Top reviews from United Kingdom

Ok I don't normally write reviews but having seen an absence of such and considering how much I liked the book i'm going to give it a shot.

This is the second book in the series, which I have to say I enjoyed even more then the first. The story line progresses nicely from where the first left off and we see plenty of development of the main character, Naero. I don't want to go into too much detail, so I don't spoil anything, but suffice to say in this one Naero explores her Extrasensory abilities with plenty of clashes in which we get to see her make use of them.

Honestly, there are riveting battles, the plot line is good and the characters are engaging, there is absolutely no reason not to have bought this book and already started reading it.

I do love female protagonists, so took a chance on this. An enjoyable series which I look forward to following in future books. More please!

Have read several of the Naero stories and find them fascinating with just the right tempo without too convoluted a plot.
  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 November 2024
The story continues with the struggle of the Spacers against most of the corrupt Corps, which we later find out [spoiler] that it is being orchestrated by the remnants of an ancient alien enemy. In the meantime, Naero is reluctantly ordered to train with a highly unsympathetic mystic master who would prefer to kill her (out of his own fear).

The story came across as going from one relentless confrontation to the next, with so much going wrong time and time again. As such, it wasn't an easy or particularly uplifting or satisfying read. Thankfully, book 3 was better!

I bought this after reading the first book which was free. The first story wasn't perfect, but I thought I'd give the series the benefit of the doubt and bought the second book. I regret that now.

The story continues with the struggle of the Spacers against the Corps, and then on to a war against an alien foe. In the meantime, Naero is sent off to the planetary equivalent of a mountaintop to start her training.

I found the story relentlessly one tempo, probably because it is all written from Naero's point of view as she lurches from one confrontation to the next. Naero's powers become ridiculously over the top, so much so that I stopped engaging with the story because I found it tedious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic sci-fi and 'magical' powers!
Reviewed in Australia on 23 September 2016
Book number 2 in the Naero series. After the fairly straightforward space adventure themes of the first book, Elliott begins to incorporate the 'magical powers' elements that were hinted at earlier. 'Cosmic' and 'Mystic' powers go beyond the 'psyonic' powers mentioned in the first series and begin to set up a larger universe and purpose for the titular character of the novel to get involved with. A large portion of this book is essentially a rather violent and slightly abusive training montage, but Elliott manages to do such in a way that adds depth and meaning to the characters and retains a positive atmosphere throughout. This is a sci-fi series that is quite happy to blend elements of adventure and fantasy into a space setting and is far more concerned with epic fight scenes and interesting characters than believability or realism. Nonetheless, it is an exciting read and worth follow up and development in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Naero's Gambit by Mason Elliott is entertaining Sci-Fi which you don't want to stop reading once you begin.
Reviewed in the United States on 21 July 2016
Naero's Gambit by Mason Elliott is the 2nd book in his Space Clans Adventure series and is categorized as "Space Opera". It continues the story begun in "Naero's Run" and the adventure of a young "Spacer" female as she develops her hidden powers which result from alien data which was secretly stored on her DNA molecules. She learns to communicate with an internal entity called "Om" who is also apparently evolving and learning how to employ her alien data in her defense. However, Naero also recognizes she has a "Dark Force" within that she has limited control of and this concerns her a great deal. As a result she agrees to train with and be tested by the "Mystics" who have the power of life and death over her. Just as her three years of training comes to and end and her fate is to be decided, she gets a reprieve because of a massive invasion by aliens. She returns to her people and leads the fight which ultimately defeats the enemy but also causes her to unleash her Dark Force in her final fight resulting in massive enemy destruction and the disappearance of an entire planet. Afterwards, she again faces the judgment of the Mystics.

The plot and characters are combined into a very good and entertaining story. Besides the attractive heroine there are many characters that come alive in the story.
