About the author

Richard Gleaves never planned to be a novelist, but one Halloween he visited the real town of Sleepy Hollow and something bit him. He was standing in the Old Dutch Burying Ground, which according to legend is the site of the Horseman's burial, when he was struck by a story, fully formed, about the last descendant of Ichabod Crane returning to Sleepy Hollow.
Returning home, he started typing. The full tale (3 enormous novels) took over half a million words and three years to achieve. The Jason Crane Sleepy Hollow Trilogy was written largely on site as Richard returned over and over to the Hollow, walking around the modern town with a tape recorder-- rediscovering the haunts of Washington Irving, writing scenes at 2 a.m. while wandering the graves of the cemetery or dangling his legs off a broken colonial-era bridge deep in the woods.
Jason Crane's Sleepy Hollow adventure was an adventure for its author as well, taking him down into old aqueducts, to historic societies and Hudson Valley landmarks. The "young adult" tone of Rise Headless and Ride gave way to darker mysteries and more adult themes in Bridge of Bones and General of the Dead and an entire universe opened up. A universe of hidden witches, a Great Curse, Headless Horseman, family secrets, murder, ancestral fortunes, puzzle locks, young love, and persistent everyday evils, all braided together into a Halloween epic that's impossible to put down.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2018This is a really well written book... I have now read all three in the series and for someone who doesn't particularly read horror stories any more, I really enjoyed the whole saga. Writing is excellent and the story line has enough twists and turns to keep one engrossed. I didn't know much about the original Sleepy Hollow legend, having only seen the Johnny Depp film, and being a Brit, but this book reinvented it for me as well as letting me read the original tale. Brilliant. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed Sleepy Hollow
Thoroughly enjoyed Sleepy Hollow: Rise Headless and Ride. This story is just right- plenty of twists and supernatural turns without excessive violence and gore, which I feel is not necessary for a plot to be successful. Jason Crane is the main character who returns to Sleepy Hollow with his grandmother only to find he is a descendant of the original Ichabod Crane and all that entails. While he knows the legend, he doesn't let it rule his life and is just a little suspicious of Brom and his reasons for opening the crypt. The characters are well developed and the plot retains the readers interest to the very end. I was sorry when I finished this book and will definitely be looking for the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story and worth the read for "Legend" fans
So a disclaimer first. I am not an avid reader. I read books in clusters...like four or five of Tom Clancy's novels in the 90's, A few Dale Brown books in the early 2000's, and then Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons...that's about it since school. I enjoy movies too much and with two young kids now, not much time for reading. That said, I am a huge fan of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and I stumbled across this book on Thursday while checking out a wall post on Facebook from the town of Sleepy Hollow. I really am not that in to ghost or horror stories either, but I am sure, like many, I was captivated by The Legend when I was in elementary school in the early 70's and Disney's rendition helped to seal the deal. But growing up and living in coastal Georgia, there is not much additional exposure to Sleepy Hollow. Still, I have always loved the story and wanted/dreamed/imagined the story had some factual basis from that time period. I travel a good deal for work now, all over the country, but while I have visited most major city's numerous times, I never had visited New York City. Two years ago I had a business meeting that took me to New Jersey and I had to fly into La Guardia. Instead of flying in early to head into The City for my first visit...I flew in a day early to visit Sleepy Hollow.
