Really enjoyed this - especially the way the author develops the characters. The main character has flaws but you totally understand why and I particularly liked the new relationship between him and his daughter. The plot was good- for once I didn't guess the culprit and I read through the book in one sitting because I needed to know! A great start to a series.

This was an excellent police procedural. I haven't previously heard of this author but was impressed with this first Frank Harper book. Harper reminds me a lot of Lawrence Blocks wonderful Matt Scudder which can only be good. Harper is a man a little past his prime. Retired from the police , divorced and drinking too much he's not really in a good place. He's come to Coppers Mill to try to reconcile with his adult daughter and the grandson he's never met. His arrival coinsided with the kidnap of two little girls. This was something which brought back unhappy memories as his last experience of a child kidnap had not ended well. The last thing he wanted was to get involved but the local police were struggling to get anywhere and turned to him to help. A well written book. It captured very well the small town atmosphere and Harper is a well drawn character and a great addition to the crime genre.

Frank Harper, another alcoholic ex cop, here we go again I thought as I began to read this novel. As an ex cop myself of 32years I have known many, worked with many, wept for some who took the easy but final way out. You can’t do this job without being affected. But I was wrong. At first I didn’t really like Harper or his attitude to life. But I think I understood him in a way perhaps I had never understood a mythical character before. I feel this was due to the sensitive treatment of the character by the author. I now feel that Greg Enslen completely understands his character in a way not many authors do. As I read on I felt sympathy for Harper and began to understand where he was coming from. I began to feel that I liked him and could have befriended such a person and even worked well with him. The characters in this novel are sensitively drawn and I particularly liked deputy Peters. Eager to learn, respectful of experience and showing great potential. The plot was good and developed nicely with a good climax. By the end of this book I could not wait to get to know Harper further and I immediately purchased the second and third books which I read immediately. Currently looking forward to the fourth book. This book is the real deal, not to be rushed but savoured like a fine wine. If you don’t read this book you will be the poorer for it. Keep em coming. Gerard Murray

Good, standard, fare. Ex cop turned maverick can't resist sticking his nose in local events with a criminal edge. Imagine a B movie matinee and you've got the gist. Not terrible, not great, just good enough.

Two girls are kidnapped and a ransom demanded. Visiting ex cop Frank Harper gets reluctantly involved in the case when the small town police struggle. Well paced police procedural with a convincing central character. Frank is clear that these cases often end appallingly badly. However, this book doesn't convey any sense of dread, mainly because the kidnappers are underwritten and the plot ticks along without any of the horrific blunders or random violence that you'd find if it was written by - say - Elmore Leonard. It's an engrossing and quite well written story, but it didn't make my heart beat faster.

This was a great read and I couldn't put it down. Read long into the night.
Liked the lead character, the flawed Frank, an ex policeman. He has an alcohol problem and I liked the fact that he didn't immediately stop drinking completely and struggles with the problem throughout the book. Storyline as about two children being kidnapped and held for ransom in small town America. The local police force are out of their depth and the FBI agent sent to help appears to be incompetent. Frank, who has experience with this type of crime, is persuaded, albeit reluctantly, to help. He is visiting the town to try and make peace with his estranged daughter and this developing relationship is well written. The crime story itself is full of suspense and keeps you guessing until almost the very last chapter.

Hope Frank appears in more books and I will certainly look out for more novels by Greg Enslen.

A decent read with good, well - developed characters.

It was a tiny bit slow at times with the most of the action happening in the last quarter of the book but still an enjoyable read that kept me interested

I had nothing to lose when this book popped up on the kindle free offer list a while ago. I have experienced some truly dire books this way, and a few gems.

    This is the latter.

The plot is intriguing, with enough red herrings and dead ends to keep the reader guessing while they get to know the characters. I figured out who the secondary baddy was about half way through, but I had no idea about either the motive or the primary baddy until the final denouement. Just the way I like it.

Unusually for the free Kindle offer books, I only spotted a single error which slipped past the editing process. The detectives kept pouring over the files instead of poring over them.

On the whole, an excellent read and I shall now go and have a look at the author's other titles.

If you like a story that will keep you guessing, this is just perfect for you. Well developed characters and interactions that feel all too real. Frank is a man that will have you rooting for him. He knows that he is far from perfect, yet, he is working on fixing his mistakes. A must read.

I really enjoyed this first novel I've read by Greg Enslen. I will certainly purchase the rest of the Frank Harper series, the character is a very likable and somewhat broken retired policeman. I found this book and the mysterious facts surrounding the double kidnapping of two little girls a book that was hard to put down.
