Lucy King’s saga continues as she searches for her family and for the truth in Book Two of the Virulent Chronicles.
It took one week to demolish the world and obliterate the earth’s population.
And it took two weeks to solidify friendships and build-up a small society of survivors who must rely solely on each other to navigate the future’s unknown terrain.
As Grant Trotter and Lucy King make their journey to Brixton, Nebraska in search of answers, the Oregon contingent of survivors must deal with Ethan’s failing health and some resentful, mysterious newcomers. Each group faces new challenges as they adjust to their new terrifying realities.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 September 2013As an apocalyptic nut, I couldn't resist, and both books in the series so far are really impressive. Great original story line, which I would imagine is quite difficult with so much material around of similar ilk. As I have a long commute I really appreciate something to truly get lost in and relax with. Really hoping no.3 is in the pipeline soon!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 November 2013Well executed, good expansion of the plot, Great to see more about what lies behind the reason for killing off all of humanity.
As the plot unfolds we learn more about that malicious evil mind that created the concept of killing off the whole human race to create a new and better world.
I found the underground dome/shelter somewhat reminiscent of Wool by Hugh Howey, and I was slightly disppointed to find only 1 man as the creator of the godawful scheme to kill off the human race. It seemed unlike that one man would have such power. I wonder if such an idea is peculiarly american, or if such a concept could be created in Britian.
I travelled with Lucy through her ambivalence to her father, to her outright dislike and hatred, and mostly her realization that she has changed and she is no longer the young girl her mother and sibling knew, but she has changed by being in the world as it died.
I rather liked the portrayal of her father as a emotionally retarded scientist who through his experimentation upon human subjects exhibits how removed from human empathy and emotion he really is.
We see more of Lucy's brother and his support network in this book.
Very good and looking forward to the third installment.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 September 2013Well this is the second novel in the Virulent series, and the action just keeps on coming. Lucy and Grant finally get to Nebraska...and Lucy finally gets to see her family - however what they find there is not exactly what they expected - especially for Grant.
Meanwhile back in Portland, Ethan is getting worse and drastic measures need to be taken to try and save his life. This second book is wonderfully written, (as was the first), and keeps you turning the pages long after you should have gone to sleep!
I can't wait for the third instalment and would like to thank the author's students profusely for setting her a dare to write a novel they would enjoy - I have certainly thoroughly enjoyed them....well done!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 October 2013A very good second book in the series which clarifies much of what took place in the first and takes the overall story to a new level. The Characters continue to develop along with the story - the good, the bad and the ugly of a post apocalyptic world where the apocalypse was created by man 'for the greater good'.
I look forward to reading the next one in the student inspired series!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 October 2013I'm really glad that Lucy and grants journey didn't take up the whole book and I liked that we still got to know how Ethan and the others were doing. This was a more realistic portrayal of an apocalypse I've read in a while in the sense that a lot of people die and the main characters don't automatically know everything about how to survive. But then on the other hand there is still so many unanswered questions that will hopefully be answered in the next book and it doesn't get dragged out.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 January 2017To be honest, I did wonder what kind of plot a series of books could track when the last survivors are so few, but these books keep getting better - the author holds no sympathy for characters - there are those you see as heroes and villains, but the lines are blurry and they could just as easily get knocked into the next life as survive

Looking forward to the next in the series
This should be in February I believe
Great storyline keep it coming
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 November 2013Oh no it ended and there isn't a book 3 ,so unfair. I loved this story,I know it's all been done before but there were no flesh eating zombies which was good, and there were several stories going on that intertwined. I could really connect with Lucy King, the main character. There's still do much the reader needs to learn about the system I just hope there will be a book 3 soon.
I think this story would suit teens or adults I enjoy stories aimed at teen readers more than some adult ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling and Realistic!
In "The System: Virulent Book 2" the thrilling sequel to "Virulent" the reader begins to unravel the mystery behind the conception of the virus that has almost decimated the world's population as well as getting a glimpse into the malicious mind that funded it through Elektos Corporation. This story is jammed packed with twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing as to what will happen next to Lucy, Salem, Ethan and Grant.