It was February and just after a cold front had passed. Skies where crystal clear and about 8 inches of new snow was on the ground, but it was a beautiful day to drive though Tarry Town and into Sleepy Hollow. It was a few hours of a childhood dream coming true. I walked the snow covered grounds of the Old Dutch Church. Visited The Manor. Stopped by the building standing on what was believed to be the location of "Katrina's" home. Walked along Broadway, past Patriot's Park, crossed over the "new" bridge and into the cemetery. A trip like that makes The Legend come alive. Since my visit two years ago I have craved more stories about The Legend, but there is not much out there. I write all this to explain how thrilled I was to find this book this week. I downloaded the Kindle version on Thursday evening and finished it today. I really like what Gleaves has done. Re-imagined stories are all the rage these days, and this story does a nice job of fast forwarding 200 years and continuing The Legend. I will not turn this into a spoiler, but it was a great read. The character development was long, and this is the first of what I believe is a 6 book line. This book is a cliff hanger, but on the milder side. It doesn't end in the middle of the action, but it leaves the reader eager to see what is next for Jason (the main character). Two elements of the story seemed familiar. First, Jason is the last descendant of Ichabod Crane and he is a 16 year old high school student just moved to Sleepy Hollow and he is set to face the Horseman along with some of his high school classmates. That set up is almost identical to the set up in the movie The Hollow that came out several years ago. That said, Gleaves gets a pass because the story is not remotely close to the story of The Hollow...so don't think of it as a rip off, just kinda similar set up, but Gleaves has a much better developed story that is much more sophisticated. Also, there is a new Sleepy Hollow tv series starting this week and while the stories are definitely different, the Treasure that Gleaves writes about is very similar to the one I have seen in the previews for the new show. I just bring these up, well, because they stood out to me as I read this book.
So the verdict is simple, if you liked The Legend of Sleepy Hollow you should like this story. One reviewer wrote that this may be "the next Harry Potter"...really...I wouldn't go that far, but I would recommend this book and I applaud the job Richard Gleaves has done. Great read and actually would make for a great movie. This story is more true to the REAL Legend than the Johnny Depp movie. I am looking forward to the next installment...hopefully it will be out soon!! Nice job!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating modern re-imagining of the Sleepy Hollow tale
Okay this is a solid 4 if not 4 1/2 stars. I was pleasantly surprised. I started it just before Halloween because, well it is a retelling of Sleepy Hollow and I love that story. I just wish I wouldn't have been so busy so I could have finished it sooner. I wasn't sure about delving back into the teen supernatural world but Jason Crane won my attention and appreciation. He may be only 17 by the end of the book but he is a wonderful character. He is kind, loving, logical and respectful (for the most part). He has his moments of stupid teenage boy-ness but that is expected and he usually feels bad afterwards.
This is a re-imagining of the tale from the perspective of Ichabod's descendant. It takes place in the now and Jason is the last surviving Crane relative. We are brought to a modern day Sleepy Hollow where young Mr. Crane has been moved to against his will by his eccentric yet lovable grandmother. Honestly it is a crazy adventure from the very beginning. She takes him on excursions to get tombstone rubbings of his descendants.
I will say all of the characters are written fairly well and you are convinced to love or hate them. Eliza (grandmother) is adorable and funny. Hadewych is well hate-able. He is the Van Brunt descendant and I disliked him from the beginning. Valerie I didn't like at first but like her much more now. Joey is the best fictional best friend I've read in a while. I want to be his friend. Zef, ugh, you want to hate him but you know it's not all his fault. His dad (Hadewych) made him that way. Kate is relatable. She is a cute young woman but she is tough as nails. I prefer her with Jason over Zef for many reasons....reasons which I cannot say (read the book!). Of course there are other minor-ish characters to move the story along but these are the heart (or head) of the story.
I think you should give it a try. It is a series so be prepared for an open ending. But it is a fun book to read, albeit frustrating at times (poor Jason). It is entertaining but not overwhelming in details. It really is an imaginative modern retelling of the legend that is quite enjoyable so give it a go.

3.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this book
I wanted to like this book, I really did. And it had a lot of good things going for it -- a retelling of the Sleepy Hollow legend in modern times, a rather engaging protagonist, etc. What spoiled it for me were the impossible-to-believe reactions of the characters to situations. Time and again, something horrendous or seriously unpleasant would happen -- and yet a page or two later, everything would be more or less "business as usual." It felt to me as if the book needed another draft, ideally with a really good editor.
