Love and Decay, Volume One Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 945 ratings

Zombies- as if that wasn’t enough to ruin any girl’s dream of a happily ever after.

A vaccination gone oh so wrong and a huge portion of the world’s population was turned into Zombies. Reagan Willow is forced out of her home when her parents become casualties of the horrid Zombie Apocalypse. With the help of her best friend Haley, they’ve become somewhat of experts on surviving the dangers of a world thrust into chaos and decay. Reagan and Haley are on a vague mission to find somewhere safe to live out the remainders of their terrifying life when they stumble upon the Parkers, a pack of brothers that seem to have the survival thing down in a much more efficient and successful way than Reagan could ever have imagined.

Soon the Parkers become more to Reagan than just traveling companions and more than friendship starts to develop between her and Hendrix, the second oldest brother. But at the end of the world, nothing can be as simple as life and death. Now, Reagan is going to have to schedule falling in love between hunting and surviving. Hopefully she can last long enough to find out if true love can still exist when everything else has started to fall apart.

I have been a fan of YA/dystopian novels for quite a while now, so when my kindle recommends something, more often than not I give it a go. Sometimes it works out well, sometimes poorly, but this? This is beyond what I could have expected! The story sucks you in straight away, the characters are the right balance between classic end of the world survivalists and a regular person- something you'd expect after they'd faced such a world for two years, but a detail often missing from books where two females would either be portrayed as defenceless and boy-reliant, or hardened SAS style warriors. Rachel Higginson brings you to genuinely care about these characters, explains things that might have you wondering, and really creates the perfect picture of a violent and desperate world. Yes, there are grammatical errors, things that should have been picked up on in the editing process, but who cares?! When a story is this compelling (I literally read this and volume one episodes seven to twelve in less than 24 hours!) you just don't care about petty things- like a feeder, I am consumed by my need for more, Rachel Higginson!

I am in love with this series!

The action, the romance: it's perfect reading for me.

I'm loving the whole Hendrix and Reagan romance. And Haley and Nelson are quite cute too.

There's just one thing spoiling this and that's the addition of the annoying, whiney Tyler. She needs a good dose of living outside sheltered accommodation and with the gang I think she'll get that. Maybe the animosity between her and Vaughan will lead to something and she'll chill out a little.

With her being a recent addition, she hasn't made me mark down the book yet but if she doesn't stop her whining I'll be petitioning for her demise :/

I LOVE Higginson's work! Love and Decay has to be one of my favourite series of ALL TIME! The characters are very real and believable and you really identify their personalities which is something Higginson does with all characters throughout all her series. I would say if you're a YA reader you NEED to read this series and also her other works. She has a way of drawing you in from the first page which I find a lot of authors can't do!

Totally in love with this series!

It is okay but a bit boring. The characters are not very likeable and when the story is from the eyes of a different character nothing really changes in personality so you can't differentiate easily without being told. Its a bit generic in the sense of 'girl meets boy, they fall in love in a zombie apocolypse' way and I started to count how many times the words "death & decay" were mentioned. Throw in some 'damsel in distress, oh look I was saved by an inexplicable event' its just the same story I've read a thousand times. Its great for people over 13 but under 20 especially with the 'trying to hard for sexual tension' moments which also got boring. Was going to buy the entire series before I noticed there was a massive cash in after Season 1 and every episode is sold seperatly for season 3.. If you want to read this, by all means get the first one for free, don't bother with the rest as they are all the same.

I am a total fan of this series and of Rachel, I got the first episode as a free download and then BAM I was hooked and I fell in love with the Parker brothers.. Hendrix has ruined me for real life men but I don't care lol. I purchased each of the episodes as they came out because I was too impatient to wait for the volumes to be released and I intend to do this for season 4 that's soon to be released. If you're looking for a zombie fix like I was ten you've found it, however you also get some mean kick arse fight scenes, some swoon worthy males and love stories that don't overshadow the whole zombie apocalypse and some amazing twists that you don't see coming... to sum it up but the entire series you won't regret it :)

Such a good book! Not particularly original but very captivating.

Beautifully crafted in the sense that the chapters that scare you most are the ones with the rival human groups, not most of the zombie scenes. I find it fascinating that it is the acts of man that are so horrific rather than these monsters whose only instinct is to feed on human flesh.