In this story Grant and Lucy travel across country to Brixton, Nebraska where they discover an underground dome filled with people Huck Truman has chosen to exist in the Utopian world he's creating. Can the two survive the testing, physically and emotionally? Can they save Ethan and the other survivors they left behind? These questions and more are answered as their path leads them into danger and self-discovery.
In the analogous story Ethan suffering a grievous injury stays behind to recuperate with the raider Darla and her son Teddy, but their problems only increase after an emergency operation. Tensions run high as Ethan's family of survivors begins to grow, most of them paranoid about the future. What Ethan comes to realize is that they'll do anything to survive including using him as a bargaining chip.
As the tension mounts and fear escalates, the personalities of the characters become more complex; Lucy changes from a malleable daughter into one that's defiant and stubborn, seeing her parents through new eyes. With the help of a new friend she not only uncovers the reality of the System under Huck Truman's autocratic control but seeks an escape route for those unhappy with the enforced system of rule. Grant Trotter gains a new maturity as he deals with a new threat, the testing making him ill. In this story the reader begins to grasp the extent of Grant's love and undying loyalty to Lucy as he struggles to put her welfare ahead of his own. Ethan emerges as a heroic figure who fights not only a poisonous infection, but his own anxieties and loss. He struggles to bring a kind of normalcy to their lives especially Ainsley's, the insecure but responsible young woman forced into nursing a man she fears loving.
Even the minor characters hold a fascination; Lucy's mother Maxine, loving and kind, confused by her husband's actions but willing to sacrifice anything to save her family, Scott King the brilliant but weak -willed scientist easily manipulated by a dictator. Huck Truman, the charismatic founder and leader of the System who hides his evil intent behind a polite but shrewd facade. Like the main characters the reader becomes enthralled by personalities that grow more multifaceted as the plot progresses.
I enjoyed this well-written and captivating dystopian novel and can't wait to read the next book in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars good dystopian fiction
Big fan of thus genre....this series is pretty good and I would recommend it to fans with that genre in mind! A new take on end of life as we know it after a pandemic that wipes out almost all of humanity and the rest of the animals. I liked the characters, and the emotional struggles that developed. This wasn't the same old plot, either. Interesting take on what could happen as a result of near extinction of the human race. Hope to see more from thus author.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Story Keeps Moving, Interest Mounting!
After book 1, I was not sure how the momentum would keep going. The initial story was so intense, then there was this handful of people, and a trip planned, but how was the story going to move? The author was brilliant, and there was no need to turn to zombies (thank you!). The trip was tasteful and did not drive the whole story. The initial story in book 1, focused on a single point of view for an exciting thrill ride of anticipation. In this book, the point of views were able to be split up and created new thrills as it dropped characters in anticipatory holds to go back and check up on other characters who had been left in similar holds. Tension was high, there was plenty of gives and takes as the book ended on both good and bad news. Weighing in more on the "good" side in the final chapters, I am ready to see what is in store for 3 as there is always a calm before the storm.
Just a high note in general...The editing in these books so far is professional!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I love the Virulent series. I bought the first book on a lark and devoured it in less than a day. To my utter dismay, the second one wasn't out yet. I found Shelbi on Facebook and to my relief, the second one was coming soon. Now I'm dying for the third!
In the second installment, Lucy and Grant have lost just about everyone that they love. Lucy's brother isn't doing well and Lucy and Grant are on the way to Nebraska in search of Lucy's father. When they finally make it, Lucy and Grant are separated in a dire situation, as the Nebraska survivors will not accept Grant. The second book follows them on this journey of discovery and the sacrifices it takes to reunite.
This book was just as good, if not better, than the first book. The characters are so lovable and intense. It is like they are real people that could walk off the pages into your living room and you would instantly connect with them. I think Shelbi did a fantastic job with the end-of-the-world scenario, hitting the feelings and emotions just right. If you haven't read the first book, it is a must read and you better have you one-click finger ready to buy the second as soon as you close the last page!

4.0 out of 5 stars Moving right along
After we get a glimpse at how the King family came to be in the predicaments they're in, the action continues. No character is left behind and the things that drive them are easy to understand.
This is a great successor to the first book and perfectly sets up the next.
