'Perry's infallible feeling for the historical moment yields animated political views of Victorian society at play' -
New York Times Book Review

Someone in the Colonial Office is passing secrets to Germany about England's strategy on Africa. While Police Superintendent Thomas Pitt investigates this matter of treason, he is quietly looking into the tragic death of his childhood mentor, Sir Arthur Desmond. Pitt believes that Sir Arthur was murdered, and that the crime is connected with the treachery in the government. And when the strangled body of an aristocratic society beauty is found floating near lonely Traitors Gate, Pitt and his clever wife, Charlotte, begin to see clearly the pattern of tragedy and frightening evil that Pitt must deal with, at the risk of his career - and his life.

This was very involved and it gripped you from beginning to end. It makes one realise how lucky we are now. Things were so hard back in those days. We should thank the Women who gave up so much to get us the vote. Thank you Anne Perry.

Another excellent Anne Perry. She takes one into the heart of Victorian London with all its pathos and hypocrisy. The poverty and wealth side by side but each side unable to connect.

Good book as all our by Anne Perry

Nothing wrong with the book, it's up to the usual standards of this writer.

It is, however, a US edition. I appreciate that Americans are very insular, but to have an English book dumbed down with their mode of spelling is irritating to say the least. If I read a novel by an American author, I expect American English. Is the US market really so unintelligent that it needs the Americanisation of English books? If it does, then they are a pretty sad lot.

    It spoiled the book.

This series only gets better as it goes along. Numerous overlapping storylines are resolved within a book or over several books, without feeling contrived. Not everything is resolved, which is also very satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Très bon roman victorien!
