It's been a while since I handed out a 5* review - so here we go. Sabre is an attorney with a hand full of children's services cases on - and JP is a Private Investigator she works with. The book pretty much starts with Sabre's ex parte meeting with a judge (mentioned in the blurb) and has several storylines running through it at once, one for each of the cases she's working on.

One thing I liked was that when a chapter referred to a case - it started with a summary of the characters in the case and what had happened. Although you didn't need it once you got to about the halfway mark - it was really helpful in the beginning of the book.

There is minimal violence - most of the action being investigative work, meetings at family homes and court scenes.

The little niggles? I didn't like the name Sabre. Never heard of it (as a woman's name) and I constantly read it as Sable (the nearest my brain could compute to it). I found this annoying as I mentally kept correcting myself back to Sabre.

I also found the US child services / court system confusing. Just had to let it go and focus on the important parts of the plot.

And the last one - there was a scene towards the end where a woman is watching a man cook and there is quite a lot of description around him chopping and preparing stuff. I skipped the pages completely. I'm not a cooking fan and didn't feel that this scene added anything to the book. But that's a personal thing of mine - taking too long to talk about preparing or eating food just bores me.

Other than that - enjoyed the book, liked the characters and the twists in the story kept me engrossed (although I'd worked much of it out at about the 75% mark). Would recommend.

Very interesting book; never read a book involving juvenile courts before , very informative. Slightly repetitive but still a good read

This book continued the varied stories about new children and their cases, but introduced a heading for each chapter reminding us of the characters in the case covered in the chapter - this was really useful with so much going on throughout the book.
There was also a new dimension to the Sabre:JP relationship, adding to the excitement.
Another must - read in the series order, I am going straight on to the next one now!

I just love this series. I have some catching up to do as I have only read two.

This was everything I expected from this author. How does Sabre cope with all the different cases and now a murder too!
She certainly needs all the help she can get from JP. The partnership between Sabre and JP is fascinating. Will they, won't they.

    A very enjoyable read.

I am totally enjoying this series.
They are well written and don't let you out of the pages until the story has finished. And lucky for me there are still quite a few for me to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can we talk about those endings.
Reviewed in the United States on 21 March 2025
This is my 4th Advocate book. They are great stories, and then
there is the ending. Like driving off the cliff in Thelma and Louise. She leaves you feeling totally unsatisfied. What drove me crazy with this book was adding all the case data at the beginning of chapters. That was irritating and overkill. But great stories.
