- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 March 2015Penny has always dreamed of having an unforgettable wedding with everything she ever imagined, including a big princess dress and flying doves. So when her long-term boyfriend Mark finally proposes, Penny's over the moon and can't wait to start planning everything. However, when she accesses their wedding fund she's shocked to only find a few thousand pounds in the account. Penny knows she might have played a few too many online bingo games in the hopes of adding more money to the fund, but she never expected things to be this bad. Penny knows she needs to find help with her gamble addiction, but at the same time she also knows she can't tell Mark about their slightly altered wedding budget. She decides to come up with a plan of 'Don't Tell the Groom', which provides her with the chance to organise their perfect wedding without Mark knowing the details. All she has to do is stay within budget and make sure no one discovers what is really going on...
I can't believe it took me so long to pick up one of Anna Bell's books, because I absolutely loved 'Don't Tell the Groom' from start to finish! The book is a great romantic comedy and just what a chick lit novel is supposed to be like. Penny is such a great and funny heroine whom I couldn't help but warm to from the very first page. She has managed to get herself in quite a situation, and I loved seeing her tackling her problems and making the best of things. I think many readers will be able to relate to her in one way or another, just like I did while reading the book. I really like novels about brides and weddings and this one had quite an original and entertaining storyline, focusing on the idea of a budget wedding, which I really enjoyed.
I loved Anna Bell's writing style; this book was so comfortable and easy to read, and the writing is well-paced and funny in just the right places. I don't often find books I really can't put down, but I just wanted to continue reading about Penny's adventures. I'm just incredibly excited this book is actually the first of a series and I can't wait to read the other two parts that have already been released. Overall, 'Don't Tell the Groom' is an amazingly enjoyable, fun, easy-to-read romantic comedy read; a book which chick lit fans simply have to pick up, you won't be disappointed!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 February 2022I enjoyed this book. The situation the main character found herself in was relatable and i thought the author handled the gambling addiction stuff well.
I also found it interesting reading about how Penny was trying to save money with her wedding. Penny's arc was well done and the side characters were also enjoyable, there wasn't a character I disliked.
It was also refreshing to read something that wasn't full of drama, the book felt as though it had just the right amount to keep the book interesting. I will definitely get rhe other books in the series when I fancy something light hearted again.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 January 2013Having read Anna Bell's previous books - Universally Challenged and Millie and the American Wedding- I read this over Christmas and it didn't fail to be uplifting! So refreshing to see a story unfold which gets to the heart of what a wedding day should really be about - the vows. I really liked the central character, Penny and grew very fond of her. There were several times I actually laughed out loud and read bits out to my family. I hope Penny continues to have more adventures - maybe when she has a baby...?
Great book, highly recommended for a winter afternoon with hot chocolate or a summer read around the pool.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 August 2013I did enjoyed this story but you could tell how it was going to go from the beginning. Girl tries to make money playing bingo in the hope that she will have a fairy tale wedding. She doesnt realise she isnt actually winning but losing money and before she knows it she has lost a massive chunk of her wedding money. Decides not to tell the groom but to do the wedding on the cheap and it turns out fantastically. If only it was like that in real like! She appears to have everything all the way through the book until the end when her boyfriend runs off as he thinks she has done the dirty on him but in the end he comes back and they have a dream wedding on the cheap and live happily ever after.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 May 2014the story revolves around a girl who has played on-line bingo and lost the major part of her wedding savings. She is too ashamed to tell her fiancé so says she will organise the "wedding of her dream" by herself and surprise him. Quite entertaining, but her cut price solutions did seem to fall into place very easily. There was a deeper message (dangers of the internet, value of honesty) but this was kept light, and secondary to the wedding problems such as finding a cheap dress and venue. Big problem written lite.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2014This is a much better book then the presequel. I loved the fact that Penny had no idea Mark was about to propose when he did. There was a nice element of surprise in the whole thing.
In fact I found Penny quite grew on me unlike the first book although I did find some of what she did a bit cringe worthy like chasing after Mark after he walked out on her and also going ahead with the wedding rehearsal and wedding itself when the likelihood of Mark turning up was less then 50%.
I liked the whole wedding planning on a shoe string budget in 3 months (she was lucky she had 3 months I had to plan and organize mine in 6 weeks - thats stress for you!) and her learning you don't have to spend a fortune to have a lovely wedding and being with her partner was more important then the weddiing itself. Her step by step growth and planning of the wedding over three months had me gripped.
The only problem is I have a feeling now she has Mark back, she'll forget and go back to her old ways, although she is married now - she can't have and plan another wedding,! wonder how she will fill her time now? What will she spend time planning next? A baby? She seems like a woman who constantly needs to plan things.
Looking forward to 'Don't tell the Boss' which is being released sometime this year!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it
Although the way of getting married in England seems a bit strange to me, this book is so funny, witful and fresh. I had to buy all the followers also and I didn't regret reading a single page!
Chick-lit at it's best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice and funny
It's one of these stories where everything goes from bad to worse and you wonder how she can possibly make it right. Funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't tell the groom was more than i expected.
Excellent read, story provides a great opening an a suspenseful ending. Anna Bell gives the reader so much to think about as we wait to see the outcome of the wedding day. As Penny keeps her secret we see how Nan Violet suspects her of loving another not knowing that her secret was gambling.
