The Black Parade Kindle Edition
Two years ago, Jordan accidentally shot and killed a Seer: a person who can see, hear, and talk to ghosts with unfinished business. Her crime came with a hefty price, too. She has two years to help a hundred souls cross over to the afterlife or her soul is bound for hell. Tough break.
As if that weren’t bad enough, two days before her deadline a handsome pain-in-the-ass poltergeist named Michael strolls into her life. His soul is the key to her salvation, but the cost just might be more than she can handle. Solving his death puts her right in the crosshairs of Belial: a vain, bloodthirsty archdemon who won’t rest until she’s his slave. Can she rescue Michael and save her own soul, or will they both be dragged down into the clutches of the eternal black parade?
"I didn’t have to force myself to finish it. I finished it, because I wanted to, and I put the book I was reading and very much looked forward to aside, so I could read The Black Parade. There is a fine line between cliche and classic, and Black Parade stays just on the right side of that line. We have all the traditional staples of UF: the secret world of angels, demons, and ghosts; an orphan heroine, who will fight against overwhelming odds to help other people but is terrified to let people close; a hot angel; a frightening seductive demon; magic, action, fate of the world hanging in the balance. This doesn’t just dip a toe into the stereotypical UF land, it takes a swan dive into the deep water, and I should’ve bounced off of it, but for some reason this worked for me." -Ilona Andrews, Author of the Kate Daniels and Innkeeper urban fantasy series, March 19, 2018

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2014Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis is a good, well-written book which has enough of the standard urban fantasy tropes to make it familiar (angels, demons, psychics, ass-kicking) and enough of its own personality to make it interesting.
I particularly liked the character of Jordan, as she started strong and stayed strong, yet was still human enough to be realistic. Too often I read 'strong female characters' who go all mushy when the dominant male love interest shows up and takes over. That doesn't happen in the book, thank god for that. Breath of fresh air. I also loved how she didn't just swoon at the end when a certain thing is proposed, she gave it careful consideration before making a decision. A female character whose primary reason for living isn't finding a man or getting married! Hurray! This book shows how you can be vulnerable to and love someone without becoming a submissive idiot. More of this!
I also liked that while there were romantic elements, that wasn't the main feature of the story. I do like a bit a romance but am not a fan of 'romance books' per se, so this had just the right mix. Also, this author is very good at writing sexual tension. Sweeeet!
The only thing I thought was that a trick was missed by not letting us live through the experience of killing the Seer and Jordan's first steps in learning about her own powers and helping souls etc. We were just told about that in retrospect. It didn't spoil the story at all, I just think it would've been nice to go deeper into that. Perhaps there's a prequel in there- hint hint, author?
Overall- this is one of the better independently published urban fantasy books I have read, and I would recommend it. Go forth and read!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 October 2018Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed this book. This girl can write! I loved the chemistry and banter between the two main characters, and yes, I admit that I am biased because our hero was an emo rocker, but it didn't make a huge difference in the long term.
I'm not what you would call a religious person, so I wasn't overly familiar with all the archangels in the story from before, but I liked that angle to the story. The plot was action-packed and constantly moving forward, with enough emotions to balance it.
I'm notoriously bad with follow-through when it comes to series, but I will try to grab the next book in the series, simply because this series deserves my attention.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 April 2018Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis book is written in an interesting fashion. Its a series of novellas within a book. Each seems to start up where the last left off so I wonder if it was written as episodes.
The lead character is an interesting woman who has had a very hard some would say brutal life. She sees dead people and helps them move on to the afterlife. This is as a penance for accidentally killing an innocent man. Perhaps this is the reason I can't warm to the story, the penance seems harsh to me. The cast of characters includes archangels and demons and the basic story is about the fight of good over evil. Its well written and full of action, the lead characters are complex enough to feel real. I read it and thought it was OK but I won't be getting any more in the series.
It will appeal to anyone who likes paranormal thrillers with hunky angels and demons.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 March 2018Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI have enjoyed the first story of The Black Parade. Imaginable storyline, strong main character Jordan. I found the Angels compared to Jordan quite week, that's the only thing I didn't like about the story.
I would have liked to read more about the Ghosts she is or has helped, the information been cut short. But overall a good story.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 March 2014Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseAn urban fantasy tale of a girl who helps ghosts move on. Angels are involved and things get complicated. This was really good; different, with just the right mix of action, witty dialogue and plot twists. The constant pop culture references annoyed me after a while but that’s a minor complaint for such an original story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh
