Alive and Killing (David Wolf Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 14,478 ratings

The Amazon bestselling series continues as David Wolf is pulled into deadly action with the last person he wants by his side—his teenaged son.

Just for a day, Colorado Sheriff David Wolf trades slogging through murky meltwaters and even murkier small-town politics for an overnight camping trip in the wilderness with his son. But when a man with fresh burns turns up on their trail, falling from the heavy load in his backpack and running wild from
something, Wolf suspects the camping trip may have taken a turn for the worse.

Unfortunately his instincts are spot on, and Wolf is forced into action with the last person he wants by his side in a deadly battle. When news of their episode travels through the valleys, local FBI agents want to take over the investigation, hoping to halt murder and corruption originating 7,000 miles away in Afghanistan. But national security or not, Jack’s safety is at stake, and orders to stand down fall on Wolf's deaf ears.

In this stomach-dropping, action and suspense-packed third installment of the David Wolf Mystery Thriller series, Wolf partners with Kristen Luke, an FBI agent from the local field office, and quickly learns he and his son aren't out of danger yet. Because someone the authorities thought dead may actually be alive, and viciously killing.

Can they solve the mystery emerging from the other side of the world before the fallout destroys all Wolf holds close at home? Alive and Killing has mystery, thrills, suspense, and action that will grab and pin you down until the final page.

Jeff Carson is the International-Bestselling author of the David Wolf and Ali Falco Series. Set in the high country of Colorado, mountain west, and Europe, his books are chock-full of action, mystery, thrills, suspense, and twists you'll never see coming. Add a bit of humor and romance, a colorful cast of characters, all set in ruggedly beautiful territory, and it's clear why the novels have gained acclaim among readers.

The first novel in the David Wolf series, Foreign Deceit, is an international mystery-thriller he wrote while living in Italy for a year with his wife and son. The next 17 books in the still ongoing David Wolf series are set in the mountain-western United States. The Ali Falco series stars a detective in the Siena region of Tuscany, Italy.

Jeff acquired a love for adventure-thriller-mystery-suspense fiction at a young age by listening to audio books while driving the vast landscapes of the western U.S. with his family. One leg of a trip from Denver to Payette, Idaho (to visit relatives) was enough time to squeeze in a good Cussler, a Christie, a Child, a Silva, a Box, a Flynn, a Cornwell, a Baldacci, or one of the others he considers master story-tellers. Now he incorporates many the same elements of those authors in his own writing.

Jeff and his wife currently live with their two sons in Colorado.

I had no idea until the author's note at the end that this is a self published book. The quality of the writing and content of the book rivals many out there than have gone through the more commercial publishing process.

On to the book...... I completely agree with what a previous reviewer wrote about how well the author sets the scene. No detail is left out and even though I have never been to the area he is writing about, I felt I could place myself in all the situations because they had been described so well. I also really appreciated the consistency of the descriptions. Even when he is writing high impact, fast paced scenes, the link in the scenery ensures fantastic continuity.

The content of this book is great! I don't want to give the plot away, as you should read and enjoy it yourself! The chemistry between the characters (not just the male/female lead) and the depth of plot made this the novel that kept on giving. Never are you allowed to meander through chapters, everything written is pertinent to the story. A really good read and I'm definitely going to read the rest of the series.

Finally, even though (as I found out when looking up the book), it's the 3rd book in a series, the novel felt completely stand alone and thoroughly enjoyable in that context.

‘Alive and Killing’ by Jeff Carson is the third book in the David Wolf series and having read the other two and thoroughly enjoyed them it followed that I had to get this one too.

Life caught up with me and I didn’t really have the time to read once I’d purchased but based on his previous offerings I made time and started reading anyway with only half a mind on it. Well, it didn’t take long before I was totally engrossed and couldn’t put it down and found myself reading at every opportunity.

This book is set in Colorado where Jeff grew up and still lives to this day and it is obvious in his writing that he knows the area, terrain and people very well. Jeff writes extremely well, with great characters, scene setting, continuity, suspense and action. I really feel he is up there with all my other favorite authors like James Patterson, Nelson Demille, Greg Iles and Matthew Reilly. Yes, I’m not comparing apples for apples here but telling you that in my opinion he is a top notch author. If you are tempted, make sure you start off with his first novel, Foreign Deceit. If you've read the other two in this series then you'll need no further prompting!

I don't normally bother writing book reviews but as I've recently got back into reading having got rather bored with the internet, I finally got around to having a look at this book which I downloaded as a freebie ages ago. I didn't know what to expect, as a lot of freebies are pretty poor, and I end up deleting them within a few pages, but on this occasion I was far from disappointed! I normally like Lee Child - Jack Reacher books, and while I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was in Child's league, for a self published book, it was a really good read. I won't go into the storyline as you can read it for yourself, and while others have made some knit picky comments, all in all I found it to be a book which I really got into and struggled to put down. I really liked the character of 'Wolf', and found the plot believable and intriguing.

I'll definitely be going back and starting at the beginning of the David Wolf novels, just hope they're all as good as this one.

This is the third in Jeff Carson's Wolfe series and like the others is an enjoyable read. The small town, mountain location gives the story an atmosphere similar to other authors of this genre like CJ Box, and Ace Atkins and makes you feel you're actually there. Good story telling with a interesting array of characters.

I do like to read a good series: the characters develop, you become familiar with their personal circumstances, environs... I also like it when the author offers their first book for free. It gives me the opportunity to try their work, their style. This is a series I am enjoying, will read all the rest. I feel like I know the area - no, but would recognise it. Extremely well written, and extremely well edited and proofread. Strongly recommended

I've read a few of the David Wolf series and I suspect this one was a little spoiled by me reading them out of order. There were parts in this book that made me keep wondering if I'd read it before (I read a lot of books) - but it was just that I knew bits of it from flashback mentions from later stories.

My one little gripe is calling the FBI lady Luke. It's her surname but as she is constantly referred to as that it makes it a little confusing, being a man's name and all. Otherwise another cracking read - and need to get back on track with reading them in the correct sequence !

I have to blame Jeff Carson for my third sleepless night in a row. I picked up the first book in the David Wolf series on the other evening. I couldn’t put the book down. I finished that after staying up all night reading it. After a pause to conduct my chores during the morning and afternoon, I picked up the second book and the second book had me repeat my evening and night again, bringing me to my third night. I pulled “Alive and Killing” and said to myself “I will just reads couple chapters and then go to sleep. Who was I kidding. Jeff just makes you into a third party just observing the action in the book. But like David Wolf, you don’t get much sleep, as you are hanging on every written word in the story.
Even though I tense up when David gets involved in a case, I feel such a relief when I finish the book. But afterwards, I am eager to get on to the next in the series.
Oh, my! Another sleepless night, lol!

This book was a non stop entangled plot that kept you thinking you knew what was going to happen . Then you realize there is another twist that leads you down a different path. In the end the author brings it all together in an ending that suggest a whole lot of new beginnings. Thank you for the great read.
