GALLASILL: gripping supernatural horror fiction Kindle Edition

3.6 out of 5 stars 106 ratings

A thrilling and spooky tale, perfect for a dark and stormy night in...

In the bleak Northumberland town of Gallasill, legend has it that the hanging of an innocent man seven generations ago left a curse on the two feuding local families involved.

Always fascinated by this folklore about her hometown, Gallows Hill, academic Sarah Charlton discovers, despite her father’s insistence to the contrary, she is a direct descendant of the figures in the haunting story.

Having always sensed a presence on the old farm on the hill, Sarah gradually uncovers the shocking truth about Gallasill and her family.

But she soon realises she is not the only one with a personal stake in the story. Will she be able to question her own rational disbelief in the supernatural to save herself, or will the curse renew itself for generations to come?

"Really, really spooky" Thomas McCarthy
"This chilling ghost story had me gripped from start to finish" Ann Abrams
"A finely crafted contemporary ghost story, reads like a thriller. Brilliant!" Greg Best

If you enjoy GALLASILL, you'll love the author's other horror story, THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING. Also try Martyn's new crime fiction series which introduces DI Penelope Darling in IN THE FAMILY and continues with MEN IN SUITS.

"Gallasill: The True Story of Gallows Hill" is a wonderfully eerie tale. It has it all; a centuries old murder and hanging, a family curse and family secrets. It is a fast paced, tense read that was hard to put down. I look forward to reading more by Martyn Taylor.

This story kept me intrigued and looking forward to by nightly read. It was just spooky enough without rewarding me with a sleepless night. It is beautifully written in some parts but in others the writing style jarred a little, although not enough to be a problem. Martyn is clearly an accomplished writer with a fertile imagination. I found myself easily visualising scenes through his descriptive writing.

Poor writing in terms of character & plot. Why on earth would a so called, intelligent history expert not think of looking at the ancestry in the first place? And what WAS going on with the hugely unbelievable dysfunctional family of Lord Somebody or Other - and why would this so called intelligent person stay the night? I became so cross with this book that I gave up completely. Which is a rare thing for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars AN EXCITING, ENJOYABLE READ!

I was hooked from the beginning with the love story and the murder of one and the hanging of the other. Two centuries pass as the families are still trying to cope from the curse of these two happenings. I got bogged down with the aristocrat and his crazy family and really saw not much to do with the plot there. I got tired of the spoiled attitude of the main female character, but guess she needed some spunk to get her through what she was to be going through after her father's death. The author did seem to prolong getting into the meat of the story thereafter, but I totally did enjoy it when it picked up and started to go for it! It was a very good ghost/thriller story, with some present day killings along the way. The ending was not rushed, nor did it seem artificial, but was well worth hanging in there for the intriguing conclusion. I plan to read any other book I can find by Martyn Taylor. Great story!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting

The story drew me in within the first pages. I enjoyed the premise of the story and would have given it more stars if only a few things were improved. All the drama, death and chaos, leads to the big moment...releasing the first to get afterlife. And all the main character has to do is say ' go' and the ghost does?!? That was so understated for the grand finale. I'm also not sure why the author introduced included the zany Abernathy family. First, they were so bizarre, I really almost stopped reading. The only one that matters was the husband do why drag the reader through the craziness of the others. They never appear in the story again, so it's a lot of reading for nothing. Overall an intriguing historical story.
