A Single Step isn’t the sort of book I usually read, but I’m very glad I did. It’s a mystery and a romance that’s seamlessly literary and carries you along as the captivating plot unfolds. It’s a first-person narrative, my personal favourite type of novel, and the heroine, Emma Grayson is a complex person. The story starts with her having in interview for a new job, a way of making a totally fresh start after a long period of personal troubles. The new situation she finds herself in is fascinating: a huge complex farm and fine old manor house, run in a military style, where Emma’s job is to be to set up riding stables and look after the horses when they arrive. Along with her beloved dog, Suzi, Emma intends to work alone, and keep her distance from everyone. But when she meets her new kind-hearted colleagues, she finds she can’t help making friends, yet we wonder, what is happening that she doesn’t know about? What is this large farm’s business? Is it all it seems, or are there lurking mysteries under the surface, that Emma knows nothing about? Why is her new employer so interested in her unarmed combat abilities, and how has he found out all about her previous life before she even met him? And when the handsome taciturn Trent comes into her orbit she dislikes him at first, especially as his past is a total mystery that no one will talk about . . .
Emma has a lot of problems. She is recovering from her own personal tragedy and marriage break-up, and all she wants is to start afresh in her own time, in her own space. But try as she might to remain aloof and alone, she finds that she has to accept help occasionally. And she’s extremely glad of this assistance when events take more and more sinister turns until she finds herself in mortal danger. Yet who is her unknown enemy? Going into more details here would spoil the story.
If you like an interesting, flawed, but sexy heroine who can give as good as she gets, you’ll love this book. And if you like handsome, enigmatic strong-but-silent heroes, and mysterious goings-on in a lovely countryside location where no one is quite who they seem to be, you’ll love it too.
I’m very much looking forward to the next two books that are coming soon in the Grayson Trilogy.

Emma Grayson desperately needs a fresh start after a devastating personal trauma compounded by a betrayal she couldn’t comprehend. She secures a job with Lord Cavendish of Melton Manor Estate, managing the stables and looking after the horses, after the advert for the job had been posted to her anonymously. Hurt beyond measure and disillusioned, she is wary of getting close to anyone again and just wants to get on with her job and be left alone. The community on the Estate is a tight knit one though and Emma soon finds herself, almost against her will, being drawn in and actually enjoying making new friends.

The story is told in the first person by Emma, which gives the tragedy she suffered even more poignancy and engenders a deep sympathy and understanding for her. Despite her initial contrary attitude with people, it’s easy to like her and very obvious she loves the horses and her dog, Susie.

The suspense builds slowly and, with little hints dropped about Emma’s self-defense abilities, you know something is looming, and Emma’s skills are displayed unexpectedly during a night out. And as the sparks begin between Emma and Trent, it becomes apparent he has secrets of his own which he’s unwilling to talk about.

Really good, strong portrayals of Trent, enigmatic and aloof, and Emma, stubborn and edgy, and their personalities develop as the story progresses. The other characters, although likeable, were slightly less well-rounded but hopefully will come into their own as the series moves forward. The setting and atmosphere of the estate is created in such detail it’s easy to have a mental picture running with the narrative. And, although I’m not a horsey person, I found the descriptions of work at the stables and the horses interesting to read.

There are a lot of surprises revealed along the way, character wise, and even the estate isn’t quite what it seems. Melton Manor has an air of mystery about it as Lord Cavendish and his right hand man, Trent, disappear on business trips several times in the Estate’s helicopter and the male staff all belong, in some capacity, to the military.

Well written and entertaining, I enjoyed the storyline and look forward to following on with the series.

