The Survival A True Story by Lisa WB Following A Fine Line A Balance to Survive. Kindle Edition
The book is powerful and emotional and through Lisa’s honesty the reader can start to understand some of the pain and rational of a survivor of child abuse, the strength of grooming, the denial and conflict, and how a survivor is reluctant to believe anything else than the abuser was being loving and caring at the time of the abuse.
Lisa’s account has already been recognized, as significant from many medical professionals for the experience of her past. Her powerful struggle to overcome the harm inflicted with the support of others is of huge interest and many survivors will be able to relate to the emotional journey of events.
Dr Trevor Friedman has written the foreword for The Survival and this also demonstrates the significance of the book.
FOREWORD
I was very pleased to be asked to write a foreword for Lisa’s new book. I was Lisa’s psychiatrist and figure as ‘Dr Lynn‘ in her previous book – A Fine Line. I treated Lisa for almost 20 years; an extremely long time to see any patient in the National Health Service. I remember during her therapy sessions, Lisa telling me that she intended to write a book about her life and treatment. We often discussed the purpose of the book and what she hoped to gain from writing it. She never expected it to have the success it has achieved and that so many thousands of people would read it and find it of interest and benefit to them.
The reason that the account of her journey over the years and the therapy she received is important and interesting is that Lisa gives a fascinating insight to her experience of undergoing treatment; both the positive and negative aspects. The book is not meant to be a scientific, rational account of someone who has been severely abused disclosing her experiences and this leading to a cathartic moment of insight and cure. Lisa describes that whilst intellectually understanding that she suffered abuse, she struggles with the conflict of accepting that she was abused by people she believed were caring or loving at the time. The book describes how difficult it can be to overcome the resistance to change. Lisa’s account of her treatment illustrates that whilst insight is obviously important in getting better the process of being cured and being content is much more complex and tortuous.
The book also provides great insight into the experience of being a psychiatric patient; particularly as an inpatient on a busy ward. She describes how care was or was not provided. As a consultant psychiatrist, I did not always know what really happened in the ward at night times and weekends when there were fewer senior staff around. Her account was of such significance that it became required reading for senior managers in our mental health organisation. Lisa was also asked by the Chief Executive to offer advice about the nursing care and organisation for a new all-female ward. This illustrates the importance of her account of her experiences.
The book is also a very personal account from Lisa. I may disagree with some of her understanding or interpretation of events. The value of the book comes from her honesty in writing what she experienced and believed at the time. The reader has the opportunity to hear Lisa’s voice over the years; her struggles to unearth the truth about her life. It is not a simple story with an easy conclusion; it is all the more powerful and realistic for that. It will obviously be of interest to people who have suffered abuse in their own lives but also to a wider audience of anyone interested in understanding how an intelligent young woman can be seduced by abusers and the huge struggle to undo the harm caused.

About the author

Lisa WB was born in Leicestershire in the 1960's and has remained in close proximity to the area where she grew up. She is happily married to Patrick who is from Switzerland, and they have two children and many animals including alpacas, rescued billy goats and poultry.
A Fine Line is her first published book and it has received enormous praise from the medical world. The ebook version has been a bestseller for over 6 years in several categories.
Lisa has achieved a (1.1) First Class (Honours) Psychology degree, and hopes it will help give further insight to child abuse in her next book. She also gained a Counselling Diploma with Distinction. The Government website The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills were so impressed with Lisa's achievements they asked her to be a role model for adult learning and Lisa is helping to film a video about education for adults. Lisa is keen to promote the fact that having a disability does not mean you cannot achieve your goals.
Lisa has also published the sequel to A Fine Line A Balance to Survive.
The Survival ebook by Lisa WB has also been a best seller in several genres on Amazon.
The medics and police state that Lisa has survived against the odds, Lisa is passionate to show that people who have survived trauma can live normal lives. She believes that it is through reading books like A Fine Line and other true experiences, that people can gain insight which may lead to better understanding and support. This has been endorsed by leading professionals in the medical world.
Lisa is also passionate that care for the mental health in the future is regulated and that the people who have power do not take unjust advantage at any opportunity.
A Fine line A Balance to Survive was praised by many professional medical bodies and leading medical individuals, and was No 1 in many categories on Amazon in the ebooks rankings for over a year. It was also recommended as a reading book for staff who worked in the Leicestershire mental health teams.Despite the numerous letters of thanks and acknowledgments from survivors and professionals that deal with mental health, such as child abuse solicitors, prison officers, and relatives of survivors, the book never received a lot of recognition form the public media. Lisa is sure that this is to do with the time it was published (2010) and the stigma that surrounded mental health.
Lisa would like to thank everyone who has read her books and hopes that other survivors will share their accounts so that the more awareness about child abuse will introduce better management and also allows other survivors to be able to relate to some of the experiences. This also introduces insight for the professionals who manage child abuse cases. In the future Lisa hopes that the stigma surrounding mental health will decrease as people start to learn more and gain valuable insight that will help others have a brighter future.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 September 2014An Awesome book. . .
I read Lisa's first book, and was dumb-struck.
So, when I learned she was publishing a second, I simply couldn't wait to get my hands on it..... and I'm so glad I did.
She continues to be an inspiration to us all, and that inspiration is clearly recognised within her written word.
This book is a "must read" for everyone. It doesn't matter what walk of life you come from, you will get something out of this book.
I was lucky enough to be able to receive a signed copy of her first book, "A Fine Line - A Balance to survive", and read that, as I did this one, in one sitting.
The, sometimes hard, read had me on the edge of my chair and the tears rolling down my cheeks, (please bear in ind - I'm a shaven-headed, tattooed 46 year old!).
If you choose to read this and haven't yet read the first, I urge you to do so first.
I take immense pleasure in giving this five stars - well done Lisa, and thank you so much for sharing. . .
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 October 2013This truly inspirational sequal really does demonstrate that there can be 'a way back from the dark'. It's an example of winning the fight to keep moving on, to keep breathing, to stay alive when so many would give up and have given up. The insight the writer gives into the mind's struggle to survive the traumas inflicted on us is invaluable. 'The Survival' and the first book 'A Fine Line' are a must read for anyone working within mental health or who knows someone with mental health issues to try and understand those struggling and help those who are fighting to survive. Written with honesty and openess, Lisa WB's strength, courage and inner beauty shines through the book. I'm sure this book will be inspirational and of help and support to those who have suffered abuse, it certainly has for me. Thank you Lisa WB.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2014Interesting insight in a traumatised person's mind and reflex reactions when they revisit past trauma. Makes you wonder sometimes why she put up with some situations, the trade-offs and why she went back for more. Still a fascinating read. Makes me also wonder if it is always a good thing to make people face past traumas.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2014"The Survival" answers so many questions which I asked myself when reading Lisa's first book. She describes clearly and with feeling how she gradually gained insight and understanding of her traumas and coping behaviour through her ongoing therapy with a dedicated psychiatrist. Her humility and bravery, honesty and resilience are demonstrated In all she writes. The huge struggle she has made to come to terms with her 'lot' and to overcome the effects of her early experiences together with the descriptions of her treatment in the psychiatric units are written down in a way that will I am sure enrich all those people who read the book from whichever perspective they come. It is a book which holds attention, creates anticipation and ends with hope.
