keep the grey sky and cold wind at bay. Once more I am in southern Italy sitting at a table sipping red wine and chewing an olive as Walmsley guides me through his latest thriller. Academic research and industrial espionage in the university of Puglia might be a tough challenge for any writer but Walmsley pulls it off once again, aided by dollops of greed, sex and corruption. A cracking read.

Written in the usual attractive style, the subject of this sequel is novel and interesting. Very readable with plenty of excitement

Great read, with fantastic detail, making scientific technologies and crime investigation exciting and mysterious. Thought provoking and passionate with roots of southern Italy weaved throughout.

This is the final book in the trilogy and I was very keen to read more of Adam and Rosario’s love story and also more crime and intrigue. The book is a very interesting and engaging read (as are the others in the series) and I was instantly transported once again to the area of Italy the author obviously knows and loves so well. I loved the humour in the book and the part played by Adam and Rosy’s children and also found the science interesting. Though I’m sad to come to the end of Adam and Rosario’s story, I’m looking forward to reading more of Richard Walmsley’s novels.

I have only recently discovered Richard Walmsley's books and I just love them. They have wonderful people that you get to know and I can't wait to visit the areas in which the books are set. An added bonus is learning some pithy Italian phrases! There is always a mystery but nothing so deep that the plot can't be followed. In this book I learned some fascinating scientific facts - so don't let the title put you off.

I read this book on holiday. It was a great story, told in a way that was easy to visualise, and which showed real insight into places and culture in the heel of Italy. I read it straight through in two sessions because it was compelling as a story. The author's love of Italy shines through. As constructive feedback, I thought the characterisation of the female characters could have been done with more subtlety, and more could have been made of some of the supporting cast to bring the plot's industrial espionage theme out.

Walmsley does it again. A great read set in gorgeous Puglia, the southernmost part of Italy, with Elena as the Private investigator...with a little help from her delightful family who just can't help but get a little bit involved too, just in a teeny tiny nano way. This time she's on an even more challenging case in the fascinating new world of nanotechnology. Walmsley has obviously done some good research into this and thank you for sharing it with us in this most intriguing way. I just couldn't put this book down, one chapter rolled into the next, captivated and totally engrossed in this book. I have learned and discovered lots of new things. I am not a science/technology person so I was a bit dubious at first, but Walmsley's great style of writing makes it all so fascinating. Thank you so much once again for this wonderful read, I hope he will write another book in this series, it's so exciting and intriguing being part of Elena's life and solving these mysterious cases. I'm sure there are loads more cases for her to solve in your exciting and charming and gorgeous Salento!!!!
