Julia Gousseva has been writing since she was a little girl in Moscow, Russia, when her grandmother gave her an old leather-bound journal with yellowed pages. The first half of the journal was filled with stories and poems that her grandmother wrote when she was still in school. “Now, it’s your turn to continue writing stories,” she said.

Years later, Julia revised and published some of the stories she wrote in that journal as "Twelve Months of a Soviet Childhood," a collection of short stories that portray a magical and innocent time oblivious to political regimes and problems. Her grandmother, a typical Russian babushka, is a prominent character in the book. Babushka is taking care of children, of her beloved red roses, and is proper in all respects. Thus, when the two little girls in her care end up in a precarious situation in the middle of Gorky Park, babushka has to compose herself before taking decisive action.

Julia was born and raised in Russia when it was still a part of the Soviet Union, and even today Russia remains a mystery not only to the West, but to its own people as well. Julia’s history professors referred to Russia as a country with unpredictable past because every time a new leader came to power, all history books were revised and rewritten. Many of Julia’s stories are set against the backdrop of Russia’s dramatic history.

In addition to being a writer, Julia teaches a variety of critical thinking, critical reading, and writing classes. She loves Russian literature, especially Russian folklore and its unique characters: Baba Yaga the Russian Witch, the magical Firebird, Leshi the Woodsprite, and many others. To help today’s kids enjoy the ancient wisdom of Russian fairy-tales, Julia wrote Adventures of Alex and Katie series where two American kids travel into the world of Russian fairy-tales through a magical fireplace.

Julia and her family live in the American Southwest.

Although you would be forgiven for considering this a children's book I think every adult should revisit the tales of their childhood.
This short tale is written in the style of a traditional fairy tale and shares all the magic of the kind of characters and situations you would expect to discover therein.
This story moves quickly and easily taking you back into a world of innocent childhood and just as with any traditional tale there is a lesson to be learned for everyone. Here it is that friendship is much more important to happiness than wealth.
You will not fail to enjoy this beautifully written but simple story.

This is the second adventure of Alex and Katie in these reworkings of old Russian tales by Julia Gousseva. The story is not only entertaining and beautifully written, but it has the magic and wishes that all children love to hear about, as my son when I read him this ebook. We were both happy to have spent time in this magical world with Alex and Katie, and are looking forward to another adventure with them.

Last we saw Alex & Katie they were lost in an enchanted world. Now. they are back and onto their second adventure. This time around, they are off to save a young man, but they get a bit sidetracked and meet some colorful characters along the way.

5 stars to a fairy tale where characters truly create the ending.

The Lollipop carries on where Firebird ended and we find ourselves again in Julia Gousseva's wonderful world of stories within stories. Here, Alex, 10, and his sister Katie, 9, discover that they have the power to create stories themselves and not only that, to change the endings, even change history, depending on their own actions. Is it magic or something more subtle and esoteric?

What Ms Gousseva is doing is providing morality tales wrapped in the magician's cloak of fairy tales and building an invisible bridge from the cold steppes of her own Russian childhood to the warm deserts of Arizona, her new home and that of her children.

This time, we are treated to a talking fish who grants the shocked angler, Emelya, three wishes if he is let off the hook. The wishes granted, Emelya finds himself falling in love with Maria - the Tsar's daughter and winding up in prison. As Alex and Katie get drawn into the narrative, they discover that they have the power to become part of the story and save Emelya - and in ways that teens and pre-teens will find as thoroughly intriguing as I did.

Gousseva's characters embark upon a half-Narnian, half Russian adventure that is perfect for reading out loud to children, and entertaining enough that they'd want to read it by themselves. She has a sweet, brilliant voice and lively characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lollipop!

The Lollipop: Adventure Two by Julia Gousseva is a wonderful story that is excellently written and fun. Who doesn't like to write their own ending in a story?

In traditional fairytale style, the author has created a marvelous book that all will enjoy. The tale has an ending, but the children in this story get to create it when the words disappear from the pages.

From the talking fish to the great Leshi and many more wonderful characters, this story is full of inspirational ideas in how to deal with problems and the creative solutions are very simple.

I love this short read for all ages and highly recommend it. 5 stars for The Lollipop: Adventure Two

5.0 out of 5 stars Vibrant Russian-Inspired Fantasy

I really enjoyed this book. Author Julia Gousseva writes a spellbinding fantasy story about siblings Alex and Katie, who travel through a painting to a vibrant world full of Russian-inspired myth and magic.

The children trek to the tsar's palace to rescue Emelya, the poor fisherman whom the tsar's daughter loves. On the way, they receive help from an unlikely source, a strange goat-like creature named Leshi.

Young readers will be on the edge of their seats as they follow Alex, Katie, and Leshi on their wild ride and discover the significance of Leshi's rooster-shaped lollipops. The book has all the elements of a great adventure, and it's also very humorous. I also love the lessons at the end. Highly recommended for kids!