I didn't think I would enjoy a 'romance' genre book. How wrong could I be. It's not a cheesy romance book like I had imagined, but a gritty and suspense filled storyline. I don't even like horses which feature a lot in this book, but again loved it! The scene is so beautifully and clearly set and the characters unravel at a pace that keeps you totally hooked. I was swept along with Emma's pain and despite knowing there was a romance looming, the anticipation had me unable to put the book down. Completely lost myself in this book, pure escapism. Beautifully written in an easy style to read without long boring bits of description that can make you lose interest. Highly recommend and cannot wait to read the next one in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars A romantic thriller that surprises with unexpected twists
Reviewed in the United States on 6 April 2016
I'm not typically drawn to this genre of book -- which I'd define as "romantic thriller" -- but I've enjoyed this writer's take on the topic of books and writers on her blog, so it seemed time to explore some of her narrative work. I picked up copies of all three of her Grayson Trilogy and was immediately swept up into the saga of Emma Grayson.

Though I've read the entire series -- A Single Step, Before the Dawn, and this one, Thicker Than Water -- I am leaving the same review on all three pages because my perspective is about the trilogy as a whole (rather than any one of the three books), which would accurately be described as "Parts One, Two and Three" of an unfolding narrative, rather than three standalone books. But I urge readers to start from the beginning with the first book, necessary to getting the full arc of the story, and certainly the most enjoyable way to experience it.

Georgia Rose is a skilled, engaging writer who pulls you into the story immediately, without an overabundance of hyperbole and fluff, which I particularly enjoyed. Her protagonist, Emma Grayson, is a young woman brought up in foster care, who's lost her only child by illness, her marriage by affair (her husband's), and her entire sense of self due to the critical mass of these devastating events. She takes a job as a stable master at a large and somewhat enigmatic manor out in the English countryside, looking both to find solitude and detach from life as she's known it, and this is where the story unfolds.

There is the requisite cast of characters that inspires immediate laying of bets as to who will be become her romantic interest (I guessed correctly!), but despite that unavoidably predictable element (these ARE romance novels!), Rose finds a way to roll out her story with a depth and detail that is unexpected. I particularly enjoyed the specificity with which she describes Emma's job as a stable master; the arcane details of caring for horses and their environs was not only educational and interesting, it contributed a very visceral backdrop for the plot, which was expertly interwoven throughout.

Another touching and thoughtful plot element was the emotional and very relatable journey Emma experiences in continuing to mourn her daughter. As readers, we could feel the loss and agony along with her, and Rose does an excellent job of bringing this in and out of the story without making the topic maudlin or manipulative. The impact of losing a child becomes a very salient part of Emma's character and the journey she's on, impacting the choices she makes, both good and less good, and we are always led to feel both empathetic and hopeful that she will traverse that loss to allow herself a happy life once again.

The other characters in the book, from the man she falls in love with, to the "noble couple" who own the Manor, to the other Manor staff, are individually defined, with specific character traits and compelling roles in the drama, and, again, Rose shows her skill in fleshing those out in ways that are rich in detail and personal narrative.

The thriller plot line (which I won't give away!) was unexpected and initially struck me as a bit larger-than-life (certainly the life we're set up to believe Emma will be living!), but once you hop on board and just decide to take this wild ride-- inclusive of international espionage and some nefarious characters up to no good--it's darkly suspenseful and quite the page-turner. Rose's imaginative twists and nail-biting turns are exciting and visual, and here is where a reader is obligated to read all three books to get the full spectrum of that storyline and its denouement.

Which is also true of the romantic side of this tale. Emma's slow opening up, of her heart, her trust, her willingness to once again embrace life and love, is tender and affecting, and we WANT her to get there. Rose pushes her character, sometimes to uncomfortable places, to force her face all the corners of her life, past and present, dark and light, allowing her to come into her own as a newly realized woman, and for the reader, it is a lovely journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series and recommend it to readers, even those who don't normally turn to romance...because it's certainly more than just that! Additionally, it's written by an author who obviously put a lot of care and attention into creating not only an engaging story, but a physical book put together with a professional touch, from the well-formatted interior to the beautiful covers, something I, for one, always appreciate!

I wasn't sure at first what kind of book this was going to be. I thought at first it might be a "chick.lit", but it was anything but.

What I particularly liked was the descriptions of the settings. You could practically smell the stables!

The characters were all people you'd like to meet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading book 2 of the trilogy.
