Kick The Candle (Knight Games Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,086 ratings

Candle burn and cauldron bubble, I’m in a helluva lot of trouble!

Okay, so I’m a witch - a soul sorter - with a magical demon-slaying sword called Nightshade. Not complaining, but it’s wicked stressful. Not only is there an increase in supernatural activity in my ward, I’m being evicted from my new, sort-of- magically important house, breaking in a snarky new familiar, and trying to sort out my feelings for my metaphysically connected and immortal boyfriend Rick.

As if that’s not enough to send me running to the cupboard for comfort Pop Tarts, I’ve uncovered a plot by a local vampire coven to gain the power to control both the living and the dead. History is threatening to repeat itself and if I don’t get a handle on my role as Monk’s Hill Witch, it could cost me everything.

I appreciated the author giving the paranormal beings some different traits.
Kick The Candle is book two of the Knight Games series of paranormal romances and continues with the story of Grateful Knight, a nurse and a reincarnated witch. Paranormal beings have been increasing in the local area and Grateful and Rick, her guardian, have been exhausting themselves trying to deal with them all. With her new witchy powers Grateful conjures a familiar to help, but instead of a cat or an owl that she hoped for, she gets an ugly raven with attitude. Her romantic life is complicated by the jealous behaviour of Rick, and Logan, an ex-hospital patient. Meanwhile, she’s drugged and kidnapped from a party, only to discover that she is the supposed owner of a dark grimoire and several powerful dark beings want it. The problem is, Grateful knows nothing about the book or its whereabouts. Another fun book in this series, I like the fast pace and once more I appreciated the author giving the paranormal beings some different traits from some of the standard ones in this genre. I look forward to reading more in the series.

Although this reads a little like a young adult book, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the entire collection.

I have always loved the idea of being resurrected in different lifetimes and yet remembering the past ones, what an amazing concept!

The writing style is good though some of the terms are a little off, eg ...if he thought I would do it, he has another THING coming... rather than another THINK coming. Just a little annoyance which doesn't really detract from the story.

I absolutely loved these books. Nowadays I find it really hard to find a book that actually get a grip on me from the first chapter. Grateful Knight is actually a character that doesn't annoy you with doubts and low self-esteem as I came to read in so many books. Her story is captivating with every single character in both books. Very good work. Pleased that I accidentally came across these books. Happy reader here :)

Wow! I loved this book, got totally lost in Gratefuls world once again. To be honest the beginning was a bit slow and predictable and I almost didn't pick it up again! But I'm so glad I did! Full of action, drama and emotion. This was a great read! Can't wait for the next one!

After reading the first book I had to read the next. The story pulled me in it was so intriguing. The plot was so full,I loved the intricacy of all the past lives and the effect it had on Grateful, not to mention the love story that simmered away throughout.Awesome read.

    3.5 stars

The second book in the Knight Games series is heavier on the Supernatural elements and much less focused on the amorous life of Grateful and there are far less toe-curling passages to endure this time around. We do get to meet a few new supes - including a Werewolf detective and a fairy bordello owner. We also get to find out more about the burgeoning Vampire community set up close to the Hellmouth that it is Grateful's task to guard.

I was disappointed to note that one of the themes of the book (Grateful losing the graveyard house) was also repeated here. We've already done this one and there was never any actual fear that the mysterious Mr Nekomata would succeed in ousting Grateful from her attic. It just felt a bit like a lazy plot point to try and dredge up more tension - not really necessary when you factor kidnapping and torture.

On the whole Grateful is a lot easier of a person to like in this book, maybe because she is away from Rick for big parts of it and she seems to think more with her head than other, less salubrious organs. The plotting is generally tighter and conversations seem to have a point to them, even if it doesn't seem terribly important at the time. The fictional world the characters inhabit is fleshed out a lot more and is starting to feel solid and to have a good sense of it's own mythology.

All this gives me hope for the third installment of the series. I can't honestly say that I am waiting for it with bated breath but I am much less trepidacious than I was after the first book.

I must say I loved this story. To finish this book in one day should tell you something. I could not put it down! All the mythical creatures you can think of are in this book. The story flowed beautifully from the first book to this one. I will not tell you how the story goes dear reader... You must embark on this road by yourself.

Although I do wonder if Poe got his Christmas wish. I will be looking for more books from this talented writer. I'm looking forward to more from Genevieve Jack in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read!

I lost a lot of sleep reading this book, as I loved it so much! There was much more excitement, mystery, action and some new personalities introduced into Grateful’s journey that made this read fabulous.

Grateful is trying to get up to speed on all she needs to know as the Monks Hill witch, even using technology such as a smart phone, to help her learn how to use her powers. I enjoyed this part of it actually. Most of the books that I’ve read with witches in it, the methods that they use to conjure up or note down spells is very medieval by today’s standards. So it was a part that was refreshing and easy to relate to, because who doesn’t use their phone for something other than calling?

The main characters Grateful and Rick have grown nicely as individuals and as a couple after struggling with their relationship, and have settled into their roles for each other and their responsibilities to by the end of the book. Grateful’s familiar – Poe is a fun new character. He’s a Raven and guides her with his sarcastic wit but he also keeps her grounded. He even made me cheer at times.

We are also introduced to a lot of new characters and the evil lurking around the towns that they work and live in. They all have different agenda’s in obtaining this secret weapon and the battles that are waged in order to get this make this read exciting.

I enjoyed the writing style and the great pace it was set at. With a strong female protagonist who has a sexy immortal boyfriend and evil to battle, the stage is set and, wow I loved it. I’ll be waiting with bated breath to read the next book in this series.

    5 stars!

I thought Genevieve Jack's first Grateful Knight book was good but Kick The Candle is even better. The action builds until you find yourself holding your breath – seriously, the ending will rock your world. And the romance? Swooning here... My favourite bits involve Poe, the witch's witty familiar, a big sarcastic raven who gives Grateful a chance to show off her funny, human side. Great series – cannot wait for book three!
