Clean Slate: A Detective Novel (Jim Knighthorse Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 652 ratings

Private investigator Jim Knighthorse is hired to find out if Freddie Calgary, a popular actor, really did overdose and die two years ago―or, as some rumors suggest, faked his death and is on the run.

As always, Jim is up to the task... and in need of money. His surreal investigation soon turns into one big road trip as he follows the clues from Los Angeles to Sedona and finally to San Antonio, TX.

There, Jim is about to discover that not only can miracles happen, but the world is a far darker and creepier place than even he imagined. Luckily, Knighthorse doesn't scare easily...

Clean Slate is the fourth and final book in the Jim Knighthorse series of mystery novels. This series is jam-packed with one-liners, fist fights, gun fights, and a tough-as-nails detective with a heart of gold.

You'll either love or hate the Jim Knighthorse books, I definitely fall into the latter camp. Only strange bit was Jim's miracle cure but other than that it's up to the usual high standard.

I'm addicted to Jim Knighthorse series and very much looking forward to book #5
So well written. The character of Jim Knighthorse is getting better & growing with each book. You want to get to the end to know the outcome but on the other hand you don't want it to end as it's so gripping.
Best of all they have me laughing out loud which is a great plus for me.

Where do you find a guy like Jim knighthorse. Big Bad Bold Beautiful (sorry handsome) an athlete a Private investigator thuggish at times with a soft as putty centre. He is a whole lot of man and he'd be the first to admit it. He is a walking conflict. Still raw from finding his mothers killer and finally seeing him despatched by his father a man he thought never cared for his mother he sets off on his next investigation. Manages to have several jobs on going at the one time . Along the way he manages to set out some summary justice to the bad guys. saves a dog, saves a girl from certain death. He drinks. drinks too much he'll give it up for Cindy one day ( the love of his life) His ethereal mentor Jack is his conscious soul ( is he real or a figment of his imagination). I love this character, he is larger than life with a heart as big as his frame. I'm rooting for him. Good tie in to Silent Echo and nice to know Numi is following in his friends footsteps.

Can't get enough of Jim Knighthorse at the moment. I will truly be quite sad when I come to the end of his rein (get it?). Chuckles, life lessons, badass bouts & the godly Jack of course, who I'm a firm believer in, who wouldn't be? J.R.Rain you are one of a kind, just because you get me (Joe Public,) Jim and God. That's awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Knighthorse
Reviewed in the United States on 8 January 2014
I have been waiting forever for this fourth book in the series. This series has always been a favorite of mine, Jim Knighthorse always at the back of my mind. He is a lovable ex-football player, not perfect by any means, but doing his best to do his best. Now he has a dog he has adopted that was once abused, a girlfriend who loves him even though he has some issues, and he meets God for coffee at McDonalds. Just can't forget a book like that.
Knighthorse has grown a lot since the last book and now he is hired to find an ex-child TV star who was dead but might not be dead. But then other people end up dead. Got it? Even though his client is now dead (seeing a trend, are you?), Knighthorse carries on with the investigation and finds a lot of confusion to untangle. Along the way he helps people out, he meets with God (who seems to be following him now), has his own miracle performed, and figures out the mystery of the dead/not dead ex-child TV star. And what a crazy ending it is. Never in a million years would have seen that one coming. I just love it when that happens!
This is definitely J.R. Rain at his best. He just keeps getting better and better. His books seem to fly by. Yes, they are shorter than the typical ebooks, but there is none of the flowery, detailed, descriptions that just add boredom to your reading. Who needs that? Action and adventure and intrigue is what the reader wants. We want to be swept up into the story and not let go until the very last page. With Rain, that is what we get every time. Never a dissappointing book from him for me. I see he has the next book listed at the end of this one, and I can't wait for that one to come out. Gotta love Knighthorse and Rain!

4.0 out of 5 stars Clean Slate
Reviewed in the United States on 2 July 2015
I really liked this series to date the only thing that keeps me from loving it and actually giving it the full 5 stars is the repetition.I understand that this means these books cans be read as a standalone but, for the the reader of the series I think it can be a real turn off and the author should consider that most his readers are all about the long term. This is the 4th book I have read in the Knighthorse series, and I have loved watching the character of Jim Knighthorse grow as a person,as a detective. We get a chance to see a multifaceted human being who tries hard , and makes mistakes. He learns from them and continues to try and be a better person with the help of his loving and patient girlfriend, his abused dog he rescued, his good friend from college who is now a cop,and a homeless man who may or may or may not be God.I love his conversations with "God" those are some of the greatest lines in the book. The dialogue is smart, the plot is good, very few typos,I recommend this book if you are a fan or you like a quick, smart, modern, detective story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor attempt to emulate a great

No one slings sass like Robert B. Parker and Spenser and that includes J .R.Rain and Jim Knighthorse. In my reader’s ear the dialogue here sounded forced and hollow and I couldn’t develop an affinity for the character. Overall it seemed like a thinly veiled attempt to cash in on Parker’s success in the genre by creating a similar protagonist. It didn’t work for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Total waste of time
Reviewed in Canada on 11 March 2014
What plot there is in this book could be written in a dozen pages. Most of the book is taken up with sequences where the main character in the story keeps meeting up with a homeless man who is supposedly God. In one sequence the meeting of the two results in the magical removal of a number of screws falling out of the main charactes reconstructed knee- I kid you not.
I have been reading books now for close to six decades and pride myself on never not finishing a book. Came close to putting this one down but was intrigued by how silly it could get. In that sense it did not disappoint.