Needs some major editing. Lots of spelling mistakes, missing words and awkward sentences but overall it's fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance + Zombies = Action!
Reviewed in the United States on 1 August 2015
    EPISODE 1

This story killed it! With it’s modern setting and fresh style of writing, the gore evens out and the action isn’t trying hard, if you know what I mean.

I’m so looking forward to episode 2!

    EPISODE 2

Okay. So the boys are hot and even that even the youngest will be the subject of my drool.

This episode is a good sequel and gives a nice flow to the story. It also had me giggling shamelessly in public, which I don’t usually do.

However, there are bore-spots in it and the thrill is somehow less focused. I started the story high with action but now it’s turning to a romance novel.

    EPISODE 3

Okay. So things are getting sexier and horrible and adventurous and scary and s***ty and smelly and really really sexy.

Have I said one of the bloodbaths had me almost pop-eyed?

Though really, I root for Vaughan. He’s my type.

    EPISODE 4

This side of Haley’s perspective is amazing. I love it that there’s a break from all the love triangle and tension between Vaughan and Hendrix, though they’re not really fighting or anything.

    This is a refreshing episode.

    EPISODE 5

Now this is action at it’s finest!

The author made an easy flow of story that made me picture it in my head like I’m watching a movie.

Pros: The addition is pretty exciting! I have this feeling that I’m gonna love-hate Tyler. I already like Miller by the way.

Cons: I think it’s too early for Reagan to choose between the Parkers. It’s like the author’s pacing it up and it doesn’t really match the time needed to fall for someone you only knew for a month.

    EPISODE 6

I’ll make some amendments first. If I’ll ever love Tyler, it’s not yet in this episode.

The climax is great to end this season. It has this dreadful finality that had my insides in knots and my heart racing.

The last episode in the first season started slow I practically skimmed through it. It also has a full-on emotional middle part that I just had my eyes scan over it.

However, compared to episode five, this one’s lamer. The intensity of the previous episode is much better than this. The way it ended is very anticlimactic. It had me thinking that ending it high, like maybe a cliffhanger’s gonna leave the readers antsy to get to the next season. This season finale can just be an ending to the whole story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Walking Dead for the CW crowd
Reviewed in the United States on 10 January 2014
This is like The Walking Dead for the CW crowd. Zombie gore with a dash of college age behavior. Fun. This series is written as a series of episodes. Each episode contains a complete story. However, the overall story continues on to the next one much like in a tv show.

The main character Reagan is 20 but was an 18 year old in high school when the zombie apocalypse happened. Incidentally, the cause of the apocalypse? The cure for Herpes. Priceless. In some ways Reagan still acts like an immature 18 year old. But it's refreshing to see a strong female protagonist who is also conscious of life without a razor or make-up. Why is it that strong females in books have to be cold and clinical? Reagan is strong but also exudes warmth and fun.

The editing in this series is not so good. At times it was frustrating. The wrong words can really screw up a sentence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Netflix-like binge of great episodic reading!
Reviewed in the United States on 9 February 2014
In the world of entertainment, I like television, but I will ALWAYS choose reading a book first. This set of serials gives me the best of both worlds. Each episode is action packed, full of humour, drama, and that touch of romance (or sexual tension). Honestly, they are so good and addicting, I just love the rollercoaster ride each episode takes you on. Reagan is a fabulous protagonist -- spunky, sassy, strong. And the rest of the cast of characters just round things out nicely -- each bringing something a bit different to the eclectic group. Reading through this volume 1 was actually my second time through each of these 6 episodes, and it was nice not to have to wait between each one (since they are so addicting). I also ended up enjoying the Haley episode in the middle MORE the second time through. The first time through I missed Reagan, but having all the episodes in one volume, I knew I would be getting more Reagan later, so it was nice to have a glimpse into Haley's head, and into her own relationship.

If you have a problem with patience (like me), then I highly recommend waiting for these volumes. I LOVE the episodic nature of this series, but at the same time I prefer the Netflix-like binging that I get from reading 6 episodes in a row without waiting. Can't WAIT to see where it goes!!
