I absolutely loved this book. Alright so it's never gonna be read as part of A level English Lit, but as far as apocalyptic entertainment of a zombie nature goes its most definitely the dogs proverbial body part. Set in Runcorn near Liverpool in the North of England, this book is full of British humour and at some points in the story I quite literally couldn't read my kindle app because I was laughing so much. The characters are great, if a little on the thin side, and the action scenes could have been a bit more intense but honestly Peter McKeirnon has done a fantastic job and I extend much kudos to him for what is now one of my favourite zombie stories.

What to say about this. I enjoyed it far more than I expected to. I'm a big fan of zombie genre and this was a free download. This usually goes one of two ways, rubbish or decent and this is certainly in the latter category. What I particularly enjoyed was the setting. I always prefer my tales of gore to be in the UK, but this was set in Northern England, my neck of the woods. If you're a zombie fan, give this a go, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Plenty of blood and guts with some dark humour thrown in.

Great book. It was recommended to me by my Brother, so I bought it and read it in two days.

Living in Runcorn, I can safely say the locations were pretty much spot on and it was nice to read something set here.

Likeable characters, well written action and a fairly constant undercurrent of humour kept me wanting to read just one more page and before I knew it I'd finished the whole book.

It's definitely well worth the price and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a second instalment.

Good as far as it goes, but I expected so much more than just one day in a zombie-outbreak journal. The characters are believable, arresting and funny, which in a way, makes the disappointment of leaving them so soon all the worse. Every good book should have a beginning, middle and end, but this is beginning only. If it is the author's intention to continue with the story I would rather have waited for the finished complete novel and rated it higher.

I've never read a book that made me want to laugh while I'm throwing up! Wonderful story, brilliant characters and, quite simply, tremendous gory fun.

Peter is a great storyteller and uses his grotesque and funny imagination to take you on a journey through a zombie apocalypse in a typical (?) northern town. He balances the gore and humour perfectly, plus his characters have a gritty realism, enhanced even more by the fact that this all takes place in generally prosaic surroundings.

Even if you've never lived in Runcorn (although I have), it's easy to identify with the types of settings and places in the story, and this is a testament to Peter's writing. He deserves to go a long way (and I'd love to see a film!).

Just received book 2 this week, so thoroughly looking forward to reading that too! Tell the world Peter Mckeirnon has been sent to make us laugh (... and occasionally throw up...!).

Totally didnt want it to end lol!!!

    Fab book!

Great that it was set in a town i know,.. had a laugh telling my 15yr old daughter all the landmarks of the book!,.. she was most impressed whilst I was telling her where the zombies and car crashes, etc where!

I'm not just saying it is great just because i know the 'venue',.. it's a flippin great read with loads of great likeable and some hilarious characters with absolutely realistic reactions!

Defo not yelling at the characters 'oh for flips sake its a zombie don't ya know?!!!' type story!

Hope it gets to number 1, would be well deserved.

Absolutely will be buying the next book Peter McKeirnon writes!

    Recommended!

A friend suggested I read the first in this series of books, I live in the town it's written about and know all of the landmarks mentioned , I'm sure I even know a couple if the characters! I enjoyed the read, probably more because of my connection with the location and gave me some very graphic images to carry around in my pictorial mind! It would translate very easily into an hour and a half late night zombie comedy drama !
It's a great little bit if escapism ... I will read the rest!

    Awful.
Poorly written, terrible plot, no character development, laughable structure. The only people this would appeal to are the ones who feel some elevated sense of worth because they know the author and are mentioned in the book.
The author focusses so much on mentioning specific people and specific places that he forgets that he's writing a story. Writing sentences such as 'we need to go to The Grange. The Grange is the school on Latham Avenue...etc.' is pointless. In that situation, would the character really say that? Or would he more likely say something along the lines of 'we need to go to the school'. Does stating that The Grange is on Latham Avenue really bring anything to the story other than for some mindless residents in Runcorn to feel famous because they know Latham Avenue and maybe went to The Grange?
Also, do minor characters really need full names? Or is this again just to appeal to the people described above?
I went to The Grange, I know some of the people mentioned in this story but having all that excess, pointless information just detracts from the story. Maybe it was to pad it out as there isn't enough of a plot, descriptive writing or character development to fill all the pages contained.

Poor work indeed. Please develop some depth to your writing - I'm sure you have it in you to be a better writer - this was lazy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book that could do with some proof reading
Reviewed in Germany on 18 October 2013
I am a huge fan of the Zombie genre, and even in todays saturated markets, sometimes a book comes out that stands above the crowd, and this is such a book. It probably helps if you come from the North West of England or maybe know someone from that area (especially Liverpool), but there are so many laugh-out-loud moments one should take care when reading it on a crowded subway. The only criticism I have, and which is why I am only giving it four stars is that it could, firstly, do with a good proof read to iron out the numerous spelling mistakes and secondly, ALL of the speech in the book is italised, which is completely unnecessary and detracts from the flow of reading. Iron these issues out and it would be 5 stars, no problem at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars The zombies don't have a chance in this Northern town!
Reviewed in the United States on 9 May 2016
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written, fast-paced tale of zombies overrunning a small town in Northern England. A single dad, his teenaged daughter and a cast of colorful characters battle the undead in an action-packed quest for survival and safety. The humor is wonderfully dark, blood and guts abound, and the story moves along briskly. No one does a zombie apocalypse quite like the Brits - I am really looking forward to the next installment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read!

I've gotta say there are a lot of things that can put off a reader this book contained none of that. Straight forward into the story no long boring introductions into every character. You get to know the characters in a way that is not painful and boring and the cast of characters is very varied - some one for everyone to associate with. The action is pretty much non stop from the get go and while there are side stories the side stories tie into the main story other than just happening at the same time or the same city they actually come together! In some of the books I've read the writer tries way too hard to - oh I don't know what would be the right word but I'm going to say they try to seem far more intelligent....that puts me off... not this writer his intelligence shows in the story line but he doesn't need to use useless streams of words and sentences to prove it. Very down to earth writing style that can be enjoyed by all who read it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than Expected

As I began reading this I ,use admit I didn't expect much of it. Initially the characters, plot, and conversation all came across as quite flat. Thankfully the more I read the better it got. If that pattern of growth and improvement on the author's part continues then the other books in this series could turn out to be quite good!
